NASCAR coverage returns to the Speed Channel tonight, with the nightly show "Race Hub" at 7:30 EST, so I figured it was a good day to start our annual NASCAR thread.

Only 34 days til the 500, and 26 days til the Shootout...almost time to go Racing boys!!!

I almost started a NASCAR thread yesterday when I posted the link to the History Channel program, "Madhouse". You have to watch it! It was funny and really good.

Amazing what people will do and do to go racing! Check it out.

It's a weekly series about racing in the Winston/Salem area at a track that's known as Bowman Gray. It follows two families that compete against each other during a four month 16 race series.

I think they should change the name to "Nutcases".;)

The best part of the program?

One of the racers goes to a school where there are some 5-6 year kids to do a meet and greet.
He brings his car to the school and the kids are into checking it out. They start to chant, "Start it up". THe driver starts the car up, the kids are more animated and the last shot is of one kid jumping around yelling, "Junior Miller sucks!"

(Miller is the home track bad boy that wrecks people to win races...)

IT was a great program and I really look forward to watching the series.

But wouldn't a good scrap after a SC race be a ton of fun?;)

I was LMAO at the previews of the fights.

Imagine having to have a security detail walking you out to your car!:o

I have my DVR set to record everytime a new episode is on. I watched last night...looks like the off season has been good to Tony, Denny and Kasey. They looked relaxed and happy. Course for Tony, who wouldn't be after a 2 1/2 week vacation in Australia?

Daytona Fan Fest This week. Live coverage on Speed tonight 8-10, tomorrow 4-6.

Chili Bowl is in OK this weekend, Kasey Kahne and Jason Leffler are running. Tape Delayed coverage on Speed Feb. 13

Michael Waltrip is running the 24 hours in Dubai today. They are currently 1st in class and 10th in overall.

For anyone keeping score at home (and it may just be me entertaining myself!) Michael's team (which Marcos Ambrose was also a part of) was running 6th overall and had a good lead in their class when they got caught up in someone else's wreck. Not sure if they are completly out of the race or not.

So many places I would have loved to be this weekend...Fn Fest in Daytona, Chili Bowl in OK, Watching the dirt races in Tucson, AZ (Kenny Wallace is running there).....but I guess being at home keeping up on all of it on Speed, Twitter, and YouTube works too!

I don't know about the "twisted" hand, not being a lefty myself, but several of the drivers are actually left handed. Tony Stewart, Dale Jr, and Terry Labonte are the first to come to mind.

I finally got to watch all of Friday's Fan Fest coverage. Jeff and Joey were really funny, and so were Ryan, Matt and AJ. Haven't got through Saturday's yet.

looks like Hornaday and Kvapil are too. I know some lefties curl their hands around but Joey did it more extremely than most I've seen. It's like he was trying to sneak up on the Sharpie or something

You know I didn't even notice that Joey was a leftie when we met him in Charlotte, but it's the first thing I noticed the other night when he was doing his autographs. I didn't know so many of the guys were lefties.
Gosh and I even have a picture of him signing mom's shirt with his left hand. Boy am I observant:rolleyes:

Does anyone watch the "Lucas Oil/On The Edge" programs?

I love that show. The racing is great, But, the announcers are the best.

The yelling, screaming and "OHHHHHS" that come out o- their mouths is the
-unniest thing, I am sorry that they just do the highlights o- each race/event.

It reminds me o- watching the program with my stupid brothers and nephew.

We do the same thing-scream and yell like morons when we watch racing.

more info:

*K&N Filters will sponsor Grand National East and West Series for the next 7 yrs.

*Fuel injection in Cup by 2011. Some teams have already tested with it but the onlything holding it back is Nascar being able to police it in the garage area. Nascar developed and tested it in the last 8 months.

*Brian France met with each team, face to face, to discuss/listen to there ideas about the cars/sport.

*The next major change to the Cup car could be the splitter. France said they've been talking about doing something in that area and have received some negative feedback from the major car manufactures about said splitter.

*Spoiler change has nothing to do with the car getting lift when spun around backwards but more to do about the look and handling of the car. Nascar hopes to have the spoiler fully implemented for speedways by Texas Motor Speedway.

