State lifts rule that made cheese vendors blue
At last, some gouda news: The state will let vendors at public events slice cheese for customers.
Last summer, a state Department of Agriculture crackdown on farmers markets struck a sour curd with both cheesemakers and headline punsters. Officials sought to invoke a moldy, 40-year-old law that prohibited cheese vendors, in public, from carving up bricks and wheels without a license. They faced munsterous fines of up to $600.
This week, the state found a whey to become more lactose-tolerant, announcing that it will temporarily exempt cheesemakers from the rule and take public comments on a permanent change through Dec. 18.
The news prompted an area politician to go out on a limburger.
“The state decided to show some sense here and step out of the way to let people make a living, ” Assemblyman Will Barclay, R-Pulaski, told the North County website, Newzjunky. “"I'm sure they're happy to hear they are free to cut the cheese."
