As some of you know, probably through FB, as I haven't really posted about it here, my husband, Coop, is having a very bad time. He has bad back trouble, for years, but it has reached a peak in the last several weeks. He's been through (lately) several rounds of meds and three doctors, and is going to see a specialist on Wednesday. The basis if the diagnosis is stenosis of the spine with other disc issues. The latest MRI shows further narrowing and deterioration and he can barely move. He's also having lightheadedness and dizzy spells (both new) which we thought were the narcotics previously (briefly) prescribed, but that's not the case. I cannot tell you how worried I am and how scared he is. He's a rock of a person and this is killing him. He actually asked me to bring him Pinot (our kitty for those who don't know) just so he could hug her. He couldn't bend down or pick her up.:(

Please, prayers for healing for a wonderful man who has the biggest heart in the world. Thanks for listening.

Note for those from FB-he asked me not to post on FB as he has too many relatives and friends who would be too concerned...

Maggie, is there any specific treatment for stenosis?

HUGS!

The treatment options at this point are not pleasant. It will probably involve surgery if they can't, once again, get things calmed down. I'm hoping there's some new therapy he can try; surgery is not something either of us think would be the best option.

Thanks everyone for the prayers - I'll report after the specialist tomorrow.

My assistant suffers from spinal stenosis. She is on various pain meds, but she also wears this thing that is attached at her hip, and it sends nerve signals out to negate the pain that she feels. I'm not sure how to explain it other than, it crosses the pain signals and she feels less pain with this contraption that she wears. Has he been offered anything like that??

Catty1

I think Lut had something like that installed. It worked really well for her back pain.

ETA They're called TENS units - here is info from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transcutaneous_electrical_nerve_stimulation

Good News! NO SURGERY YET!

Just got off the phone with Coop; Stenosis and the compression between L4 and L5 are still not good, he could do a compression surgery, which would only put him out of commission for a week, but he doesn't think that's necessary at this moment. He said fusion surgery is an eventuality; but not now.

He thinks the severe pain mid-back right now is NOT as a result of any of that. It could be muscular and just requires physical therapy!! :D

Thank you all for your prayers and information; it seems we may be OK on this one!

Maggie , my husband has spinal stenosis too; it meant he could no longer work and had to retire early. When we went to China , however, a friend took him to the Chinese medicine hospital and arranged for some acupuncture treatment. It took a few weeks but it really helped with the pain and made him a lot more mobile. Just a suggestion!

Coop has our sympathy and prayers for some relief from this.. we know how it feels!

As I understand it (and I'm not a neurosurgery expert), part of spinal stenosis management is to put off a spinal fusion as long as possible and only do it when it is absolutely necessary. (because once you fuse L4-5 you have to keep tabs on L3-4 and L5-S1 because you've altered the motion of the spine by doing the fusion) I hope the PT will work great! Thoughts and prayers! --- elyse

I can so relate to your worry and concern. It's very hard to watch them be in so much pain and feel there is nothing that can be done short of surgery. My SO has the stenosis, plus other problems (5 bulging discs, 2 herniated discs, scoliosis, stenosis and osteoarthritis of spine). He's resisting the surgery angle for as long as he can.

A suggestion for your hubby.....if he can try acupuncture for the pain. It won't fix the problem, but for the pain - it makes it manageable. And it's really doesn't hurt. My SO has accupuncture every 4 weeks and it has helped him unmeasurably. He was very skeptical at first, but after watching our dachshund go through acupuncture and get better, Dick changed his tune. That was three years ago and he swears by it now to help manage the pain. Just the change in his outlook has made it worth it.

Update!

Physical Therapy began this week. There was an hour and a half evaluation on Monday, and yesterday they "put him in traction". He explained this to me but I would never do it justice. He was in a traction type system, but it also involved a heat/steam therapy at the same time, some stretching and proper positioning. It already seems to be helping and has put Coop in a much better frame of mind. Thanks for the prayers - we seem to be in a good place! :)

Prayers going out to Coop, hoping that he will be back to "normal" really soon. Just got out of the hospital this a.m. with the same surgery, and now should be on my way to complete recovery. I've already noticed the lack of the pain in my hip and leg, so something is going right already. All that I have now, is just pain from the incision, and that should be fading fast! I had a spinal lamenectomy (sp) in Jan 2005, on my L4-5 and it gave me instant relief, unlike I had known in over 30 years, despite morphine and so many other narcotics. I still say it was one of the best decisions I ever made. Due to a congenital defect, I'll also need surgery on the L3-4 (above the first surgery) but, I'll be so happy to be relieved. Spinal stenosis sucks. It didn't seem long until I was able to do more activities than I had in all those years. I hope and pray that Coop will feel like his old self again (sing in that shower Man!). He has 2 wonderful nurses.

