You're so right, Bastet's mum, I missed them too. Look at my Filou at August 8th. There are more Aby fans here: Look at Neko1's Tama (e.g. under Kitties and Warm Places) and sasvermonts Miley and Graemer. Miley looks like Filou's sister.
But Bastet is maybe the most special of all. Do you have new pix? She must have grown now.

Yes I do! But being new here I am still learning how to post so bear with me! I have a wonderful one of her with her chest puffed out and smiling because it was her birthday (May 6th) and she got mousies!

What can I say. I am in love with my cats - especially my two Abys. There is something so very endearing about the breed. I am sure everyone feels the same way about their cat(s). Having had all different types/breeds, I still prefer the Aby.

I am hooked!:D

I still haven't figured out how to post pictures without the attachments....one day !!! Here's to abys. I have been fortunate to have enjoyed the companionship of 4 Abys in my life. They have unique and wonderful personalities and their intelligence makes life with them very interesting. My present 2, Maya and Bodhi , are now 10 months old and there is never a dull moment or quiet one for that matter. Like SAS I love all cats but have a soft spot for Abys.

Ah, boy can I remember what 10 months was like. It is better now, but not much better. They are still very, very active and into everything. They add insult to injury every chance they get. I do love them so.....

SASVermont- are they both boys? I think Graemer looks bigger..is it just the photo? They seem like little silk worms to me (that is a compliment...though worms isn't very pleasing, is it?). I think they seem so 'wrappable' like a stole, maybe...

sasvermont
11-07-2002, 05:44 PM
Cataholic, the two of mine are one of each. The smaller is the female, Miley.

Yes, they are very, very silky to the touch. They have very lean bodies and are constantly wrapping themselves around my legs and head at night. They are love bugs for sure. I often tell them "you are so silllllkkkkyyyy"...... they don't shed much either. I seldom brush them, but do pet them lots.

The only drag to these two is that they have this ever present need to "get as high" as possible. They reside on tops of doors, cabinets, chests of drawers, headboards, so there is no place really sacred. I cannot seem to stop them. One time Graemer, the male, actually got into a drop ceiling and walked around, finally dropping THROUGH one of the tiles.

I do love the breed though. I am hoping that when they mature a bit more, they will settle down. My last Aby became very calm at about age 5

SAS- verrrrrry interesting. I could see saying to them the same thing. They do look so silky and slinky and slippery. I wonder why they go after the height so much? Did you notice this, or have you been informed this is a characteristic of the breed? I think it is very interesting. I have those shutters, too, and mine used to do the same thing. But, my cats are a little, uh, 'heftier' than yours. Ok, let's be honest- two of mine are plain old big boys.

My brother likes Abbys. I will encourage him to pick up a pair...right after he divorces his wife, who hates all non-two legged creatures. :D

Oh Lailamara, what cuties you have! A pity we can't meet. Cataholic: Yes they are silky and slim -and they always want to be on top of it all. Filou is the same. When he says hello, he jumps on people's shoulders. When he is on my shoulder and my husband comes he jumps on his, because he is taller than me and if there is a cupboard he will jump to the cupboard......
There is no cat that you see so often on shoulders like the Abys.
Sas: Filou will be 7 next February (4th of February to be precise) and I do not see that he calms down. Of course it's not the same as he has been with 10 months but he can still run through the house like a dust devil. If you throw mousies or furballs for him he will run after it and jump on it with all 4 paws getting really mad.
Oh I love him so.
(His brofur Tigris is half Abyssinian and has the proportions and face of an Aby but the size of a small Maine Coon (his mother was Siberian) -he does not jump on shoulders which is fine because he has 13 lb and if he plays he tries much more to hunt and kill -it's a pity he only can catch flies)

lailamara, what a great picture. Now that you know how to post them, I hope we will see many, many more. I should carry my camera with me all the time. I could probably take better and more pictures of things they have broken to bits rather than pictures of the cats. I am constantly finding things moved, removed, broken, attacked, distmantled or in general ruined.

Last night I was awakened by a cat playing in bed with several toys. In MY bed - at 3 AM. It was not a live toy - which is a big fear of mine, that one day they will find a mouse and bring it to bed.

Off to work. I am late. I could go on and on.

My friend's Aby Xeline brings moss from the roof (they have a roof garden where the cats can go out). So she finds herself in the morning in a moss bed.
Filou likes live toys in the night: us;)

It is right here, above where the cat is, that Graemer found out how to push the tile up and walk throughout the ceiling, then finally fell through. I had to reinforce the tiles from above, with plywood so they cannot push it up and get in anymore. They still try. I say they, because now Miley hangs out on door tops as well. For quite some time it was just Graemer.

