Dolphins Save Dog From Watery Death
Dog was in the water for 15 hours before getting help
By TODD WRIGHT, NBC Miami

Turbo might be a bullet on land, but the 11-year-old Doberman was a lame duck in the water until he was saved by two unlikely heros - curious dolphins.

The flippery rescue rangers were drawn to their usually land-dwelling mammal relative after the dog somehow became stranded in the waters off Marco Island, NBC 2 reported.

Cindy Burnett, Turbo's owner, said the dog got out of the yard Sunday night but she couldn't find it. He was found Monday afternoon in a canal by a neighbor drawn to the struggling dog by the splashing of two dolphins around it.

Officials said Turbo might have been in the water for as long as 15 hours and was in severe distress when it was finally pulled out of the water.

"The lady here who had gotten him out of the canal said, 'No, the dolphins were with him,'" Burnett said. "it was a miracle. "If he had to tread water all night long, I know he wouldn't have been able to."

Turbo has fully recovered from his ordeal and actually had a chance to thank the dolphins who rescued him, although he was going into the water to do it.

On Wednesday, camera crews checked on the spot where the incident happened and two dolphins surfaced briefly before disappearing into the canal.

Oh My Goodness, I'm glad the dog didnt drown. It sounds like something from the old tv show Flipper (about a dolphin) where Flipper would create a lot of noise & jump up and down if he needed attention or help for some reason. Thanks, I had not heard about this incident... Kay in NC