*More options with the roof flaps and the "Shark Fin" that will be added at Daytona will help with cars lifting off of the ground

* 63/64 inch size restrictor plate to be used at Daytona and Talladega, biggest since 1989.

*Yellow line rule stays for now but bump-drafting rules that have been in place at Daytona & Talladega will be eliminated.. Robin Pemberton says, "Boys, have at it!"

*France says once litigation is done with Kentucky Speedway they will be considered for a Cup date.

*John Darby has been promoted to Managing Director of Competition. Darby will serve as Cup Director until a new one is found.

*France says New York (marketing/sponsorship) office close to pulling two or three new sponsors into Nascar.

*NASCAR promotional video claims Nascar is the number 1 recycler in all of sports. Going green in more ways than one!

*France says "One of our chief architects" for iRacing (simulated racing on computers) is Dale Earnhardt Jr. NASCAR iRacing Drivers World Championship is launching on Feb 9th.

*France: ``We're putting things back in the drivers hands we're going to loosen up & the goal is to make very, very good racing, better."

* France says the goal is to open up the racing. "It's a contact sport and we want to encourage that." W00T!!!

*France mentions Jim Hunter, says his (cancer)treatment is ongoing and is soon to get clean bill of health.

*Nascar now is including its list of banned substances in the rulebook. Change from last year. Teams did preseason teasts and the drivers will be tested in Feb. <<< Thanks Jeremy!

*Truck series goes back to "traditional" pit stops and will have double file restart, yes, Shootout Style!

While Porsche purist here in the US would try to deny the Porsche V8 as being Porsche, should look closer at their linage. Porsche had a V8 sports car from 1978 through 1995 with basically the identical V8 engine used in both the Cheyenne and the Panamera. While not as popular in the US the 928 lived a long life in Germany and saw much racing competition.

But all the women before her are chopped liver?

There were girls racing before her, that are getting a short shrift in the media,

She's not first woman to race in ARCA, NASCAR, NHRA, MX or Rally Cars.

She's a media 'push' for NASCAR, who should be promoting the women VETERAN DRIVERS who have paid their dues in stock car racing.

What happened to Jill George?

My problem with Danica has many facets:

"I want to make sure I'm doing what's right for the Danica brand" -From an interview last year about going to NASCAR

Danica brand? Gimme a break. How about making sure you can drive the damned things?

She whines constantly on the radio in traffic.

She has trashed other female drivers, downplaying what Sarah Fisher and Janet Guthrie have done in racing. When asked about other female drivers who aren't Danica she gets downright catty.

She runs down Dan Wheldon in the pits, grabs him and starts yelling at him......yet she has caused many on track incidents through overly aggressive driving, to be polite, and has been shielded from criticism by the media.

She has huge money behind her, and a huge marketing machine.....but what has she won? One race in the IRL, nothing before that in lower divisions..........Without her looks, she wouldn't be where she is. She's done NOTHING to deserve it besides pose cute for the cameras.

Classic instance of the media playing to her? She checked up last night because she lost the car a little in the bumps, and before they even had time to look at what happened, DW had accused the driver behind Danica of driving rough and bumping her.....replays clearly show Danica simply losing the car a touch and backing out of the throttle, there's 2-3 feet of daylight between her car and the one behind her, yet, DW still maintained his position that the other driver had hit her.

Anyone else? They just checked up for the bumps. Danica? Couldn't be her fault, blame it on someone else.

I'm tired of the coverage, she's a rookie, there are 80 other drivers at Daytona, and they're covering Danica as if she's already a four time champion. The post race interviews were priceles....they cut to Danicavision immediately after a very short interview with Bobby Gerhart, and she finished 6th. Normally they'd be going after interviews with the others in the top 5.

Danica has done just what all driver at all levels is guilty of, namely, reacting to a perceived wrong. Is it ok for the men to react and not the women.

Most drivers whine over their radios. I have noted whining coming from most of the top drivers, DEjr & Denny being the worst.

You were obviously watching a different race than I was because she handled the bumps and other track conditions like a true racer. Keep in mind this was her First Nascar race. With time I see her becoming a real contender in Nascar. When she spun out across the grass,a lesser driver would have backed the car into the wall. It was not luck that she was
able to recover. Even if she was not hit, the bump at Daytona has put many Cup drivers in the grass.

