I thought I'd start a new thread and not polute Jax's intro thread. I wanted a place that I could go with issues relating to Paizly on Jax's arrival.

So, she is a nervous wreck! She still comes to us for attention, but you can just feel the tension in her body. Then you'll be petting her and she'll suddenly turn around and hiss and/or growl at you (even Zoee).
Just now Paizly was at one end of the house with Bruce trying to pet her and I was at the other end of the house and he said she would flinch with every sound I made. She's afraid the little cat is going to be out.

She will try her hardest not to walk down the hall if the door is open to the room where he is, even if the gate is up. Which won't last long because he's already learned to climb one gate so I've been putting up two. He'll figure that out quick.

This is breaking my heart. I know I haven't given it a chance yet and I do not intend on giving up. But it's just so difficult. I just need to vent things sometimes.

I will take any advice anyone has as well. I might not be able to do all of it, but I'll take it. Otherwise, thanks for listening to me. :)

Since Jax is comfy in his carrier, maybe put him in there a couple of times where Paizley can sniff and not see him moving around in 'her' space.

Aside from that, just the usual..isolation, switching blankets/sleeping items each cat uses with the other cat's so they get used to the scent.

It's only been a day or so...chin up!:)

I'm sorry to hear that Paizly seems to be so stressed out.:( Have you ever tried using Feliway spray or diffuser? This may help a lot because it has a calming effect. She's also probably hissing at everyone because she's trying to let you know that she's upset with this new arrival. In my experience this has only lasted 3-5 days but I know that some cats take much longer to accept another cat. My RB Sunny would just try to ignore the newbie and he wanted me to baby him even more. All cats are different so please try not to stress out too much because your animals will pick up this stress from you and they'll also become stressed. I'm sure that things will eventually work out. Good luck.:)

My Mac is very, very, Alpha Cat and when I brought Ming into the house, things were very dicey for awhile. Mac was about 5 years old then and Ming was about 3 months old. Mac would get extremely agressive whenever he saw, heard, or smelled, Ming. It was horrible! It took two months before I could even THINK of allowing them to meet in the same room, with Ming in a carrier. I never gave up, but it was very hard and I had to have a ton of patience. One day, Ming slipped out of the bedroom and ran into the living room, and Mac. They fought hard and furiously for about three minutes and then they had it settled. Mac was Top Cat and Ming was his minion. To this day, 7 years later, it is still that way. Today they were sleeping together on the bed. Yeah, it willl happen.

Wow, thank you for the quick responses ladies. :D

I know I haven't given it ANY time yet. But I just hate seeing her this way. I asked Bruce if he thought she'd ever calm down and he said yes. So that made me feel better.
I will do the thing with exchanging their scents. Actually, Jax doesn't have a problem. I was holding him and Paizly was hissing at him and he only fluffed up his tail, he never hissed or growled back.
It will be hard to do the carrier in the room and Paizly to see/sniff around it. She'll just run off and go under the bed, chair or in the closet away from it. But I'll give it a try later in the week.
I do have feliway spray. I could try spraying that on her collar. Thanks for the idea Tracey. :)

I love hearing success stories on this subject. Mac and Ming's story really gives me hope. Since I've sorta been through this once with Taz (age 13) and Paizly (age 2 months). But Taz tolerated her. He'd hiss or growl a teeny bit, but nothing like Paizly is doing with Jax.

I know I need to just have patience and relax. And I will work on that. :)

Oh, I almost forgot one question, again. When she is hissing and growling at him what do we do? Do we just ignore it and let it happen, or do we talk soothingly to her to try to help her calm down? It's hard to sit there and watch her throw a hissy fit, but I have been doing a bit of both. Ignoring it and talking calmly to her.

In the past I've just tried to ignore it and let the cats work things out. Now if she attacked little Jax and was hurting him then I'd intervene but if they're just rough housing then I'd leave them alone. I'm pretty sure that she'll remain the alpha cat and Jax will learn the pecking order very quickly.

If he was more aggressive and alpha like then you'd really have problems but his personality sounds ideal for Paizly. I've also found that it takes females a bit longer to accept new additions and they're much more vocal about everything. My Pearl sure was and she and Ziggy will still sometimes get into growling/hissing matches but it amounts to nothing. It's just a sibling squabble and nothing more. Good luck.:)

I've had it take as long as 3 weeks before being able to allow the newbie to roam freely.

Slow, slow, that's the key. Maybe have him out with you and put HER in that room he is in with the door closed, so she gets used to his scent, while he explores and learns places to hide and such. But give that a few more days before doing that.