Filou sits in the sink or the bath tub and asks me to turn the faucet on -but he would never accept wet feet as Miley does -incredible. But it's really funny how similar they are. I also have picture of young Filou and young Tigris on top of one door, (unfortunately I have no scanner) -sometimes here I feel I have to buy a scanner but I am still pushing my husband to a digital camera. SAS you have good reason to worry about live (or once live prey) in your bed or elsewhere. I once had a big beautiful tabby boy who put a dead pigeon on the pillow next to me while I was sleeping. I was groping around in the dark to turn on the light and put my hand on the dead bird. The blood curding yell was heard by all my neighbours. After disposing of the bird and locking the cat out of the bedroom for the night next morning I opened the door and stepped on another dead pigeon that he left outside just outside the door.

I also had another very intelligent black female cat who put a dead mouse in my shoe after she tried to get my attention to show me her hunting skills and I just ignored her chirupps. In the early morning I slipped my shoes on and felt something in my shoe....
yup the dead mouse. I threw those shoes out immediatley.

So all in all the Abys have been pretty good . They only bring toy mice and garbage to the bed. ;)

wayne0214
11-10-2002, 08:15 AM
The problem with loooking at all these Abys, is that it makes me want one (or two) along with my other furkids. If I didn't have so many kids to care for, both inside and outside, I would definitely get a pair of Abys.

Wayne, I just don't think these cats will do really nicely in a big group. They often need SO much attention, that I think they do better in an exclusive environment. They do share, but they are also very, very demanding. That is not to say that some thrive or don't thrive in groups....it is an observation on my behalf. They tend to PUNISH you if you don't spend time with them...one on one...

Maybe some of the other Abys owners will chime in on this one...

:)

Filou does not like too many people or animals around. He retires then and does not come outside as long as the people have not left (some of our friends are sad about that because they would love to pet him). His mother and dad however lived in a multi-cat household with 5 cats and some rabbits and adjusted well. His dad was the only not-spayed tom there -this must have been a reason why. And it was a really big former farmhouse. Another of the cats there was a Bengal who used to play ball with little Filou.
Filou however is polite: he says hello to everybody and gives a nosekissie to everyone who comes (even to my mom's dachshund Amber -but then he goes upstairs). I think I agree with Sallyanne.

Barbara
11-10-2002, 09:16 AM
BTW: Filou is a French name and means something like "charming rascal". His official name is Solo (because he was a single kitten) but I think my idea was better.:D

lailamara
11-10-2002, 09:19 AM
Wayne I'm not so sure Abys would like to be in a group of cats. Males may be more willing to share. Females on the other hand are not so accepting in my experience. They are very territorial . My breeder doesn't recommend 2 females in one house. Male and female seems to work best. Maya is the boss here and Bodhi accepts this with little protest. I think she sees herself as my boss too. Her displeasure with my being away from home too long is to pee on something of mine or a place like the bed or sofa where I spend lots of time. I'm home by 7 o'clock now, no more late hours and no more peeing , so far. Bodhi is such a mellow guy nothing seems to bother him. I sometimes wonder if he even knows when we go out. He is fixated on or rather in the kitchen sink.

My cats are extremely socialble and will greet anyone and sit on their laps. My aby is attached to me and I tend to give him more attention than the others simply because he's in my face 24-7. I think he would probably like it better if he were the only cat but since he was the 4th everyone's here to stay. He can get really spiteful though, if you are not paying enough attention to him he will defecate in the litter box room in the middle of the floor. It's a small price to pay for his unconditional love! When the time comes that I have no more cats, I would definately get another aby (and a somali too!!)

Bastet comes from a multi-cat household but prefers human company to that of another cat - so I have just kept her instead of taking her fur brother with me when I left a multi cat household - Prattly - another aby - attached himself to my (now ex) partner of mine so I didn't want him fretting for him. I thought it was best for both of them to have company. Bastet only used to sleep beside prattly but shied away from any other contact with him. Aby's in a multicat household are great! provided they have someone to attach themselves to. However, it also depends on their personalities as well. Each aby as his/her own personality so it is strongly dependent on that.