The old man has been hyped by the media to the point that I get a little ill. Look at his record in it's entirety and he is just that hype. He is a fan draw because he is the old guy out there showing them how it's done.

Why does Nascar encourage top Cup racers to come down to Nationwide and dominate that series? They are allowing it for one reason, and that is to attract more spectators and keep their TV coverage. If Nascar passed a rule banning these drivers they would be giving Nationwide a death sentence at least for TV coverage. The POWERS are taking advantage of Danica and her draw for Nationwide and maybe Cup also before to long. Whether anyone noticed, the stands this last seasons, except for a few tracks, had huge sections that were empty. Seats were being discounted to get fans to the track. Sure Danica is being hyped by the Media (Nascar) because they have an agenda from the POWERS to promote their future cash COW. Nascar is a business, and they are going to do whatever they can to attract and keep a fan base. The 2010 rule changes were a direct results of their ever shrinking fan base. Face the reality, Nascar is BIG business and big business does whatever it can to keep the money rolling in.

I listened to Danica dearest during an IRL race in Texas. There were about 3 words about the car, and the rest was "could you tell the #xx spotter to get him to leave me room?" or "Why is the #xx getting so close" ad nauseum.

Given equal equipment as TK in the IRL, danica produced 1 win to TK's 9.

She's just NOT THAT GOOD. I'd love to see Sarah Fisher and Danica race, give them both an IROC car, and the winner gets the seat. But, Danica has the money, Fisher doesn't.

There was another female driver in the top 10 during the race last night......not one word about her until she was in 3rd. Danica was covered regardless of where she was in the field.

NASCAR wants to know why they were losing TV share? They were losing TV share in part because the race coverage SUCKS! Give me MRN on the audio and the TV on mute and I'm a happy camper.

The other drivers that NASCAR has courted are proven winners.

One win and a whole bunch of bridesmaid's positions may qualify her,but remember, When you PEAK you Win!

-------------------

I liken it to working in a Porsche dealership for years and trying to get the VP position...

Then someone from a VESPA dealership gets the gig, the money and the expense account.

It is marketing, but short of being "all that" by a bag of chips and the 64 ounce drink.

I would have no problem w/her if she had a likeable personality-she's second place in that category-from the standpoint of running after other drivers and getting in their face.

Wait until she pull a boner-no, not that KIND- and some NASCAR vet jumps into her "S", then everyone will side with her and talk about how mean, nasty and ugly the men are to a rookie that almost killed them.

It's not O.K. for a guy to get into a woan's grill, but, I don't see any problem with her trying to get some face time with a guy.

You look for three legs on a cat, you'll find four.

----------------------

Jill George took a real header and no one bothered to interview her afterwards.

She's just a shoulder that DP should be thankful that she's standing on.

Seriously?

Historically NASCAR has been an Old White Guy's Sport, I am OLDER than Mark Martin...and that SOB had better abs than I do.

Check out what R Petty talked about Willlie T. and the ticket he got. We've seen woman racers out there.. I am waiting for the black guy or Mexican.

JPM is not a Mexican, only in name?

So, As I see PD get roses thrown down as she approaches her ride, you have the rest of the woman-who blazed the 'track' for her- getting shoved to the side and literally being asked to labor in her shadow.

She may win a race in the future, But's let's remember the gals who she drafted to get there.

That's where the hard work was done for today's women drivers in NASCAR.

Ms. Sprint Cup is just there to hand our trophies!;)

Check out what R Petty talked about Willlie T. and the ticket he got. We've seen woman racers out there.. I am waiting for the black guy or Mexican.

I have read R Petty's article on Black men in Nascar. While accurate, technically it has flaws. I remember Wendall Scott and his struggles in getting into Nascar but he did make it into Grand National racing ( later called Winston CUP ) and did well considering his budget. Petty says that no Black man raced in the 600 at Charlotte. The facts are that Wendell Scott's last race was at the 74 Charlotte race. He was forced to retire because of an accident at Talladega earlier that year.

