I had a day off during the week and the weather was so nice that I went for another alpine hike. I started in a small Austrian village just at the other end of the border and followed the Tor brook uphill. It has a canyon but I was walking on the upper rim of it.

The mountains in this area are called the Karwendel mountains and I could see them coming closer as I followed the brook:

In this region there are not only sprice and fir but also mountain maple. They are up to 800 years old. They will be golden in autumn but were still green:

The trail continued into the narrow valley between the mountains in the back and then began to climb the back of the mountain in front: 3000 ft climbing.

The cross looks like the top but it was only a saddle 600 ft below the top. The sun was wonderful and I have a sunburn on my legs;)

On the other side the view was even better:

I climbed down into the valley of the Rohn brook. There were cows (of which I did not take a good picture *blush*) and another mountain maple.

Down in the village where I had left my car I met a friendly native – a Haflinger horse which is typical for the Alpine regions:

And I went to a café where they had wonderful cheesecake. The Germans are not bad with cake but the Austrians are even better. And after 6 hrs of hiking you can have as much cheesecake as you want ;)

Wow what a beautiful scenery! :) I don't like cheese cake, but I love the mountains - those we don't have here.

You must have been tired after 6 hours of walking - I bet you slept well!

Thanks for sharing.

Gorgeous pictures, and thanks for sharing! I love cheesecake, but save it for special events - a 6-hour hike would certainly count!

Barbara, your pictures literally took my breath away! I often hike in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York with my cousin and there's no way to describe what we hikers see. Two years ago Soncat spent 2 weeks in central/eastern Europe with the International Scholar Laureate Program. On their way back to Vienna (I think) their bus went by way of the Alps. He said the beauty was so overwhelming they didn't know where to look.

A mountain hike on a beautiful day and some cheesecake.....perfect!

Thanks for sharing!

Beautiful! Autumn must be magnificent there!
It's nice to live in a place where mountains are not so far so that you can go for a day ;)

Wow, how beautiful! I can't imagine 800 year old trees. They've been there since before Columbus made his discoveries. Beautiful! And the native horse is beautiful, too :)

It looks absolutely wonderful, Barbara, and you definitely earn the right to pack away a few calories after that. :D