Thankyou so much for the Mango website! What a gorgeous aby! I know how that owner feels! :D

I want to first of all thank Barbara for inviting me to this wonderful group. I think Aby's are the best!!!! My first Aby was a Ruddy and her name was Irksome Royal Abagail. Abby was the Cat of the Day in Feb. 2001, shortly after she had passed, so I felt it was wonderful tribute to her.Abby's Glory (http://catoftheday.com/archive/2001/February/04.html) I decided after that I did not want any more pets because it hurt so bad when I lost abby. However, as fate would have it, I was at work working on a client's website, and I found a link to a breeder in our area. So on a whim, I emailed him asking him if he had any Aby's for sale as a pet. He did have one and he sent me her picture. She was beautiful and I fell in love instantly, but this is not the end of the story. As I found out how old this Aby baby was, I discovered from her breeder that she was born on the same day that my beloved Abagail. I felt it was fate. I had to have her. So after scrimping and saving, my husband bought her for me for Christmas. Babblin Revenge is my precious baby and is so much like her big sister, that it is like Miss Abby is looking over me in her very special way. She is spoilt and is just like our child. I love being owned by an Aby and god bless all of us who own Aby's. Aby owners are a special breed because you never do know what you baby will do.:D

Wow Babs, what a chic sweater you have.

We have been talking a lot these days about how horrible it is to loose a companion because in the last weeks some special kitties passed away.
We feel very close here to the kitties that are around often and this week, Gabe, brother of Miley and Graemer, went to the rainbow bridge. We still are very sad. So we understand how you felt after Abby's death.
Edwina's Secretary and Mom had a wonderful phrase for that saying: "It's better to have loved and lost love than not to have loved."

So we hope to see you here more often. If you look at the many Valentine's card and kitty Valentine couples at Cat General you will also see the crazier part of us:D

In the morning when I'm getting ready for work, this is what I see when I get out of the shower. He has the better idea!

The few times I have been to the breeder, it has been simply heaven. I am not sure I could stand a steady diet of Abys fighting and destroying things. The breeder I use usually has one resident male stud and three females. Most times there is at least one litter wandering around. Sometimes two litters. Since Abys don't have large litters, you can expect two or three kittens each time! Sometimes the breeder keeps the females in different parts of their house, so they don't get in to fights. Three Abys is a bit much for me sometimes, other times, they are all off on their own and I don't even see them!

I am downloading a few photos right now and if I can get that accomplished, I will post the latest photo of JuniRose, the wanna be rabbit.

Is it Mango or Peaches who shows us how to spend a working day in dignity?

And Sallyanne: I couldn't breed Abys maybe (and at the end of the day I don't wanna be a breeder;) ) but I could spend my life with your three.:D

Peaches is a tiny little cat weighing in at almost 6 pounds / 2.68 kg. A new vet recently thought she was a kitten although she's two years old! She sleeps the day away in a little cat bed in the window. Bubbles, the grey & white Tabby, sleeps in a cat bed on the couch. Mango, however, loves his flannel sheet on the bed. No spoiled cats here!

Filou being a boy is heavier. He is 3,2 kilo. Sallyanne's are like Peaches- the sweetest little girls.

Filou is small! Mango is 8.5 lbs / 3.9 kg. Our Squid (who passed away in 2001) was 11 lbs / 5 kg most of his life. I know another 9 year old male Ruddy who weighs in at 14lbs / 6.3 kg but he's really active and plays a lot. He's just a big cat.

Peaches behaves more like a male Aby. Most females I have met are affectionate but not necessarity gregarious like the males. Squid used to "work the crowd" when guests were over making sure everyone petted him and paid attention to him... and maybe slipped him a snack. He created quite an awareness of the Abyssinian behavior among our friends.

Peaches competes with Mango for attention and she will single out someone new to her to become best friends with. It's fun to watch people not familiar with Abys deal with being swarmed by them. Fortunately no one is ever upset with the closeness and are forewarned about the cats. Mango even jumped on the shoulders of a plumber a few seconds after he walked in the door and started grooming him. The plumber was entertained by the attention.

I guess Tama is small too, because he's only about 6.5 pounds.:)

We have seen that around here too:D

Filou always says hello to everyone coming in- even to a dog. If it's a lady and she wears lipstick, he has to sniff the lipstick very close- but he doesn't lick:D

After his first meet and greet he usually leaves people alone.

When I was at Sallyanne's place, her three girls were over us all the time. Two of them (Juni Rose and Chloe) even slept with us in different layers of the bedding.

Filou only sleeps with us- never with guests.

I think I have never seen a 13 lb Aby. My Tigris (Aby x Siberian) is like that and he has double the frame of Filou. But he is all muscles- the vet is happy with him and doesn't think he's overweight.

Mango's breeder seems to manage living with about a dozen Abys of all ages quite well. Their "problem" is that they end up keeping a kitten from a litter every few years - simply because they become attached to the cat and can't let go. It was fun seeing all those Ruddys and Blues... and one Oriental... running around the house playing or snoozing in the sun or watching the birds in the backyard. Oriental cats seem to mix well with Abys but they are so much more vocal.

Here's another beautiful Abyssinian, named Cleo. We saw him at our house and took him inside until his owner came to get him and bring him home.
