A surgical team at the Vascular Birthmark Institute of New York has dedicated their efforts to fix a lymphatic malformation on Maddox's face.
CTV's Daryl McIntyre was there as Maddox was prepped for surgery. Maddox's mother is expected to arrive in New York Friday evening to help take care of son.
The surgical team was led by Dr. Milton Waner who says today's surgery focused on the lymphatic abnormality that created the disfigurement specifically around Maddox's eye.
"It won't all be done at once. The rest of the abnormality will be removed in September," said Dr. Waner.
Following Friday's surgery, Maddox will also have to go back for a second surgery that's booked for September, which will work on the malformation on his cheek.
Dr.Waner explained that procedure could take as many as nine hours to complete.
The first procedure is costly with a $50,000 pricetag. Originally Maddox's parents wrote a letter to the province's out-of-country health services committee hoping for help to pay for the surgery, but the process is timely and the family did not want to wait until the next available date for surgery.
That's when the donation began to pour in. Maddox's story has compelled people from across the country to reach out and donate to the young family. As of Friday afternoon, the family had received $214,000 in donations.
The doctor believes the two-and-a-half-year-old will be up and running around Central Park again by Sunday.
