California cat shot in head with arrow, survives

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – A northern California cat that survived being shot through the head with an arrow was recuperating from surgery on Tuesday, apparently little worse for the wear, authorities said.

Max, a three-year-old black and white cat owned by a Santa Cruz area couple, was apparently shot with the arrow sometime over the weekend, a fact his owners discovered on Sunday evening.

"According to the owners, the cat had been missing for two days and when they opened their front door the cat came in," Santa Cruz County Animal Services Manager Todd Stosuy told Reuters.

"That's when the owners, much to their shock, saw an arrow sticking out of the cat's head," he said. "The cat was acting normally, eating normally. It almost looked like one of those fake arrows."

Stosuy said Max was taken to a veterinary hospital that night to have the arrow removed, under anesthesia.

"It went in one side of the cat's head, went through the ear and then out the top, it doesn't look like it hit the animal's brain at all," he said.

Authorities so far have no suspects in the shooting, but Stosuy said an animal control officer working full time on the case and canvassing the neighborhood had already developed a few leads.

He said if anyone was found to have shot Max intentionally, that person would likely face animal cruelty charges.

In the meantime, he said, Max's brush with death has made his owners more cautious.

"The cat is actually a very rambunctious guy and trying to get back outside," Stosuy said. "But the owners have decided that he's an inside cat now. He's under house arrest."

Yes, indeed... just one more of so many reasons.

So glad that Max survived this! And that his owners are now making him an indoor cat.

One never knows what evil lurks outside to a cat that is left to roam. My cats will remain indoors, or, on a leash where they can be supervised. To me, leaving my cat out on its own would be like leaving a toddler to roam the streets unsupervised.

I remember another story years ago of the exact same thing. It scares me to know there are sick people out there in this world. :(
I always had outdoor cats growing up and the worst they faced was getting hit by cars. As soon as I got my first cat as an adult (Taz) I swore I'd never have an outdoor cat again. And I have stood by that.
It always makes me sad to see kitties outside. Even our neighbors let their two cats out during the day. I still don't like it. We live near a busy main street. Previous occupants of that same house lost one of their cats to the busy road. :(

So glad Max is okay!!

I agree! I just do not understand how anyone could do this.

I did not read the article the first time I responded but I just now read it. Go glad this adorable kitty survived and his owners are smart enough now to keep him inside. This story just makes me want to go home immediately and love and hug my 3 kitties.

Unfortunately, that's common around these parts. Not too long ago the exact same thing happened to a cat near here. Lots of people contributed to pay for surgery for the little guy and he survived but he had an awful time and many surgeries b/c he was shot w/an arrow and a gun. The lady who rescued him kept him, thankfully.
