View Full Version : Why do spammers ...

... think I am single and in need of a date? I am happily married, and have been for many years!

It used to be all ads for "e.d." drugs, which also bemused me, as I am female, and don't have that body part. But the tide has definitely shifted to dating ads - how about for you?

I've noticed that change here too. I've also seen an increase in the loan and credit card ads too. And of course - the low-life Nigerian money scams will never end.

Oh, and why do they think I have diabetes? Don't need to "cure" a condition I don't have, thanks, no matter how "easy" the trick!

I use Yahoo for email, so 99% oif spam is caught in got into a separate 'spam' folder. I check quickly and then delete.

One day about 2 months back I opened on. Scrolled down to the bottom and . . . I was able to UNSUBSCRIBE! Took a look at some others, ditto. Within 3 days my spam mail was down to viagra stuff (no unsubscribe on those).

Trust me, Sandie, 99% of my spam gets filtered as well. It's just that sometimes they come up with new schemes that it takes a while for the filters to catch on to.

As my email addresses have been online for so many years, I am on every spambot's list, I am sure. The other one I have been getting a ton of lately is "You could be on Deal or No Deal with Howie Mandell" - rearrange that headline however you want, I have gotten it. I never watch the show, maybe saw a few seconds of it once, and now every day I get a few of those! Why that one game show out of the myriad list of 'em, I have no idea, but it's the new "in" thing with spammers, I have found!

When you "unsubscribe," you are actually confirming to someone, somewhere that your email address works. So you'll get on more lists. I never "unsubscribe" from anything I didn't subscribe to in the first place. And for most "subscribe" things, I use a different email address as well!

I don't know about that... like Freedom, I went through a lot of mine one day and "unsubscribed" from many, and my spam emails decreased exponentially. I've heard that before (that it's just confirming your email address), but what have you got to lose? You're already getting spammed by them lol

I was so upset last week because somehow a spammer signed me up for Match.com!!! It turned out to actually NOT be from Match...... I know that you should never follow a link from inside an email, so I tried to access the match.com account from match's homepage. They had no info on me, so I'm sure it was spam and they used match.com's name hoping I'd click their link inside the email.

I ma very happily married. I met my husband online. He was sitting next to me when I opened my email to see the "Welcome to Match.com!" email. Thank goodness my husband is well aware I have no interest in dating anyone else. It would have caused some major problems for another couple with trust issues.

I hate computers to start with and very much resent all this techno-crap being shoved down our throats. The ONLY place I ever access is Pet Talk, it's the ONLY place I feel safe. I do get these spam things quite often including something involving UPS. Since I never buy anything or get involved with anything involving personal information I can't figure out how we get this nonsense. Whenever this stuff shows up I hit unsubscribe, it might take a while but eventually these "intruders" get the message. It would be great if we could have unlisted e-mail addresses like we can have unlisted phone numbers.

As stated above, all you're really accomplishing by clicking "unsubscribe" is confirming that your email address is valid.

If it's not from a known sender, just delete it.

I don't bother with "unsubscribe" either. I think they just sell those lists to other spammers too. Google catches just about all of the junk and sends it to the spam folder, so it's never in my inbox anyway, and I can delete the whole spam folder at once with just one click without even having to read the junk. I just scan thru the subjects to make sure no legit mail got sent there by mistake before I do.

Luckily I do not get spam much at all anymore. But for a while I was getting emails (at work ) from supposedly young ladies who are lonely and want me to look at naked pictures of them. And I got the UPS ones for a while too. I never order anything to be coming to me UPS so I knew that was a scam. And of course I got the Viagra ads too.
I still get junk at work, but it's more work realted junk mail (if that makes sense).
I don't waste time unsubscribing, I just delete without opening.

Aside from the..ahem...enhancement spam I've been getting heaps from "Youtube" and "Amazon". I did inform Amazon and this phishing is well-known. I didn't bother with Youtube since I don't have an account so know those are bogus. I'm getting loads of what I call "1-800-baddrug" spam, too.