Nascar has had grass root efforts to get Black into Nascar. In the history of Cup racing there have been 9 blacks that have tried their hand at racing. The problem with trying to get blacks or hispanics involved is that they need to began at a very early age in some form of racing. My son at nine started racing 1/4 midgets and then went into Motocross. For anyone to have a career in racing you have to start very young and take their knocks in some form of racing be it carts or motocross. You can look back and there are traditional sports that are dominated by whites. Until Tiger Woods came along Golf was one of these, even though there were several Hispanic's that were successful.
Until someone starts at a very young age in racing I do not see Nascars culture changing. You have to have candidates before they can bring someone up. I know Nascar is trying to bring both woman and minorities into the sport.

I have a humble confession to make: I have disliked Danica for awhile. I didn't like her attitude and figured she'd fail miserably in NASCAR. But I gotta say... she's not doing as poorly as I had thought (and secretly hoped) she would. Granted she's only run a couple races so far....

I had really hoped Chrissy would do better today. I also would have like to see more of a replay to see if we could see what happened. I am not a fan of Paul Menard, and since his daddy bought his way into the race it makes me that much more upset if he did wreck her....

I also think Carl was getting too much blame for the big wreck with Junior. Yes, he came up, but Krashlowski came down at the same time. I don't think it was either ones fault (as much I would LOVE to blame Brad), they just both timed it a fraction it wrong.

Great finish!! Tony is amazing in the Nationwide race. 5 of the last 6. Perhaps Kevin and DeLana could build him a cup car?

I set the DVR for the truck race but for whatever reason it recorded 1 minute and quit. So thankful for social media...still had a great idea of what happened from Twitter. And of course the video's on nascar.com

In this case, none of them really qualified becuase of the rain...it was the luck of the draw. That does make it a little easier to accept that they bought out the other teams. And maybe now one of those teams (Parker Kligerman's?) will be able to run the whole race at California. Parker was only supposed to run the first 8 races of ARCA last year and was doing so well he finished the season 2nd in points. I know Nationwide is a whole nother level, but I would love to see him get some track time and sponsorship. Right now they were only scheduled to try the first 5 races this year.

He just won the biggest race of his career after losing his ride and winding up with a team no one knew whether it was going to have enough sponsorship to run the full year.

Pull his man card? What kind of sexist crap is that?

Men who have cried on TV.....Dick Vermeil, Brett Favre, Chocolate Myers, the entire booth at the 500 last night, Helio Castroneves, Allan Iverson...........

When you just pulled your entire career and possibly the existence of your team out of the trashcan with a win in the biggest race of the year, I think it's allowed.

Which would be fine...expect he has cried like that after every one (which is only 4!) of his wins. I'll give him a pass on this one, but should he wion again, and we see more tears, then it is time to think about pulling the man card.

Really? I don't get it. There is nothing wrong with men crying. What a race that was! The two long breaks while they attempted to fix the track. Think of how nerve wracking that would be. Anyway, he is a sensitive guy. I think that is better than a guy that has no emotions at all.

I've always seen Jamie as a rather un-talented pansy who catches a lucky break every now and again.

My problem is understanding why the 500 winner is so celebrated? Sure you gotta get in the proper line at the proper time but c'mon nobody wins the 500 on their own. Everybody in that lane needs a friggin' trophy for pushing the winner across the line, and they probably don't care who is at the front, they're just trying to get ahead of the other line.

I will admit that I'm among those men, and there are many, that cry during an emotional time. As young boys we are conditioned to repress our emotion because it's not manly. When I was very young my father would spank me and with every swat, I would hear "Hush" because I was crying. I never understood why he was saying hush, until in his latter days admitted he had always been emotional and would cry during emotional times. He did not want me to be a crier like he was. In spite of all the conditioning I find I tear up at emotional times. I would probable blubber like McMurray if I won Daytona. I have known men that pride themselves for never crying. I really feel sorry for them because they are so repressed they also have a hard time being intimate. I find the older I get the more I realize that it is not unmanly to cry.

In the same vain I was always taught men do not embrace (hug) when greeting or saying good bye, they only shake hands. I ran away from home at 17 because of a conflict with my father, who never showed any emotion toward me. When we reconciled when I was 22 I hugged him and continued that practice until his death when I was 42. I taught my son that embracing another man is not unmanly. In my old age I realize those emotions that were repressed did more damage than good.

We used to have a 1/3 mile track where Ron Hornaday used to race-Saugus Speedway.

