During last week's cold snap, the Calgary Fire Department saved some people and puppies that had become overcome by carbon monoxide fumes.

When crews arrived at the home, the two puppies had already passed out from the gas, so the firefighters used special masks to revive them.

The people in the house got out, but they had also starting to feel the effects of the fumes.

"I think I fainted, just very briefly. It was just like being extremely tired. I just wasn't sure what was happening, but I couldn't stand up. My legs were jelly and so I just sat on the floor and as soon as I had air outside, I felt much better immediately," said resident Caitlin Dillman.

The problem was traced to the furnace which was working overtime in minus 30 degree temperatures.

"The number one thing we can suggest is a carbon monoxide detector because it is colourless and odorless. It's something you can't see and it's happening, it seems to be coming more and more prevalent," commented Rob Zimich with the Calgary Fire Department.

On Saturday, the family brought their puppies to the fire hall to say thanks.

The family now has now fixed the ventilation problems around the furnace and has installed carbon monoxide detectors.