Taz_Zoee
06-14-2010, 11:44 AM
I can ignore it pretty easily, but Bruce is the one I need to train. :p But if I explain it to him he'll understand.

He is to darn small to let him roam the house anyway. I bought him a collar with a bell on it yesterday and he freaked out. I thought it was because he wanted to play with it, like he had toys that had bells. Well, I got a toy with a bell on it and he freaks out at that too and won't go near it. So he doesn't like bells. But I'll have to just get his name tag and a charm so I can hear the jingle of that. That's how Paizly's is because she kept losing her bells.

This morning Paizly seemed more relaxed. I did spray Feliway on her collar last night right after I posted here. She was wanting pets and even played for a bit. Funny thing is she goes to the dogs beds and rolls around on those to play. Never seen her do that before. Maybe because it's a familiar smell.

Thank you so much for the support! It really does help me. :)

Sherpa flipped out like that when Charlie was hospitalized for a few days and then smelled wrong when she came home. Stroking one cat and then the other with a washcloth (So they smelled like each other) seemed to help him calm down.

Welcome to a major kitty temper tantrum! Paizly is hoping if she makes your life miserable enough, the little intruder will go away. Chester is like that. When he learned Winnie and Angel weren't going away, no matter how much he hid under the bed our growled and hissed at me, he got used to them.

Just give Paizly lots of pets and luvies and hang on.

Another good idea I can do! :) We often go to Paizly after petting Jax and that's when she either won't let us touch her or she hisses at us. But she's even hissed when I've washed my hands after touch Jax.
Ok, so tonight I will take the towel and pet Jax then go pet Paiz.

I seem to not have as much patience when it comes to upsetting my animals as I used to when I worked with kids. LOL But I know she will eventually be fine. And we are making sure to spend lots of time with Paizly so she doesn't feel left out. Last night while we were eating dinner she jumped up in Bruce's lap. Normally she knows she is not to go anywhere near the table top while we are eating. But Bruce let her stay since she was so stressed. He was done eating anyway. ;)

That's what I'm thinking....once she realizes he's not going away she'll just have to deal with him. I didn't do that when G was here because I knew he wasn't staying forever.

I just talked to Bruce and he said "we can do this". :D Yes we can!! And by we I mean us and my PT family.

We introduced Moon and Bean when Moon was 8 and Bean was 5 (I think). Moon had been an only child his whole life. Bean only knew other cats from his outdoor escapades. We kept them separated for 2 weeks. Moon still had the upstairs of the house and Bean got the finished basement (which he still owns, by the way... :)). After 2 weeks we opened the door and Bean crept upstairs slower than any living thing I have ever seen. I think he moved a millimeter an hour...haha. When he got to the top step, he had his whole body on but not crossing the landing.

They have lived together for 2 years now and they certainly worked it out. Yours will too :)

Slowly, slowly, and slowly. Slow this all the way down. Tell Bruce he runs the risk of ruining this introduction forever, if he can't slow it down. Your allegiance needs to be with your house kitty, not the kitten. The kitten will adapt.

Also- cats read us like books. Please calm yourself down, you are distressing your Paizly.

Actually Bruce is the one telling me it will all be okay. I just want to make sure he knows not to reprimand Paizly or intervene when she is hissing. I told him today on the phone and he understood.
I know I need to remain calm. It is becoming easier. At first I was just so upset for upsetting her. But I know she will come around. And I am making double sure that we spend our quality time with her. :) Thanks Cataholic.

This reminds me of when I first became a multi-cat household. Way back then, I only had one cat called Lucy Jane. She looked lots like Grandma does today.

Then baby Leroy showed up outside my kitchen window. He decided he wanted to live with us. I said no. So, he would run around and around the outside of the house, all night long, yelling as loud as he could. After a few days of that, I gave in and brought him inside.

Lucy Jane, was not impressed at all!!! She didn't hiss at him, she hissed at ME!!! It was like: You did this! It's all your fault. Make him go away!!!

She was in a snit for weeks but finally got used to him. (and stopped hissing at me. until I brought Leonardo in of course) :D

Thanks for the story. :)

I made Mr Jax an appointment for the vets tomorrow night. He needs one of his shots and just the introductory visit at my vet.

We actually had to use 2 baby gates on our bedroom door with the Nikki introduction.... We would open the door for about 30minutes sitting with them to encourage them to investigate each other and reward with positive behavior when they would get really worked up that was it for the night...It took around 15days. Just to be safe we would also remove Nikki from the room yet leave her food, bedding and litter box (she was checked by the vet first) for the others to investigate for about an hour a day for about 15 days just so they didn't have a threat of actually seeing her. It seemed to go ok? Nikki and Squeek still don't get a long we just hope that eventually the two of them will work their differences out or get tired from old age and just let it go...The vet said they might never get along... We just moderate the fighting... But you will see one day it will all just work itself out. They are funny little creatures... But I totally understand the position you are in right now...You wonder if you made the right decition... You did!! Just give them a bit to work it all out... They will be good before you know it. Good Luck!

