The wonderful Humane Society of Huron Valley, the rescue and shelter for all of Washtenaw County (this one), is in a contest to win a badly-needed new van in Toyota's "100 Cars for Good" contest. Here's what it says on their website (at http://hshv.convio.net/site/MessageViewer?em_id=3321.0&printer_friendly=1):

Help HSHV Win a New Van on August 6th

We're competing in Toyota's 100 Cars for Good contest. Toyota is giving away 100 cars in 100 days to nonprofits that could use a new set of wheels. Our video will be up against four other (non-local) charities on August 6th and the video with the most votes wins the vehicle. If we win, our Cruelty and Rescue department will get a brand new van, which is badly needed.

You can learn more about the contest (and vote on August 6th) at http://www.facebook.com/toyota. Sign up for a reminder to vote at http://hshv.convio.net/toyota.

------------------------------

Please do take a look at the video and vote for them on August 6! And this week Gretchen has posted another story, in Cat General, about a wonderful rescue there: http://petoftheday.com/talk/showthread.php?t=168742

You have to be on Facebook in order to vote. I'm not, and as I e-mailed the HSHV, while I would do almost anything to help you win that truck, I will NOT join Facebook! So they suggested I ask people I know who do use it to vote for them.. And of course I thought of all you Pet Talkers right away.

I volunteer at the HSHV, and I just LOVE the place. While they are the official county shelter and must take in every animal that is brought there, they have got a fantastic adoption program and rarely if ever have to euthanize healthy animals! They'll do things like set up cages in the hallways if they get really full. They really go the extra mile, as these videos show so well.

Thank you for taking a look and hopefully helping them win this van! God bless.

So, you're not voting? You can always delete your account. Looks like a great cause, I hope they get their van!

I have the 6th marked on my calendar. I am on Facebook and get daily tidbits from HSHV. That's where I heard about Barley.

I already blow away enough time on line, and all I need is something like Facebook for a real time sink! Plus I keep hearing about people's accounts getting hacked, their identities stolen, viruses spread through it, all kinds of spam, etc., etc., etc.

If it really is that easy to delete your account, maybe I'll sign on to it on August 5, vote on August 6, and then delete the account. ;)!

Please please please vote for the Chicago Zoological Society on August 8 -- our beloved Brookfield Zoo :)

I'm backing out of this contest/voting. It seems that in order to vote, one must agree to the following -

Toyota 100 Cars for Good is requesting permission to do the following:

*
Access my basic information
Includes name, profile picture, gender, networks, user ID, list of friends, and any other information I've shared with everyone.
*
Access my profile information
Current City

I don't feel comfortable doing this.

Uh oh.. I didn't know about that.

That's way over the line. I wouldn't want to do it either under those conditions. I'm going to let them know at the Humane Society too, after I have a chance to look into that more.

That's too bad. This is such a good cause.

You should encourage them to apply for a pepsi grant. They can apply the first four days in August for September's contest. The application can be found here: http://www.refresheverything.com/official-application-guidelines

They can apply for 5K (20 grant recipients), 10K (15 grant recipeints), 25K (15 grant recipients) or 50K (10 grant recipients).

If they do and get in, be sure to let us know. I'll jump onboard and call in the troops :)

Pat, I just sent HSHV an email about this. Asked if there is any other way to cast a vote for them without giving out so much info. Will let you know if I hear back.

Most apps on facebook require access to all your "everyone" information. It's just part of it. Even having games like farmville, or taking quizzes give you that alert before you can allow the app on facebook. :(

That is the reason I don't play any of the games, nor participate in any quizzes.

Isn't that great?! They will use it for cruelty investigations.
