My computer has started to make funny noises & I had a auto
shutdown the other day. (Thermal Event was the error message) I have
a feeling there is a lot of dust, hair, etc built up inside the computer case
itself and I need to have it cleaned out. I wanted to avoid having to
carry the tower over to a repair shop & do without my computer for
several days & was wondering how hard this is to do myself. Have anyone
ever done this themselves? Is it better to take it somewhere?

It is quite easy to do, but best done in a clean area so you don't add more kitty hair, etc. to the situation. Unplug everything, spread out some newspapers, and open the case and you will likely see the dust. It's best to not touch anything but the fan, you can use "canned air" to blow the dust off the delicate parts and onto the newspapers, which you can then just recycle as normal! The fan you can dust using a cloth, just make sure not to touch anything else.

My husband always cleans his PC himself. As Karen describes, it is quite easy to do.

I clean mine every few months. I could build another kitty w/all the fur that accumulates!

Compressed air is the way to go - or if you have a compressor, use it on a low speed.

All fans - the ones on the back of the tower, spray from outside so that they spin REALLY fast. I also spray the vents in the power supply - the large metal box that is located inside the computer; on the outside is where the power plugs in.

Here's a good YouTube I found on dusting out a computer.

About a year ago, I had two clients who were terrified that their computer was toast! It wouldn't run at all. I pulled off the side...I swear there were cobwebs there and a TON of dust. Cleaned it all out, and it ran perfectly! :D