LOL, Claudia that is good!! :D :D

Heidi, we do have two baby gates. He hasn't mastered clearing both of them...yet. Paizly did early on when she was a kitten. Right now I only have one up but the dogs are in the hallway so he's not attempting to climb it. He's laying by the gate watching the dogs. :)

Yes, I guess if I can't get cuddling kitties I would just ask that they tolerate each other. That's good enough for me. :D

I know I keep saying the same thing, but this is breaking my heart. :( I want to cuddle and love on Paizly but she smells Jax on me and then hisses and runs away from me. I try to approach her for a pet and either she gets up and leaves or lets me get a few strokes then leaves. :(
I know it takes time and trust me, I'm not giving up. It's just so sad.

I didn't even get to do the towel scent transfer tonight because she hardly let me near her. I will have to try again another day.

Yes, I was going to PM Catty1 if she didn't respond here.
Now she's just confusing me. Last night she was a mess and then this morning she was playing and running zoomies all over that end of the house. I heard her while I was in with Jax. That made me feel better. I guess nights are harder on her because the door has been left open (with the gates up) for most of the day. Where as it is closed all night so mornings are more relaxing.

Isabel, I have been giving her treats. The problem is she can only have about 3 or 4 of these treats or she will throw up. The first time I gave her some of them after Jax's arrival, she didn't touch them. Then I tried again later and she didn't touch them again. This morning I showed her where they were and she ate them. So progress is being made..........I think. I hope!

I'm pretty late to reply and I see you already had many advises. I am not a specialist anyway, but I just wanted to say that a similar situation occurred with Peppito when I brought Jasmine home. He was hissing at her, hissing at us, and finally never never attacked her. He was even hissing at us when we wanted to trim his nails, something he never did before, as if saying "I need these claws, I am the boss, don't touch them". Now they are buddies. They do not sleep in cat piles, but still they like being together. The only thing Peppito still does after 5 years is hissing at Jasmine and chasing her when she is back from the vet. When they have catnip he also tends to be a little aggressive with her. For the rest, all is fine :)

Bruce just took the dogs outside, I am at the computer and Jax's door is closed. Paizly was in here with me and she jumped down from the chair and I watched her walk out of the room. She was standing in the doorway, her tail twitching. Then she walked over by Jax's door and sniffed toward the bottom of the door. No hissing or growling. Usually if we have the baby gates up she hisses as she runs by even if Jax is not in sight.
Bruce was gone for a long period of time today. So I'm hoping maybe she ventured over to sniff around the closed door without any distractions from us or the dogs.

It is a teeny step of progress, but its progress! :D

ETA: I left the door to his room open while I took him to the vet so she could possibly go explore. I don't know if she did or not because Bruce and the dogs were outside the whole time.

Patience seems to be the key. I remember will Tigris' and Filou's introduction, they were both babies, 12 and 16 weeks old and it took them a week before they talked to each other.

I was supposed to give Paizly another dose of Feliway on her collar last night and this morning, but it's too hard to do by myself (I don't like adding more stress to her). Even without it though she seems much more relaxed. Although, she is still not really going around the room. I also haven't seen her around when the gate is up and she can actually see into the room. But the fact that she seems more relaxed is a good thing.

You just wait! I will have cuddling cat pictures before you know it. And I'll wonder why I was ever worried about all this. :D :D

Paizly seems to be coming around. Tonight I was in with Jax and she actually came up to the gate to see him. Usually she'd run by hissing. She did hiss but not too much. She actually stayed there for quite a while and Jax stayed right by the gate looking at her.

This morning I went to pet her belly and she wasn't having it. But I played a little rough with her for a while. Then when I walked back through the room this is what I saw:

Aw, Paizly reminds me of my RB Peeka, not in looks but personality. She was furious when I added Pidgie to the family. She never did warm up to Pidge but eventually they learned to stay out of each other's way; this happened after I brought Creamsicle in. I have no idea why but she seemed to add some calm to the situation. It will get better and better every day. Keep the faythe. :)

Well this morning she wanted to sit in the bathroom window again. One thing I'm noticing about her is her meow is much different now. I actually sat in the bathroom for a while to pet her when she'd let me. She lets me pet her but not like before. She used to rub her face all over mine. Hopefully she'll eventually get back to that.
But yes, she seems a little less upset about the whole situation. This morning she was sitting outside Jax's room and when I looked out at her she meowed at me. LOL I think this weekend we might try a brief introduction without a gate in the way. We will see! :)