I was into Off Road Racing-Jimmie Johnson sound familiar?-and started to go to SS just to see people go in circles!!

THAT is what started me to appreciate asphalt racing. Especially when the BIG shows would come to town.

Before they started the truck series, NASCAR put on a exhibition tour to see how well people would accept truck racing....

P.J. Jones and two other drivers did the race. Jones stuffed his ride into the fence, backwards, almost in front of us. He drove away with the bed of the truck pushed in to almost the back axle! I really got hooked after that.

I was in Winston-Salem last fall. Wish I had known about it then...mighta caught Bad Brad's radio show. Oh well :)

I don't have a favorite there...I just like seeing them fight and jump up and down on each other's cars! Crazy stuff

I also love the fact that there are cops/security people escorting the drivers around.

I have to laugh at this! After college football games in the east,I would see cops walking the coaches out to midfield to shake hands.....They all take sports very seriously!:D

I hate the COT..

I literally have goose bumps as I type this. That was one of the scariest crashes I had seen. The first look of the roof made me think of the worst scenario.

The "three start/finish rule" is going to cause more people to wipe out and change the results of races.

Totally agree. I would guess that is not at all what Carl had in mind when he put the bumper on him, but Krasklowski had it coming. He wrecks people every week, in every series he races in. Giving it back is the only chance that maybe something will sink into that thick skull that wrecking people isn't the only way to get it done. I just hope Carl doesn't get suspended for it.

Yep Amy I think your right.

Even though Carl is by far not my favorite driver, I don't think for one minute that he meant for that car to end up like it did.

But I must admit, it is payback for what he's done. Even though I CAN'T STAND Brad, I'm glad he's OK.

I was highly disappointed that they black flagged Carl. It was a bunch of BS, in my opinion of course.

Too bad Casey couldn't have won. Just can't stand that Kurt Bush:rolleyes:

Edwards gets 3 race probation.

I am surprised but pleased with NASCAR's ruling. They are taking the fact that the car got airborn more serious then Carl spinning Brad out.

I hope Brad heard the message loud and clear. Drivers aren't going to take his crap anymore.ANd NASCAr is letting them settle it on the track.

Edwards gets probation, Keselowski gets nothing.

Keselowski should have been parked last year, and should still have his ticket pulled. He has no idea how to drive in the pack, regardless of the track. I think his crew chief should tell him to hit the pace car, that way he can really hit everything on the track.

I went to Talledega for the Test this last Tuesday. It looked like business as
usually with a lot of drafting. Denny Hamlin and Dale Jr did a lot
of drafting hooked up the whole track. When those 2 hooked up they ran off and
left every one, even the rest of the Hendricks team drafting.

I was disappointed that the only RPM driver that was there was Paul Menard. I
guess daddy paid for him to go test. It will put the rest of the team at a disadvantage to not have tested there.

One of the complaints of the old wing is that it cut down on visibility. The new
spoiler is so big, from a visibility standpoint, this is a step backwards.

I do think it may have helped some with side drafting, because I say several drivers hanging with the pack even though they were alone with only cars beside them.

Anna, I listened to part of the race on Sirius, but got home in time to see the last 100 laps or so, so I missed Kurt's comment. Love it!! Course it was about the time I finally cracked open a Schlitz that Tony moved from 9 to 2. Might have been Darien's pit stratgey, but I'm just saying....

Richard, I never did find a replay of last week's Madhouse. I did DVR last night's though so reading your comments, I am looking forward to watching it!!

So Happy Justin got his first win in the Nationwide race. How much you think The Captain was in Brad's ear saying you had beeter not dump your teammate?!? As for Happy Harvick....I have to agree with Carl. I don't think he is nice person. Not saying he shouldn't have used the bumper to move Joey at the end for poisition....just saying he could have done it without flat our wrecking him. I really like Joey, but he is going to have to start giving some back, or people are going to keep driving through him. Don't want to turn out like Brad, but there has to be a happy medium between the two!

Thank God both Larry Pearson and the other driver (his name is escaping me at the moment) are both okay after the accident in the legend's race. Fun to watch, up until that point. I have to say though, before the race, when they showed Harry Gant in the car, open face helmet and no gloves I had a bad feeling...if they are going to contuinue witha that race, I think they need to add some of the more modern safety features.

