Just listed for auction at Sotherby's, an Aussie artist by the name of Arthur Boyd painted it in 1958.
The estimate ??? $1 Million - $1.2 million.
???????? Are they kidding ?? Who would spend such money on that ??
The title of the painting is "The Frightened Bridegroom".

I Googled this because I couldn't view the pic you posted. Some things are blocked here on my office computer. I found Frightened Bridegroom II. Looks like Grover from Sesame Street wearing a mask. :D

I would love to know his thought process on these paintings. Check out "Death of a Husband" and others on this page:

Gawd only knows what was going thru his head. He's pretty famous here, but somehow I don't see why.
Did you see some of the prices people pay......crazeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Some of the works remind me of Marc Chagall. There are a few landscape works there that I really like.

This quote from the Wikipedia page may explain some of the odd figures:

His best-known work is perhaps his Half Caste Bride series in the 1950s, based on his contact with Aboriginal culture in Alice Springs in 1951.

More works - note the two very realistic ones on the second page:

I wonder how much it would be worth if someone scraped his signature off ??
Probably pick it up then for $5 at a flea market. :D

Someone told me once, that you had so much money Helene, that you knew exactly how many $100 notes fitted into a tea chest. And furthermore, those $100 notes were stacked on edge.
So with all of your unspent billions, why wouldn't you buy it ????

Hey, it's not that Picasso couldn't paint, if you see his work from his early years, when he was still in school, he could do realistic work very well. Art is about choosing what to paint, and how to do it. Picasso's work became more about expressing things than interpreting reality literally.

then why are this guy's works "freaky" and Picasso's cubist paintings actually worth a million? ;)

It is all a matter of taste. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, after all. Some people may like this guys work because it is something to talk about, or make them think, or amuses them, others may find it nightmarish. The artists doesn't determine the prices for the most part, the market does!
