Songs with city names!

Rising Sun- Animals

There is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God I know I'm one

My mother was a tailor
She sewed my new bluejeans
My father was a gamblin' man
Down in New Orleans

----------

City of New Orleans- A Guthrie

Good mornin' America, how are you?
Don't you know me? I'm your native son!
I'm the train they call the City of New Orleans
I'll be gone 500 miles when the day is done

Dealin' cards with the old men in the club car
Penny a point, ain't no one keepin' score
Pass the paper bag that holds the bottle
And feel the wheels rumblin' neath the floor

A little tip of the hat to the Champs.:D

Me and My Bobby McGee - Janis Joplin:

Just before it rained
It rode us all the way to New Orleans

"I've Been Everywhere"

I was totin' my pack along the long dusty Winnemucca road,
When along came a semi with a high an' canvas-covered load.
"If you're goin' to Winnemucca, Mack, with me you can ride."
And so I climbed into the cab and then I settled down inside.
He asked me if I'd seen a road with so much dust and sand.
And I said, "Listen, I've traveled every road in this here land!"

[Chorus:]
I've been everywhere, man.
I've been everywhere, man.
Crossed the desert's bare, man.
I've breathed the mountain air, man.
Of travel I've had my share, man.
I've been everywhere.

I've been to:
Reno, Chicago, Fargo, Minnesota,
Buffalo, Toronto, Winslow, Sarasota,
Wichita, Tulsa, Ottawa, Oklahoma,
Tampa, Panama, Mattawa, La Paloma,
Bangor, Baltimore, Salvador, Amarillo,
Tocapillo, Baranquilla, and Perdilla, I'm a killer.

[Chorus]

I've been to:
Boston, Charleston, Dayton, Louisiana,
Washington, Houston, Kingston, Texarkana,
Monterey, Faraday, Santa Fe, Tallapoosa,
Glen Rock, Black Rock, Little Rock, Oskaloosa,
Tennessee, Hennessey, Chicopee, Spirit Lake,
Grand Lake, Devils Lake, Crater Lake, for Pete's sake.

[Chorus]

I've been to:
Louisville, Nashville, Knoxville, Ombabika,
Schefferville, Jacksonville, Waterville, Costa Rica,
Pittsfield, Springfield, Bakersfield, Shreveport,
Hackensack, Cadillac, Fond du Lac, Davenport,
Idaho, Jellico, Argentina, Diamantina,
Pasadena, Catalina, see what I mean-a.

[Chorus]

I've been to:
Pittsburgh, Parkersburg, Gravelbourg, Colorado,
Ellisburg, Rexburg, Vicksburg, Eldorado,
Larimore, Admore, Haverstraw, Chatanika,
Chaska, Nebraska, Alaska, Opelika,
Baraboo, Waterloo, Kalamazoo, Kansas City,
Sioux City, Cedar City, Dodge City, what a pity.

Keep On Rocking Me Baby - Steve Miller Band

Well I've been lookin' real hard
And I'm tryin' to find a job
But it just keeps getting tougher every day
But I got to do my part cause I know in my heart
I got to please my sweet baby, yeah

Well, I ain't superstitious
And I don't get suspicious
But my woman is a friend of mine
And I know that it's true that all the things that I do
Will come back to me in my sweet time

So keep on rock'n me baby
Keep on a rock'n me baby
Keep on a rock'n me baby
Keep on a rock'n me baby

I went from Phoenix, Arizona
All the way to Tacoma
Philadelphia, Atlanta, L.A.
Northern California where the girls are warm
So I could be with my sweet baby, yeah

Keep on a rocking me baby
Keep on a rocking me baby
Keep on a rocking me baby
Keep on a rocking me baby
Baby, baby, baby

Keep on rocking rocking me baby
Keep on a rocking rocking me baby

Don't get suspicious
Now don't be suspicious
Babe, you know you are a friend of mine
And you know that it's true
That all the things that I do
Are gonna come back to you in your sweet time

I went from Phoenix, Arizona
All the way to Tacoma
Philadelphia, Atlanta, L.A.
Northern California where the girls are warm
So I could hear my sweet baby say

Keep on a rocking me baby
Keep on a rocking me baby
Keep on a rocking me baby
Keep on a rocking me, rocking me, rocking
Baby, baby, baby

Keep on a rocking me baby
Keep on a rocking me baby
Keep on a rocking me baby

Here's one for "Songs About" VII and VIII ... When Irish Eyes are Smiling

Sweet Home Chicago ... the Blues Brothers (and loads of other artists)
Chicago (That Toddlin' Town) ... Frank Sinatra

O, Canada (We were talking about national anthems at lunch today. The Star Spangled Banner doesn't name our country and I don't believe God Save the Queen does either, but I could very well be wrong on that. I wonder what other national anthems do or don't name their respective country in the lyrics?)

Please Come to Boston by Dave Loggins
has several cities:

Verse 1:
Please come to Boston for the spring time.
I'm stayin' here with some friends and they've got lots of room

Verse 2:
Please come to Denver with the snow fall.
We'll move up into the mountains so far that we can't be found.

Verse 3:
Please come to L. A. and live forever.
California life is just too hard to break.
I live in a house that looks out over the ocean.

And the Johnny Cash classic "A Boy Named Sue" has
Well, it was Gatlinburg in mid-July
And I just hit town and my throat was dry,
I thought I'd stop and have myself a brew.

