Happy New Year everyone! May you and your furfriends have a wonderful and healthy year 2011!

Over here in Germany, winter came early this year, and we already had a lot of snow. Today, it was raining which makes the snow look ugly and dirty. And we haven't seen a blue sky, or the sun, for many weeks. It's getting depressing.

Here are some pics I took a few days ago, dull and gray, and kind of depressive:

It's not depressing, they're lovely! I think we Northerners have a better appreciation for the nuances of silver ad grey in a winter landscape than others!

What beautiful photographs, Kirsten.. Thank you!

Depressing weather can make for some stunning art.

A snowcovered lane
Lined with trees
Whose overarching branches
Form a lacy canopy of black and white
Beckons and forbids the viewer all at once
Would you be the one
Who dares mark the spotless blanket of snow
With your pedestrian tracks
Or will you, like we
Simply stare, longingly and wonder
What mysteries await
At the turn of the expanse
At the end of the arched path?

Gld you like them, thank you! :)

Karen, what a beautiful poem! Who's the author?

Wombat, it's not only looking cold, it was cold! So cold that my face was frozen and I could barely talk (which was probably a good thing...)! lol

Black & White photos are incredible! :) I am more drawn to b/w than color when it comes to photography. Great pictures, Kirsten. I love your work.

Amazing pictures again Kirsten. Wish I had your talent with a camera. Looking at that snow made me feel the cold and dampness.

I hope the new year will see you feeling much better than last year.

I could probably write something for every photo you take - were we closer, we'd have to collaborate on a gallery show together! Hey, maybe we should anyway!

Hey that sounds like a plan for Karen and you :)
Wonderful pictures- and 2 more months of cold to come ;)

Kirsten

Yup - or what about a book with Karen's poetry, illustrated with some of my pics... ;)

And yes, unfortunately, you're right about the 2 more months of cold and darkness. I'm so tired of this already!

What wonderful pictures, Kirsten! My favourites are the first four - and they're not depressing at all. However, I could do with less snow and cold weather, too. ;)

Kirsten, I always always enjoy your photos! You do amazing things with that camera of yours. Thank you for sharing them with us. I hope you don't mind but I always seem to save some of them and a lot of times one of your photos is on my desktop. Right now I am using the first one that you posted in this thread. Thank you!

Great pics! And not depressing at all :)
Winter will be long this year, as cold and snow have started very early. Let's hope we'll have a nice spring.

Robin, of course I don't mind! :D

Sonia, I'm afraid you're right, but I'm already tired of the winter!

Thanks! :) Well, maybe I just find them depressing because this weather IS depressing! lol

And yes, I always thought that pictures and poetry work great together... :)

Even though you & Karen live far from each other, the internet connects
you, so it wouldn't be impossible right? You provide a picture or theme, and Karen could supply a poem to go with it.:)

You'll both make millions.:D:D J/K of course, but it would be great.;)

I think that is a FABULOUS idea. Please, both of you, start working on it! You two would create a wonderful gallery show.. Perhaps a book too.

Branches bare and trunks black against the snow
Stand their silent vigil
Lining the road in ordered ranks
Like soldiers at attention
Never moving as the vehicles go by
Moving slower in the unplowed snow
Still they stand, abiding steadfast
Waiting
Whispering softly in the storm
Waiting
Bearing snow
Bearing rain, and ice
Waiting
Not for orders
From some lofty general
But for spring

Beautiul.:) The trees look like silent sentinels, guardians of Winter.

I really wish I could print this out to put on a wall.:)

Again, Karen, a very beautiful poem, and an interesting association to those silent trees in a row.

Guardians indeed!

Many years ago, I made a photo that is still on my photography website (http://www.kirsten-scheffel.de), called "The Five Watchers":

This poem made me remember this pic... :)