I was under the impression that the D4C was a bonus incentive for Nationwide-only drivers. Now I see it's also some way to reward Cup drivers who run the whole NW season. This infuriates me. It's bad enough we have Cup drivers winning NW races, now they're getting extra incentives to win at stand-alone tracks. This is what I will miss most about Memphis: most Cuppers didn't bother with running it, and we got a chance to see some new guys on the track.

In most competitive sports, Cycling being one, once you move up to the next level you can no longer compete at a lower level. I think that is how it should be with Nascar. I think Nascar is afraid of making that a rule because they fear losing a fan base that come because of the Cup drivers. I compare that to allowing a Pro football/basketball player to go back and play for his old college team when it fits his fancy. I look at it as a progression from the Small tracks to ARCA to Nationwide to Cup. It isn't really fair for the guys coming up to have one of the spots taken by a guy that has moved up to the next level. IMO

The motorcycle museum sounds like a bucket list entry.

WOW.

The museum is unreal. It is a 4 story building but there are no stairs. it is like a spiral ramp that goes up 4 stories and the slop is so gradual you don't feel like you are going up. It is like walking through the history of 2 wheeled travel. His collection is so big he has to rotated what he is showing to about 800 at a time. It is the largest an probably the best motorcycle Museum in the world. The whole Barber Motorsport complex is world class. I spent the day out there today and watched everyone practice. I have been going out to races since it opened and the sight of all the Indycar and GT/GP cars all at one venue is a little overwhelming. Tomorrow is the GT/GP races and Sunday is the IndyCar. Patrick Dempsey is one of the GT drivers and of course we will have Danica racing on Sunday.

I was pulling so hard for Kyle to hold off Jimmie, cause I didn't think Ryan could get there. Then the caution came out and it was on! Congrats to Ryan and all of SHR!!! Here's the question....

You are a driver and you can pick any sponsors and colors and number for your ride.

What do you do?

I love the Petty Blue - but cannot stand him...

6 is my fave number

And I always thought seeing the TIDE car was funny....Granny used that as washing soap...:)

Sad story.

I have to wonder if they used Hans devices? I trust the ride alongs in a stock car...they are designed for it....roll cage, proper safety equipment. Not sure about a street car though. Do they change the camber in those to fit the track?

#7 was always my number growing up, and I love the Home Depot Orange, thought the NW version of the Old Spice car Tony used to run was a great color too. As for a sponsor? I'm thinking Pizza and beer. What goes better with racing then that?

The announcer is talking about how close the racing is on a 'road' course and how the racing is rubbing factor comes into play...

Mark was just thrilled that Johnson wiped out, and I'm thrilled that Clint Bowyer didn't win!

It wasn't a great night for Tony or Joey, but at least they were in the top 15.
And Denny, he finished 18th and on the lead lap. Better than I thought it was going to be (thanks again Jimmie:mad: )

I had picked Kurt and Kyle 1st and 3rd, I just had them in the opposite order.

Tony ran better then he finished, Ryan finshed better then he ran. (Thanks for the Ryan mentioned, Anna!) At least one of the SHR cars is back in the Top 12! Now we just gotta get the boss there. More ppl between here and there 16th vs. 14th), but he is 10 points closer then he was going into last night. If he wants to wait 2 weeks to get that first win of he season at MIS, I'd be great that!

Congrats Denny, Kyle, Tony, 1-2-3. Sure wish Kevicn hadn't wrecked Joey (again!) so that Tony would have been 2nd and Joey in the Top 5.

Joey needed to go talk to Kevin. He gets pushed around too much and it is usually either Harvick or Biffle on the other end. If he doesn't start standing up to them, they will keep doing it. His dad needs to stay out of. Tom Logano needs to let his kid fight is own battle. If he can't do that, he doesn't belong on Pit Road. And as funny as the DeLana comment was, bringing the wife into it, when your daddy is the one pushing people around, not cool. The rain delay worked out nice for me...I had 2 softball games and missed the first 1/2 of the race. Came home, turned it on while I did dishes, folded laundry, started dinner. By the time I was ready to really sit down and watch, there was about 30 or 40 laps to go.