I love L.A.!!! Randy Newman.

Hate New York City
It's cold and it's damp
And all the people dressed like monkeys
Let's leave Chicago to the Eskimos
That town's a little bit too rugged
For you and me you bad girl

Rollin' down the Imperial Highway
With a big nasty redhead at my side
Santa Ana winds blowin' hot from the north
And we as born to ride

Roll down the window put down the top
Crank up the Beach Boys baby
Don't let the music stop
We're gonna ride it till we just can't ride it no more

From the South Bay to the Valley
From the West Side to the East Side
Everybody's very happy
'Cause the sun is shining all the time
Looks like another perfect day

I love L.A. (We love it)
I love L.A. (We love it)

Look at that mountain
Look at those trees
Look at that bum over there, man
He's down on his knees
Look at these women
There ain't nothin' like 'em nowhere

Century Boulevard (We love it)
Victory Boulevard (We love it)
Santa Monica Boulevard (We love it)
Sixth Street (We love it, we love it)

I love L.A.
I love L.A.
(We love it)

The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway- Genesis.

And the lamb lies down on Broadway.
Early morning Manhattan,
Ocean winds blow on the land.
The Movie-Palace is now undone,
The all-night watchmen have had their fun.
Sleeping cheaply on the midnight show,
It's the same old ending-time to go.
Get out!
It seems they cannot leave their dream.
There's something moving in the sidewalk steam,
And the lamb lies down on Broadway.

WALK BETWEEN THE RAINDROPS - Donald Fagen

A shadow crossed the blue Miami sky
As we hit the causeway by the big hotel
We fought
Now I can't remember why
After all the words were said and tears were gone
We vowed we'd never say goodbye

My Old School- Steely Dan

California tumbles into the sea
That'll be the day I go
Back to Annandale
Tried to warn you
About Chino and Daddy Gee
But I can't seem to get to you
Through the U.S. Mail
Well I hear the whistle but I can't go
I'm gonna take her down to Mexico
She said oh no
Guadalajara won't do

"Cleveland Rocks" - Presidents of the United States of America

"Graceland" - Paul Simon
I'm going to Graceland, Graceland
In Memphis, Tennessee
I'm going to Graceland
Poorboys and pilgrims with families
And we are going to Graceland

"Route 66"
Well if you ever plan to motor west
Travel my way, take the highway that’s the best
Get your kicks on Route 66

Well it winds from Chicago to LA
More than two thousand miles all the way
Get your kicks on Route 66

"Take Me Back to Chicago" - Chicago
Take me back to Chicago
Where my music was all I had
I tried to be as good as I could
And sometimes that made me sad

I still dream of the lake of peacefulness
The warm summer breeze
'Cause my life was so much simpler then
Street corners and Tastee Freez

"Come Monday" - Jimmy Buffett
Headed up to San Francisco
For the Labor Day weekend show
I got my Hush Puppies on,
I guess I never was meant for glitter or rock & roll

Back in the USSR
Flew in from Miami Beach, BOAC
Didn't get to bed last night
Oh, the way the paper bag was on my knee
Man, I had a dreadful flight
I'm back in the USSR
You don't know how lucky you are, boy
Back in the USSR, yeah

Cities-Talking Heads

Think of London, a small city
It's dark, dark in the daytime
The people sleep, sleep in the daytime
If they want to, if they want to

CHORUS

I'm checking them out
I'm checking them out
I got it figured out
I got it figured out
There's good points and bad points
Find a city
Find myself a city to live in.

There are a lot of rich people in Birmingham
A lot of ghosts in a lot of houses
Look over there!...A dry ice factory
A good place to get some thinking done

Down El Paso way things get pretty spread out
People got no idea where in the world they are
They go up north and come back south
Still got no idea where in the world they are.

Did I forget to mention, to mention Memphis
Home of Elvis and the ancient greeks
Do I smell? I smell home cooking
It's only the river, it's only the river.

LOL,

Tiny Dancer just came on the cable musis channel.

Blue jean baby, L.A. lady, seamstress for the band
Pretty eyed, pirate smile, you'll marry a music man
Ballerina, you must have seen her dancing in the sand
And now she's in me, always with me, tiny dancer in my hand
Jesus freaks out in the street
Handing tickets out for God
Turning back she just laughs
The boulevard is not that bad
Piano man he makes his stand
In the auditorium
Looking on she sings the songs
The words she knows, the tune she hums
But oh how it feels so real
Lying here with no one near
Only you, and you can hear me
When I say softly, slowly

Oh, here's an even better version of this that doesn't have them all fogged out by the smoke effects: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lNFRLrP014&feature=related This one also includes female members of the group!

I don't know how they do that with the hair, or if those are wigs or extensions or God-knows-what. Did you notice their shoes also are much longer than usual and curl up at the ends?

The Leningrad Cowboys are a Finnish rock band, and I think I read that the backup musicians really are the Red Army Choir (interesting direction they've taken since the breakup of the Soviet Union! :D). They've done many performances together.

Medicine man lead me up though town - Indian ground - so far down
Cut up land - each house - a pool - kids wearing water wings - drink in cool
Follow dry river bed - watch Scout and Guides make pow-wow signs
Past Geronimo's disco - Sit 'n' Bull steakhouse - white men dream
A rattle in the old man's sack - look at mountain top -keep climbing up
Way above us the desert snow - white wind blow
