I agree! However, I'm not a huge fan of Windows at all anymore.

I've gotten the Blue screen of death on windows before, so yes, that's how I see all of them :p.

Wait until you all see Windows 8. It is VERY, VERY early beta that I have access to due to being a Microsoft partner.

All I can say is its gonna change some things. Imagine your profile going from you phone, to your Xbox, to your PC and then back to your phone. Same data, same look, same apps... It is going to revolutionize the workplace because your workplace can literally be anywhere you want it to be.

iCloud is going to look like a tinker toy by comparison. (I use iCloud and I like it, BTW.)

To hell with that. I live out in the boonies for a reason. I do NOT want that kind of "accessibility" and find it incredibly narcissistic for people to think they're that bloody important that they need to bring work home with them on their phone.

It just ain't that damned important.

Work is work, home is home, and the two don't mix.

I want my phone to be a phone, I want my computter to be a computter.

For those of us who dont have a union to secure us.... We work 70 hours a week, for reason.

Better yet, my wife and my family understand how and why I work. I NEED to be connected, 24x7. 14 people and their families depend on me. Its the cross I bear to be FREE dude. No union. No master. ME.

The 2 DO mix. They do. You just have to learn how to make it work. We have.

Fire away.... But your attitude shows why unions are bad for the economy.

The Developer Pre Release, or something closer to Alpha? I thought the beta wasnt due till CES 2012. The pre release is still pretty clunky but I see the potential for Winslow users and businesses, everything with one OS. If they pull it off it will be a huge WIN.

ETA: Just reread the Developers Release, its a late Alpha build.

Sorry, no one needs to be connected and available 24/7/365.

I didn't take my work home prior to being employed by the Post Office, and I refuse to take work home now.

I find being connected to a wire 24/7 a truly bizarre definition of freedom.

Do I need to be connected 24/7/365? Yes. I'm a freelance photographer and artist. But my main reason? I'm deaf. How else am I going to be able to communicate with people? I don't talk on the phone. It's unbelievably tough for me to do that. It is a whole bunch of gibberish when I try. I'm thankful for email, cell phones (texting plan, of course), and computers. I don't know what I would do if I had no access to any of it. Technology is incredible that way.

Has the Post Office endorsed #OWS?

Given that:

1) The IS an International Postal Union, which goes by that name (but isn't probably what you think it is)

2) There are at least 6 Unions/associations which represent Postal employees (not counting teamsters contract carriers, etc)

3) Each Union is made up of Locals, each with their own executive boards, and each executive board has their own voice

The terminology does matter.

Perhaps that is on purpose. I have found many union members are purposely obtuse.

The Union didn't teach me the skills to get the job, didn't take the test for me, didn't go to interviews for me.

You purposely are failing to understand. I'm not being obtuse at all, I'm being clear as crystal.

I'm not beholden to them for anything. It so happened that a job I wanted was a Union represented job in a business which I have found much to my displeasure desperately needs a Union or Unions (look up the great postal strike and the reasons for it........).

There is work outside the postal service, there is life outside the postal service. It is a means to an end, not the end itself.

You are a Union Member. I am not a Union Member. The Union makes your decisions for you. I make my own decisions.

If the Union decides you need to be in contact 24/7/365, you will have no choice. But wait, you are a Union Officer, you make the rules then? I can understand your position now. The Union Rules dont apply to you because you make the rules as an Officer?

To make it simple.

Union Mindset: group think.

Individual Mindset: self think.

The above is my opinion, and you continue to prove it to me as proof.

I do not get, and probably never will, the union mindset. I dont need some dic in a suit to negotiate my pay and benifits. I can do that on my own.

Its just the nature of the beast in IT. Many of our clients are 24x7 operations. E-Commerce server dies at 3am, costing them $3,000/hour its down... You bet im taking that call. Could I be a 'better' IT provider and get them into a 99.999% up time environment? Sure. But, because I really understand small business I just know better than to even offer it to certain clients, because some of that technology is REALLY expensive.

Anyway....

Sure, to many of you that does not seem like freedom. To me, it is. I am my own boss and get to enjoy a great life. Even better, I get to help share that success with 13 other great people!

The End. :)

I am on call 24/7, if I didn't respond bad things could happen, I am not self important it is a fact of the nature of the IT work that I do.

Its not bad planning or bad training or whatever, stuff happens. If you haven't done someone's job you shouldn't judge.

This is true. Computer problems don't stop at 5 pm. Bad weather can hit any time and can be catastrophic for servers and the like lol. especially when you get an unexpected 8-10 inches of snow before halloween LOL.

As anyone who has ever used a computer can attest to.... computers go down at the most inopportune times lol

I am sure there could be a company that has a business model that puts the entire fate of the organization on one person's 24/7/52 availability.

