Something got me started on American Bobtails and did not see the color Orange anywhere (which is Bob's color, an Orange Tabby), but did see Red. I used to call them Red in my younger days, but not being sure I ended up on a Cat Color Investigation or Safari through various web sites.

Oddly enough, CFA had info that is breed specific but not about cats in general.

Well, Red is a denser Orange but according to one site the genetics is labeled as Red.

White spotting (Piebald or Pied) is an incomplete dominant. The white color is dominant. So Mr. Spunky is a "Brown Tabby and White". He is actually a Mackerel tabby with some ticking and the white spotting overrides or masks the fur color in places.

Calicos are "Tortoiseshell and White". Calico is the American name for this breed. So Emily has this pattern. Tortoiseshell is a Red and Black combination.

The dilute form is called a Blue-Cream and the Calico would be a Blue-Cream and White. This is Callie.

Blue is a dilute black. This is Jane. She has no white spotting.

Bob is a Red Tabby Bobtail. Sam is a Red and White Tabby.

Names are given to the various white spotting marks, such as tuxedo, etc.

There is also a white coat color, Albino White, complete white spotting, and dominant white. Deafness is not associated with the albino. Complete white spotting (rare) is indistinguishable visually from a true white coat.

Please feel free to add your thoughts, observations, or knowledge to my edifying excursion.

Cool, I saw this link but didn't open it. I think it simplifies and clarifies the other pages I read.

Thanks
