My boyfriends vet called him with the biopsy results. Its an aggressive cancer that grows rapidly but they do not believe itll spread, its only localized....and neither his vet, or my vet thinks they will ever be able to get all of it out of that joint, so tuesday morning, we are amputating. The vet doesnt feel lumps anywhere else and he is eating, drinking, pooping and playing fine.

We are waiting on his bloodwork, itll be back today or tomorrow..so if you could spare some good thoughts for us, id appreciate it.

My boyfriend lives about an hour away, and he is very very squeamish, if he sees blood, bloody bandages, he passes out...so Kiki is being operated on at my vet, and he will stay here with me until he is all patched up and ready to go home with his daddy.

Here he is at the vet this morning....

Thanks in advance!

Aawww - poor Kiki. Good news tho, that it doesn't appear that it has spread.

Prayers for Kiki, that all goes well, and he is up and learning to maneuver with his new and revised anatomy, in no time at all! :)

Prayers for you and "dad" too.

The CREW is sending their best. Demetri in particular as he is a tri, he says to tell Kiki not to worry, it only slows the jumping down. But it brakes work great if you drop your butt to stop.

Prayers for Kiki, that this is life-saving for him, and that he recovers quickly.

I'd be surprised if there were "bloody bandages" as I think they suture up with some extra skin and it is quite clean.

But still, you get to spoil Kiki at your place for a while, and give him some pain meds.

Looking forward to a good update!

Aww, I was hoping it wouldn't come to this. But at least they feel they can get rid of it and Kiki will live a nice long healthy life after this.

While we were waiting for the biopsy results, he actually bit into the tumor and we bandaged it...he got it off, we bandaged it again, even with the e collar on. He bled real bad all over Kris's place....and today we were at the vet because its actually infected now. But he told me he almost passed out when he saw the stitches from the previous removal, so with his leg totally gone, itll probably make him queasy.

I just cant wait to get it over with. Ive had family over from NY and weve been juggling work, collars, bandages, with grandmas visit.

Poor KiKi. They can analyze the tissue from the leg in much more detail after the amputation.

Smokey the Elder looked like Frankenstein's Kitty but didn't bother the staples. They didn't bleed at all. She was the best patient ever. She hopped up the stairs the night I brought her home.

The only thing is that if he has an itch on that side, you need to scratch it for him. Smokey used to twitch her hip joint when she needed a scratch.

Awww! Kiki, heal fast and don't freak out your Dad to bad.. You will find that getting around on 3 legs is not that difficult with a few minor adjustments.

(Fingers crossed and prayers sent that that will be the end of it!)

Best wishes to Kiki and you all. He'll be up and around in no time and never even notice.
I have to chuckle at your bf beings squemish. Leave it to the women folk to take care or what needs taken care of. LOL! My boyfriend wretches and gags at picking up kitty or puppy poop. I'm the pretty dainty sort that won't pickup heavy things and there are just somethings I expect (opened doors etc) but when it comes right down to it, I'll pick up the poop and wipe up the puke without a thought. LOL. Must be the meowmie in us all!
Kiki, you have an ace nurse and you'll feel good as new in no time flat!
Love,
Claudia & Calvin

I'm sorry to hear that it's come to this but it's the best thing for Kiki and he'll be just fine afterwards. I have friends w/a 3 legged cat and he's a marvel and doesn't let it stop him one bit. It's all kinda scary in the beginning for you, especially for your boyfriend, but all will be well very soon. Mega prayers going up for all of you. In the meantime, keep the faythe.

My boyfriend brought over the paperwork this weekend...its a grade 3 fibrosarcoma.

Anyone have any experience?

Fister and I send lots of good thoughts for your handsome KiKi. It sounds promising that the cancer hasn't spread and I'm sure he'll be hopping around in no time. I believe cats handle amputations a lot better then humans.

Dear KiKi, I wish you a very succesful operation and lots of happy years ahead of you!

So sorry that your boyfriend's cat will have to have his leg amputated, but at least it's not spread and this will save his life. I totally understand the squeamish boyfriend syndrome. Mine can't even deal with the smell of canned cat food!! He freaks at raw chicken. LOL. So, totally understandable about not wanting to have to deal with blood and bandages, he'd probably pass out and then where would poor Kiki be?! Up a creek!

Good thoughts going out to you and to your boyfriend and Kiki. I hope the surgery goes smoothly and the transition to having only 3 legs will be an easy one for Kiki.

Sending good vibes for a fast recovery! I fostered a kitty who had her leg amputated while under my care, and she healed up FAST and does very well on three legs to this day. Hopefully Kiki will do just the same! :D

Is radiation or chemo indicated? From my huge data set of two cats :p they seem to tolerate chemo quite well; don't know much about radiation. I'll need to dig around for info on fibrosarcoma.
[ETA] I googled fibrosarcoma, and unfortunately it wasn't encouraging. This can be an aggressive cancer; the fact that it's on the leg might make it more manageable. You'll need to consult with your vet. Are you using a feline oncologist? They probably have more recent possible treatments than some of the dated stuff I found on a very quick search.

I think thats because up to 60% of the time it shows up on the thorax or lungs, very rarely the leg. They think its a vaccine induced sarcoma...I also read (and was told by the vet) that it was unlikely to metastasize but EXTREMELY hard to remove surgically. I told my bf if this grew somewhere else, we probably wouldnt have this cat. Some vets are recommending vaccines in the leg or tail now so that if this cancer pops up, amputation is an option because the way the tumor grows, with spindles...all you have to do is leave one spindle, and in a few weeks that tumor will be back.

We did consult a specialist but the problem was there was not enough skin to close over his leg and very rarely are they able to get all of it, even the oncologist recommended amputating....They think the fibros that occurs on the neck or back (vaccine site) are more aggressive then the ones elsewhere....(foot) he doesnt have cancer anywhere else and as of yesterday, Kiki is 3 legged.