But other than a sole proprietor, I cannot imagine why.

And it certainly would not be a company I would want my family dependent upon!

There are no "communists" here on Pet Talk, despite what you might think. Just because someone's politics are to the "left' of yours does not make them a communist, ya know.

It must be tough, eh Sara? Looking down from thy roost upon we little people? How stupid we are that we cannot see your genius?

Yes. Yes we as a company realize that my singular knowledge of the detailed physical configuration of our colocation facility is an issue we need to address. Its a project on my plate. But rest your little heart... We will be fine. Thank you for your concern.

Also, dont worry dear.... I doubt I would be trying to employ you in the future. So you don't have to worry about putting your family at risk in our silly little company.

Oh... I recall you lamenting about how difficult it was to give away your extra wealth. I'm sure you recall? You have your wonderful home, cars, a Harely...etc... I used this new fangled thingy called Google. I typed in "How do I give a gift to the US Treasury?" Wouldn't you know it? The VERY first link that came up was...

Blue, you are wrong. Just want to correct one point that you have repeated. LH is NOT a Luddite. Has not been since childhood, is not now, was not raised to be, and never will be. Got that? I have been his sister his whole life, you can trust me on that one.

Im quite sure he could school me with ease on a large amount of technology. I really do mean that.

99% uptime does not happen without 24/7 support.

If Puck is selling 99% uptime he had better be on call 24/7, and that would be a company I would depend on if he can deliver.

Last employer also sold 99% uptime, the owner and half the techs where on call 24/7. My current employer sells 99% uptime and 24/7 support.

A 10,000 ft comment on this general idea....

To put it in simple terms... 99.999% uptime (5 MINUTES of down time a year) can be done. It can. But it is REALLY expensive. Think about what you are asking for there? Its not just a fault tolerant server you are asking for. Its a fault tolerant switch, power supply, internet connectivity (on the same DNS name) etc... It can be done. Its just not for most clients.

IT is WAY more complex than the average end user understands. Its not 'magic' that makes Pet Talk appear on your screen or your email show up in your inbox...

You may not need to bring work home but those who own their own business may. If you are a self-proprietor who really cares about their business, this type of thing will come in handy. If you have a 9 - 5 job, no, you wouldn't need it.

Union Free America

Union Corruption

The sad fact is that many unions are infiltrated by organized crime. Not all unions or union officials are corrupt. In fact, the vast majority of union officials, especially at the local level, are probably decent law abiding people.

But unionism is about power and "power corrupts" so there are plenty of examples of union corruption. Keeping your fellow workers aware of them is a good way to influence them against getting involved with a union.

The National Legal and Policy Center does an excellent job of monitoring and reporting on union corruption. They publish a twice-monthly "Union Corruption Update" that is absolutely loaded with examples of union corruption in almost every union. The archive of the "Union Corruption Update" is available online and you can search it by union or state.

This page takes a little navigating. Click on "Organized Labor Accountability Project" and then on "Union Corruption Update" to find the information.

If union corruption is of interest to you, send NLPC an e-mail asking them to send you "Union Corruption Update" on a regular basis.

LH, I may be down on unions but my comments earlier in this thread are no where on the level of Wom's.

I will say this. The union member mentality of, I wouldnt be where I am today without my union. Vs the entrepreneur mentality of, I wouldnt be where I am today without my own ambition. The entrepreneurs mentality is simply more in line with my own.

My opinion of the local union leaders is pretty dang close to Wom's however. Ive also met union members making top wages getting the peach jobs because of how long they have been paying dues, and not for how well they do their job. The union rules are also very foreign to me, why send 3 people, 3 separate times to do a job 1 man in 1 trip could do?

The Mac users on this forum, you are the minority, IME, of Mac owners/users in general.

Of course

The other 2 men to intimidate the client in case he doesn't like the quality of the job.

As a non union electrician, and now a paid to do whatever I do with computers/networks. What Wom said makes no sense.

Like I said this Union Speak/mentality makes no sense to me.

The Mac Cult of Personality makes even less sense to me. The Mac fanboy notion that by owning a Mac makes one smarter, actually increases my IQ two fold over them.

What Wom said makes no sense.

Actually it makes a lot of sense.
Unions have a long history of corruption, fraud, bullying, intimidation and holding hands with the communist party.
And none of that is connected to workers rights, it's all about their own pocket, political persuasion and power struggle....period.
Want proof ??? Google it.
I've seen too many good men with families end up with nothing because of them.
No one owes you a living....no one.

There's no truth in what you're spreading. THere's corruption in every human endeavor, Unions ar eno different, because people run Unions.

However, the line of BS you're spewing, that all Unions, Union members and Officers are part and parcel of corrupt practices is about as true as your statements about your insurance fraud not affecting anyone in the states.