This is the first step in surgical procedures (the second is hopefully many years in the future); it's the decompression surgery to relieve the disc pressure. As for the bow...sorry, insurance doesn't cover that. ;)

Setback. Spent five hours at the emergency room last night due to Coop's pain. They examined him, consulted his surgeon, pumped him full of dilaudid (sp?), gave him a prescription to fill for that medicine (within the next four hours at 2am), as the double dosed Oxycodone was no longer effective, and set him loose. We found a 24 hour pharmacy after several calls, got the medicine and got home at 3am.

Just venting a little: we were there because his pain could no longer be managed at home. His surgery is Thursday morning at 8am; we drove specifically to that hospital ER (not exactly next door) because that's where the surgery is to be performed. They released him at 2am WEDNESDAY - do you think they could have admitted him until 8am THURSDAY?? That answer would be no. Believe me, we tried, the techs tried, they would not admit him. :(

I hope this all works out for the best.

Who is they? The surgeon? In most case, if the doctor won't admit him, the hospital can do nothing - unless you find another doctor to take over. When I broke my ankle, the Ortho Resident wanted me to have surgery that day. The Attending Surgeon couldn't be bothered to come out on a Sunday, so home I went until Tuesday.

But I wouldn't want Coop getting an infection (upper respiratory, UTI, etc) between 2 AM Wednesday and 8 AM Thursday. Many many patients hospitalized because of infections of various sorts this time of year. Funny that they couldn't move him to the surgical schedule for Wednesday though. :(

"They" is the attending and Coop's surgeon (via phone). We had the nurses and techs on the side of admitting, especially since Coop almost passed out twice with his pressure dropping dangerously low, but no go. There is also a problem with his white cell count indicating an infection somewhere that was mentioned a couple of times. I just pray it all goes well, as I know you all do too, and I greatly appreciate it.

He's pain free!!!:D:D

I'm just astounded - surgery was at 10:30, by 2pm Coop was in a basically upright position and eating lunch! I left the hospital at 4pm; the nurse asked his pain level and he said ZERO!! I just got off the phone with him, and he was able to walk to the bathroom (sorry if this is TMI;)) WITHOUT PAIN! Note: he is on NO pain meds; there is a morphine pump for him that he hasn't used!

The point of staying in the hospital tonight (they might have released him if we hadn't said to his doctor up front we wanted him to stay) is to SLEEP. He is so sleep deprived from the pain, and I'm glad to say, I believe he will actually SLEEP!

Thank you all so much for your prayers and good thoughts. Your love and caring is so much appreciated - more than you'll ever know!!:love:

Great news Maggie - I was thinking about Coop all day and wondering how he was doing, but I see he got the good results too. The wonderful thing about decompression surgery, is that it works immediately! As long as everything stays where it belongs, then he will remain pain free.

Mine was done just 2 weeks ago today, and I had a fusion too. No way anything can move with titanium rods and screws in there. It's been heavenly not having that constant leg and hip pain that I had for well over a year.

I know Coop is ecstatic and I don't blame him. Tell him I was asking for him, and that I'm so happy it turned out well. :)

I hope the nurses give him something for sleep and then stay out of his room all night long so he can REST! (when I worked on the floors I reluctantly awakened many sleeping patients on the third shift) Fingers tightly crossed for a very good night's rest :)

Coop is home for Christmas Eve and I couldn't be happier. While he is not completely pain free he is MOSTLY pain free and moving around really well. I thank you all for your love and concern, and would like to relate a story from his stay in the hospital you might appreciate.

The PT nurse came in to get Coop up and walking. He told her there was soreness and some residual pain. She said (keeping in mind my husband is a good bit over six feet and not a small man) "Have you ever been stuck on a long flight in the middle seat with no way to move? That's where your discs have been for the last couple of years. It's going to take a while to stretch out." I loved the analogy!

Off to cook my hubby's family's traditional Christmas Eve shrimp dinner for just us!

Happy Christmas Eve and Merry Christmas everyone!

What a wonderful Christmas for you and Coop! I couldn't be happier! I'm just so thrilled Coop is happy and sleeping.

Ya know, with both my surgeries (cervical and spinal fusions), I too was almost pain free for the first time in 30 years. It's heavenly! The doc fused bone from my hip and sacrililiac (sp) joint and that was the only discomfort. I don't remember using any morphine. Compare to what I lived with all those years, it was a piece of cake.

Coop..it only gets better! You have a lot of singing in the shower to catch up on!!! Sleep tight and MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!
