I'm sure some of you remember Lady, my friend Melissa's dog - she's a german shorthair pointer. She and Nebo grew up together, she's been to plenty of my "dog parties," Strut Your Mutt, etc. with us. Well a couple of weeks ago she was bit by a snake, in their own yard. Her foot swoll up like 3 times the size it should be. They took her to the vet and the vet did what they could...had her on IVs, had her there several days, when they first took her in there was a 50% chance she wouldn't make it. They thought she might have to have her leg amputated. My friend and her husband spent around $2,000 keeping her alive.

They sent her home and thought everything was doing okay, they were taking her to the vet every day or so to get her bandage changed. Well last week Melissa called me crying, when she went to look at Lady's foot the skin was just coming off and bone was exposed on two toes. The vet had just said it was healing well but it must have took a turn for the worse. The vet that had been treating her before said she needed to have the toes amputated and they needed to go to a speclialist which they coudn't afford.

They talked to some local vets and found one that would be willing to do the surgery. The problem is, they were out of money, they couldn't afford the surgery so if they couldn't find help they'd have to put her down. Neither parents really "get" the whole dog thing and wouldn't be understanding with spending money like that on a dog especially after what they'd already spent. So that's where I came in...couldn't see Lady being put down for a surgery that would fix her, so I lent them $1500. I have a house payment and plenty of other bills plus four dogs so it's not like we have that kind of money either but we'll be okay without it for a while. I hate to bother Pet Talk when I haven't really been a part of it lately, but if anyone would be willing to donate even a couple of bucks it would be greatly appreciated. The vet wouldn't do a payment plan so they had to get cash from me. So any money donated would be money I'd tell them not to pay back, if that makes sense. I know this sounds like a scam or something now that I'm reading it, its not, I don't know what else to say. I have paypal, its [email protected] if you donate something put a note about Lady so I know. Thanks in advance for any help, I hate to ask, just trying to help out a long-time friend. Just prayers and good thoughts that her troubles will be over and the recovery will go well would also be greatly appreciated. :)

Oh, and she had the surgery last Friday, they only had to amputate one toe. As far as I know it all went well haven't talked to her since friday. I don't have the internet right now so I can only update when I'm at my parents house stealing their internet. :o

Thanks you two. :) As far as I know she's still doing well, though they were wondering if the other toe might have to go too. :( They are hoping it will heal up okay and not have to do that. I wish I could afford to just give my friend the money but we're not that rich. If anyone wants to call the vet that did the surgery I can get the phone number for you. Thanks again. :)

Just wanted to say that Lady seems to be in the clear, they only had to remove the one toe and her foot is healing well. Melissa said missing the toe kinda throws off her balance here and there but she is getting along great. I still haven't had a chance to see her myself yet, need to get over there and take some pics for you guys. Thanks again for the help Terry and Anna. :)

That is great news! I think she can adap better, easier, morquickly to a missing toe than a missing leg.

Do they still have no idea what caused this? Weird stuff our dogs get in to!

It was caused by a snake bite, they don't know for sure what kind of snake but it likely could have been a rattlesnake.

Thanks everyone, and thanks so much Phred for your help! The bill is still $1040 if anyone wants to help, the surgery ended up coming to more around $1200 so they gave me $300 back already.