I get the ED ones and also the hot women looking for love, the order medicine online and all the rest.. When I was working I would get home after being gone 28 days and have thousands of them!

Oh, and I get a ton of spam claiming to be from PayPal. It always pays to check the headers.

And don;t spammers know I'm not gonna fall for anything if they misspell words in the subject line?

I get the PayPal ones too - and I just forward them to [email protected], as PP requests.

I also get a lot from Bank of America and Wells Fargo saying my account is limited/frozen until I go to the provided link and update my info. That's strange - I've NEVER had an account with either. I don't get the UPS ones, but I'm forever getting ones from Western Union - "Dear Account Holder" - blah-blah-blah - update your account. Never used them either....................

And mis-spell in the subject line - yeah - dead give-away. Almost as bad as being addressed to "Undisclosed Recipients".

I learned the names of many banks from spammers - I thought "First Third Bank" had to be made up until I got a bunch of spam listing it - and then found out it was real. The dead giveaway for me is when pet, Karen, and help all get the same email - and I never give any of those email addresses to banks!

I get popup offers all the time from Match.com.. men, women, choose your 10-year age range, different neighborhoods mostly around metro-Detroit, but I have gotten offers from Cleveland, too..

So many choices, how can I ever decide?! :p

I forgot to mention all the spammers who send me "invoices" for things I never purchased - on iTunes, or eBay or anywhere else. Sometimes I have to drill down pretty far to see where the email originate from!

Top this one if you can. :D

Today I got an email from Christy Walton - yes - of the Walmart empire. She's dying and has only 2 months to live, and she has $55 BILLION - 9 of which she wants to give to me to help some charities. When this money hit my bank account I'll let you all know, and if anyone needs some financial help - then just ask me for it. The sky's the limit! I guess this means I can tell that rude customer service person I encountered in Walmart a few days ago, to take a flying leap. Heck - I can buy the whole store outright and fire every last person there if I want to. :D

Oh, another new popular trend is "Time and Attendance Software/Solution/Track your hours" - is this such a common problem/ issue that spammers think they can profit from it?

Just got and "junked" one that me smile nonetheless. The title? "Learn Good" and subject "Online language learning," which of course my editor/daughter of an English teacher's brain immediately said "That should be 'Learn Well!" or "Learn Easily," or something else! "Learn Good" sounds uneducated, you're not gonna be trusted to teach anyone language!

Reviving this just to say,

If Tara the Psychic really was a psychic, she'd know I will delete the email unread, even if it says she has a reading for me!

And I still, I repeat still have no Exes who are searching for me, as I have no Exes!

Recently spammers have been sending a "how to grow hair" email - I mean, really? Have they taken a look at my mop? I hardly need to grow MORE of it!

I get so many spam emails from Match.com and Christian Mingle that I will never ever use them, even if I was single.

Why do spammers now assume I'd want a Chinese bride, when I never have responded to any of the offers of Russian Brides or other Asian brides over the years? I wonder if my Russian-American niece-in-law gets those, too!

And why have they all of a sudden decided saffron, of all things, is the next diet miracle? It happens to be the given name of my new music director's little daughter, who is 2 1/2 years old and bright as can be, and I just don't associate her with weight loss!

Okay, why oh why do spammer assume I'd be interested in Match.com - or other dating sites? Been happily married for many years now, not interested, and don't foresee ever being so! This seems to have replaced the v!agr@ spams ... Although I am now getting "mash patch" injury spams, when I'd never even heard of whatever it is!

It is annoying that spammers assume I am diabetic (never have been), single (not for 27 years) and telemarketers have been leaving messages saying "If anyone in your household is over 60 ... which we are not ... maybe some of our furniture is, but ...

Note to spammers, as of 2014 - I still am married to the love of my life. Sending me spam for BlackPeopleMeet, Jewish Singles, Seniors Date and any other specific ethnic religious, or socio-economic group to which I do not belong will not help you in getting me to respond!

And, by the way, telling me I need to buy flowers for my wife/girlfriend for Valentine's Day doesn't work either! I am married, and to a male. He is still enjoying the little live tree I got him at Christmas, thank you!