My Paizly Problem is OVER!!! :D :D
This morning I was in the room with Jax and I didn't close the door all the way. It was open like an inch or two. I saw Paizly out there. Bruce didn't know and let the dogs in the house so Paizly ran. When the dogs came in they charged into the room. I had Bruce put them back outside, so the door was open a little wider now.
Jax ventured out into the hall. One of the baby gates was leaning up against the wall right outside the door. I was crouched in the doorway with my niece and I was holding the gate up so it wouldn't fall over. Jax went behind the gate while Paizly was on the other side. Then there was a four inch gap between the gate and the bedroom door that was open. He kept going back and forth behind the open door and the gate. Paizly started playing with him!!
Eventually Jax came out from behind the gate and it was all over then. They ran around the bedroom playing up a storm. Paizly would start to chase him and then he'd turn and chase her. She would get away from him by jumping up on the bed. He hasn't mastered that skill.......yet.
So we just let them play for almost an hour. The dogs weren't very happy because we put up a gate at the end of the hall so they couldn't interrupt. So now I just have to work on getting all four of them in the same area at the same time. I brought the dogs in the house on leashes earlier while Jax walked around them. They did good, but they like to pounce on the cats. I can't let this happen while Jax is so tiny. Soon enough it will all be good!

I have a few pictures of Paizly and Jax's play session but I'll have to post them this afternoon.

Thanks again everyone for your support! I can just see the cuddling kitty pictures in my mind. :D :D

Please excuse the nasty floor. I vacuumed the rest of the house yesterday, but not the bedroom because Paizly was in there and I didn't want to disturb her since she's been so stressed.

See the reflective part under the dresser? My niece said he was following his reflection and batting at it with his paw. HA HA, silly kitty!
And do you see Paizly on the right?

I just love this picture of her!

He was laying on the bed in the most relaxed position. Not in the meatloaf, like he was ready to run. He had his back legs to the side just relaxing.

That's it! :D

Cute pictures.:) He sure is tiny compared to Paizly and she's in the 7-9lb range right. He may be younger than what you were told or he just won't be a very large cat. It looks like he's trying to puff up in the 3rd picture.

Wonderful news- just right for a Sunday morning. Paizly is such a pretty kitty- and I am so glad she found a play pal.
BTW I admire Jax' typing. Not one wrong key;)
I can't wait to see the first cuddle pics :)

I think that the fact that Jax is so small is a help as Paizly does not have to be afriad of him.
Soon her maternal instincts willtake over and they will be very good friends and curling up soon, once Jax gets tired from racing about like a lunatic!!:love::love:

Yes, Paizly is around 8 - 10 lbs. The last time she was at the vet she weighed 7. That's been a while, so I'm sure she's closer to 10 now.

I keep telling her she is the boss and to let him have it. He will charge at her and she runs away. One of these days (maybe when he's bigger) she will not run and she will show him who is boss. :p

Thank you everyone! :D

Well, I thought I'd update this thread and add a couple pictures.

Paizly is still not stressing about Jax. But she's not being nice to him. She still hisses and growls and smacks him around. He doesn't back down and takes it like a man. LOL But I just wonder if I will EVER get my cuddling cat pictures. :(

Here are two recent pictures of my beautiful Paizly Poo.

She has taken over sitting in the bathroom window EVERY morning. This was Taz's job.

I really like this picture of her too. See who is in the background? He always has to be in the picture. :)

Paizly sure is gorgeous and Jax is getting so big.:) Both of my girls still hiss and growl at my kittens too but I've also caught them playing with them and they'll also lick their heads sometimes too. I just think that the females can be so nasty at times. Good luck.:)

Paizly won't let Jax get close enough to even think about licking him. He tries to snuggle with her and she throws a fit and runs away. So he has resorted to snuggling with the dogs.
I have seen them playing and doing the lock and roll play. Where they lock on to each other and roll around. That's the closest they've even gotten and even that only lasts a few seconds.

Thanks! :D

I'm so glad to get caught up on the saga of Paizly and Jax. I thought of you, knowing that Taz's anniversary had just passed. I know that you still miss him but am glad that Jax is helping to provide a distraction and an outlet for all that kitty love you have to give.

Thanks Medusa and Cindy! I've missed you guys and the wonderful animals here too. I think of you often. Sometimes I want to come, but then I am overwhelmed with how far behind I am on all the news. It makes me feel good to know that you guys remembered me, much less missed me. :)
