My nephew is turning one soon. I want to get him a nice toy but I have no idea whats out there for that age, its been a long time since I shopped for a one year old.

So for those moms that have toddlers...what do you recommend? What would you have liked your child to receive, if there is some kind of learning involved in the toy that would be great.

How about a book? My kids are grown now but books were always a good gift.

Since I think building toys are the all around best toy and love Lego bricks - how about a starter set of Quatro blocks?? Either that or Duplo - just bigger chunkier versions of Lego. It has been a VERY long time since I had a toddlers - but I know that all three of my grown kids *still* own and play with Lego!! :D

I like the Quatro idea. I was in the Lego store last month and the guy told me it is VERY hard to find these days. BUT, the girl in the store also told me Lego only came in 2 sizes...so, maybe they flat out don't know anything? LOL.

A book is nice, too. A flap book, a cloth book, something to 'do' with a book at this age is nice.

One suggestion- no stuffed animals!!! If I had a nickel for every stuffie we have collected over the years I would be wealthy.

Yeah I agree with the stuffed animals...and barbie's for girls...my girls never played with them.

Thanks for the ideas...

I'm also going to suggest a book, or maybe a simple shape sorter.

one year olds.. awww.. they get amused with the box the toy came in.. lol

maybe some educational toy.. like a book with buttons which you press and say numbers.. or animals... since at 1yr they should start trying to talk they can get introduced to more and more words...

the car is nice and mine still likes his.. but he doesnŽt fit in anymore.. lol.. although his doesnŽt has the handle..

my kid looooved thid little people farm that had animals and made sounds.. also a steering wheel with car sounds... and a fridge magnet with the alphabet that said animals name with that certain letter..

IŽll try get a link for you online

By the way I want to spend 50-100 on the gift...

If you are inclined to spend that kind of cash on a 1 year old, do 75% in a CD or straight deposit into a bank and 25% on a toy. Really, it just isn't worth that sort of cash for a one year old. Toys are toys are toys at this age, and most favorite toys of one year olds are the simple, large muscle type thing...like a shape sorter..for about $15. Anything else, IMO IMO IMO is simply a waste of money.

Little People toys are great, and they will be played with for several years. Our baby boy is 10 months old, and gravitates toward those toys when he goes into his sisters' room. Our girls are 2 1/2 and 4 and still enjoy them.

Another option is one of the toys that starts as a push-behind walker and converts to a ride-on toy as he grows.

I am leaning toward the push behind walker that converts..my kids got a lot of use out of the right toys.

As I never had children, all I know is: do not give a toy that makes noise - the parents will NEVER let you forget it! :D

Buy a savings bond, and a small toy.

I was just coming back to suggest Little People. Nathan got this Little People barn for his first birthday, and nearly 2 years later it's still one of his favorite toys. http://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Little-People-Animal-Sounds/dp/B000EQGT00/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1266963975&sr=8-1

Another of Nathan's favorite toys is a ride on/push behind John he got for Christmas when he was 8 months old. He still loves it today and he's nearly 3 now. http://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Little-People-Animal-Sounds/dp/B000EQGT00/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1266963975&sr=8-1

I was going to suggest Little People, too. Lyra got a "Little People" school bus and park set with lego-like things. She loves them, especially the bus! She really likes putting things in the bus and moving it around.

What about some nice clothes too? Kids grow so fast they always need new ones!

I think your choice of the whisper ride buggy is awesome, and since you are the aunt, well i say go ahead and spoil him if you wish, i would love to receive that gift for my child from someone, there are just so many awesome toys out there today, i am a big fan of wooden toys myself though.

I say anything with wheels is ok, since boys like cars, trucks, Trains, and tractors etc. If he is a mature 1 year old I suggest a wagon. I gave my son Mike a wagon for his first birthday since he had been walking since he was 8 months old. He actually pulled a load of 7 kids down the sidewalk at his Birthday party. Kids also love the cloth books that you read to them at least 400 time in their next 6 months. If you make a mistake they let you know.
