Sorry I haven't been on PT for a while folks.
The last few weeks have been pretty hectic after a growth was spotted in my wifes thyroid. So it's been scan after scan after biopsy after biopsy.
I have to take her to Sydney today, she'll be operated on, on Monday. The docs have decided whatever the growth is, it's gotta come out like NOW.
So I'm going to be gone for a week or two.
I'll let you all know when I'm back.

Good thoughts going your way! I know a couple people who had their thyroids out entirely, and just have to take one pill every day to keep their hormone levels normal, and life goes on just fine. Paul had half his thyroid removed last spring, and suffered no ill effects, so I'm hoping your wife's Sir Jury will be as uneventful.

A friend had this surgery a couple months ago. She was pretty sore for awhile and had to have radium implants. She takes thyroid replacement along with iodine supplement and is doing great now.

Guess who I thought of when I saw this?! But I wanted to see if it's really a wombat. Here is another one that looks rather like an Ewok, at least to me.

Thanks everyone, for your well wishes and prayers. Karen says to thank you all to.

We arrived back home last night, and I have spent the day cleaning up the mess that my 18yo daughter has made

Karen is ok now, and is recovering from the op.

We drove down to Sydney last Friday for her appointment with the Anaesthetist, spent the weekend on the beach at my mothers house, and then on Monday morning Karen was operated on.
A 1"x 3/4"x 1/2" tumour was removed from one of her parathyroid glands, and during the op she had some heart trouble, so when she left Recovery, they kept her in Intensive Care for a day and a night. She was taken to cardiology for some tests, and all was fine, but they kept her in hospital for another day to be sure. I suspect the heart trouble could have been caused by the aneasthetic....I've been told it happens sometimes.

Anyway, all is well now. She's still moving a little slow...except when I cook for her, then she moves fast....hee hee.

Good news. Yes, general anesthetics can cause heart trouble...a friend of mine who has had two heart attacks has very limited options for anesthetic if she needs surgery.

I hope you are spoiling Karen rotten, Wom! Karen, let the dust bunnies gather and add a bit of ketchup and salt to your hubby's cooking ;) . Just rest and get well.

Yay, Wom and Mrs Wom are back! Mrs Wom, my mom has had this surgery two times. Both times she was very hoarse afterward and had sore throats. Since then she gets her blood calcium level checked 2-3 times a year because it runs a little high; but otherwise, she is fine. The second time, the tumor was so slow growing that the doctor watched it for months before he decided to remove it.

Mrs. Wom, I hope you are feeling better and better each day! Wom, bless you for taking such good care of Mrs. Wom! (((hugs)))

My mom's calcium level is always a little high. Her lab's normal is 8.5-10.3 and hers is usually between 10.7 and 11.4. Her doctor wants it checked every 4 to 6 months, no exceptions. The closer it is to normal, the longer he waits.

I'm so glad she is doing well. Yes, anesthetic agents can cause problems, and not only in humans. My cat, Duffy, who was just 11 at the time, arrested as one of the IV solutions was being given - he was going to have his teeth cleaned. Fortunately a bit of Epinephrine and some stimulation brought him round. He, also, spent the night in the ICU, as he was diagnosed with an innocent murmur several years ago. All is well now.

Well yeah, I am a good caregiver. I have even bought paper plates to eat off so that she won't be faced with a sink stacked high with dirty dishes for her to wash when she fully recovers.
I'm good at that....planning ahead. :p
