with Theodore Roosevelt who was quite an outdoorsman and conversavationist ,
especially for those times. ...

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
Well, not quite.
Teddy came along a little bit AFTER the National Parks were first created.

See this write-up from the National Park Service web site >>>

http://www.nps.gov/history/history/h...iefhistory.htm (http://www.nps.gov/history/history/hisnps/NPSHistory/briefhistory.htm)

"The national park concept is generally credited to the artist George Catlin.
On a trip to the Dakotas in 1832, he worried about the impact of America's westward expansion
on Indian civilization, wildlife, and wilderness. They might be preserved, he wrote,
'By some great protecting policy of government... in a magnificent park....
A nation's park, containing man and beast, in all the wild and freshness of their nature's beauty.'

Catlin's vision was partly realized in 1864, when Congress donated Yosemite Valley to California
for preservation as a state park. Eight years later, in 1872, Congress reserved the spectacular
Yellowstone country in the Wyoming and Montana territories
'as a public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people.'
With no state government there yet to receive and manage it, Yellowstone remained
in the custody of the U.S. Department of the Interior as a national park ÷
the world's first area so designated."

So ... George did it! http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/wink.gif

I have a Senior Lifetime Pass. Cost me $10, and I can visit any of the National Parks. Wish I could say we'd seen more of them. Pictured Rocks in the Upper Peninsula is gorgeous, and Petersburg National Battlefield and Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia are both small but very interesting. There are two in my home state of Rhode Island - Tuoro Synagogue in Newport, and Roger Williams in Providence.

When did Roger Williams become a National Park??

That was the place Dad had to take us for the Sunday afternoon drive just to get out of the house, where we went to the fireworks on July 4th, and where Dad absolutely had to take us as little kids to take pics of us when the flowers were in bloom. Remember the big flower bed that was planted to look like the American Flag? That takes me WAY back!

It's not the Roger Williams Park you're thinking of.
Not the one with the carousel and the zoo.
This is Roger Williams National Memorial on North Main St in Providence.
Here it is. (http://www.nps.gov/rowi/index.htm)

I remember it. It was where I got brave enough to first ride the up-and-down horses http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/smile.gif
Then later I even took a chance on catching the gold ring.
There is a carousel there now, but I don't think it is the original one.
When I was out for my high school reunion, we visited the Park,
rode the carousel and checked out the zoo.

Thanks for the information, Gretchen.
I didn't know about the Senior Pass. I want one!
I just went to the NPS web site to find out how to get it.
It says "The pass can only be obtained in person at the park."

Is there one anywhere remotely near here?
Which is the nearest one?

Thanks!

Here you go! (http://www.nps.gov/findapark/index.htm)

Click on a state and you'll see where the parks are.
The closest in Michigan is Sleeping Bear Dunes up near Traverse City.

There's one in northwest Ohio - Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial -
that's not really far from us.

Thanks for pulling this out of the DH, Phred.

Don't forget, though, besides National parks, there are great spots normally right in your own backyard!

(And those spots are one of the reasons our backyard is where it is!)

Right On!

Do a 'Google.com' using your "STATE + PARKS" and you'll dig up a
wealth of information on your local parks.

And try your "City's Name + Parks"; and your "County's Name + Parks".

While I was in school in upstate New York I used to go to the Saratoga Battlefield. (Not sure if it's a national park per se.) It's hard to believe that such an unspoiled looking place was the site of battles during the American Revolution!

We visited Zion Canyon National Park, which Wolfsoul has taken gorgeous pictures of, quite by accident, on the way to the Grand Canyon. It was a stunning surprise!

We have many state parks near us, some teensy on the Boston waterfront, and bigger ones. I have never been to the Cape Cod National Seashore, but Paul has.

I love our National Park system!! Whenever we are nearby one, we always go. I've been to quite a few, and I don't think I could pick a favorite. There are many in Colorado, but I haven't been to Mesa Verde or Dinosaur Ridge yet. Hope you don't mind if I share a few pictures of the ones we have seen in Colorado- I'd encourage everyone to come see it in person, too!

Here's Rocky Mountain National Park- the most popular park here.

The Sand Dunes- which is sooo amazing in person.

It's funny, because last night we watched "Night at the Museum 2" (free from Redbox, gotta love it) and the Teddy Roosevelt character claimed to have founded the National Park system, so it's easy to see where the rumors come from. Not that I get my facts from popular culture, but it's easy to do!

I think pictures would be great, Jill, thanks for sharing yours! I just don't have any handy, but next time ...

Monty Python did a movie about King Arthur seaerching for the Holy Grail.

His entourage gets to a bridge guarded by a being who asks a queston-if your answer the question correctly you can cross, if you get it wrong you get tossed into the abyss!

The guardian of the bridge asks Arthur about the speed of a laden swallow....

Watch it for yourself?;)

What river is it? And whose footy-prints are those?

The great majority of the pics are from the Little Susitna River, basically any pics that have dark water is the Lil Su. Any pics with white or glaciated water is the Big Su.

The paw prints are from a bear we had in camp on the Big Su, the shoe prints in those pics are my size 14s.

THis is Floatzilla.

It was a small Floatzilla that year, it has been 3x's bigger with multiple rafts along with the canoes and floating docks all tied together.

Great pics so far!!!!

In 1984 we travelled around in eastern USA, and visited several NP's.
I was smitten with the beauty of nature, so many breathtaking views!!

We were living in St.Louis Missouri at that time ('83-> '85), so we flew into Las Vegas airport, where we rented a car and started our trip from there.
We visited Zion , Bryce , Grand Canyon, Natural Bridges , Navajo , Mesa Verde, Yellowstone, Arches, Death Valley, Grand Teton, Monument Valley, Highway #1 long the Californian coast, and a few cities like La, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, etc..
I will never forget that trip! We have tons of good pics, but no digital ones......
