I have owned many types of dogs and I have to say the best dog I had was a very calm Cocker Spaniel. She is gone now and we have two Golden Retrievers, which I adore!! They are still considered puppies at one year old so I know they will be every bit as delightful as the cocker when they get a little older. Right now they are like babies and have to have a lot of attention, plus a lot of discipline! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/eek.gif But we think they are wonderful pets.

I have a wonderful Papillon named Pricess Sophia CD. The "CD" is an obedience title for those of you who are not familiar: it's kind of like a bachelor's degree for dogs. To see pictures, visit by clicking on the link:"My Girl Sophie" (http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=253143&a=1881713) She is a marvelous, loyal, lively, social, and obedient companion!

We have 2 black labs - actually one is blk lab & golden retreiver mix. She is the sweetest, most loving of the two. She readily accepts other animals & people & is extremely intelligent - - while the other Lab is less trusting, more bullying to others and sort of dopey(altho to us and our other pets she is very loving)!

I have 2 dogs, an Australian Shepherd mix named Graham whom I have had the pleasure of having in my life for 6 years now, and a pug dog that I adopted 3 weeks ago named Cassie. I would like to say that both dogs were adopted. Graham, the aussie mix, was from a small no-kill shelter located in the upper peninsula of MI, while Cassie was given to me from a coworker of mine who had her for 7 years and never had time to spend with her. She was real unhappy until she came to live with me. I would like to tell you about my sweet aussie mix,Graham, he was so severely abused as a pup before I met and adopted him. He must have been housetrained by the devil because not only would he NOT go potty in the house, but he would not go potty AT ALL! With all the attempts I tried to get him to potty it was 2 days of owning him that he finally "exploded" (outside thankfully because 2 days of not going to the bathroom make for a rather big mess) then ran away from me crying. It brings tears to my eyes picturing how someone could have harmed this exceptional dog in any way. He has NEVER done anything wrong in 6 years, he has excelled in obedience and agility, in fact, he got best in class (1st place ribbon)in every obedience class. He's flawless. He's perfect. Someone beat my poor boy. He still has signs of being abused, like I can't take the newspaper out of the plastic bag without him fearfully walking out of the room, and any quick movement of anyones' hands around him make him go into that "submissive dog cower". Since obedience his self-esteem and confidence has gone up a considerable amount, but I will always know that someone beat him. I wish the people who did this to my friend would get an idea of how it feels. As for Cassie, the new little pug, she's a little doll face! I am still learning her little ways, but she, also, is flawless. Her past owners loved her and wanted to keep her but they were away way too long during the day and Cassie was sad and lonely. Her cute little curly tail would lay flat due to depression. She's had the best 3 weeks of her whole life with me and with my other family members.

I could go on forever when I get started on the subject of dogs, but I would have to say, the best dog, in my eyes, is a dog who's life was less then what they deserved before they met you. There are certain breeds of dogs that I have a weak spot for, but I am delighted by knowing I saved a life. As much as I love German imported GSD's and Bernese Mountain Dogs, I can't see myself ever owning one unless I am able to save them. It's a different feeling knowing that you gave a wonderful home to a dog who had little happiness left in it's life.

Adoremydogs,
How wonderful of you to adopt your furbabies.
I know what you mean about the scars of past abuse showing up. I have two rescued GSDs. The first came to me at 69lbs. and with a skin condition. With lots of love and vet care, he is 110lbs. with a beautiful, healthy coat. My second rescuee was beaten. All you have to do is raise your hand and she tries to bury her head in the floor. If you even say, "Who did this?" she also tries to bury her head. Both my dogs are wonderful. They very rarely do anything wrong and at that it would be something so minor. They both seem to know that we rescued them and really appreciate it. What a shame it would have been to have either of these two darlings killed.

I own, or rather, they own me, 2 dogs, Jake, a beautiful RED dobie, and Lucy, a little hairball Rottweiler. Jake is about 14 months, and about 90 lbs. I just got Lucy, and she is a massive 10 lbs. I like just about all breeds of dogs, but prefer BIG dogs. To me, little yappin' ankle biters are not of much use, but its what makes you happy, right?! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif
They play together pretty good, or as best as they can, but Jake wasn't too sure when I first brought Lucy home. The only thing Jake doesn't like is when Lucy is after his biscuit. All in all, I love my dogs, and wouldn't trade them for anything. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

RebelOne: some years ago a friend had a birthday party for her Airdale,Duffy, and I made a cake for all the dogs with several cans of dog food, shaped like a cake, and covered it with chopped boiled eggs. Needless to say, the 9 invited dogs loved it.
My dog is a wonderful 7 years old Golden Retriever named Carina,July 13,2000 Dog of the Day. She was a puppy when we went to Duffy's birthday party and was very embarrased by having to wear a party hat, but, being the lady she is, instead of taking the hat off she came to hide behind me.

I have two wonderful long haired dachshunds. Barahona was my first, she will be 9 years old in December. She's seen me through college, 4 moves, one broken marriage and now my current marriage and growing family of human children:-) She is a black and tan with a lovely coat. Barahona is my "old soul" dog. There is an amazing strength and dignity about her, yet if she sees a child, all dignity is forgotten and she buries her face in their lap for pats and ear scratches. Last winter we almost lost her to a complication following a bladder stone surgery. After finding a new vet, undergoing a 3 hour operation to remove half her bladder, and a LONG recovery, she is back to her old self and almost none the worse for wear.
Blue is a 6 year old dapple. She is my "clown" dog. There is no dignity with Blue! She lives life with an enviable gusto and unfailing happiness. She knows when you need a hug and a face-washing, and even if you dont, you'll get a few a day. She is as bouncy as a 6 month old puppy, and is one of those dogs that sleeps on her back with all legs splayed, and smiles by showing her toothy grin.
I LOVE my doxies!!

I have three Dobies. I have the best of all the worlds as I have elderly, middle aged and puppy. My dobes are wonderful. Shannon the elder and wisest is 12 she has been resurected from the grave twice now through accupuncture and homeopathy. She is the best dog in the world and should be the embassador to the doberman breed. She is a pet therapist, has achieved a CDX tittle for obedience and is my very best friend.
V.C. is 6 and is a rescue and newly aquired family member. He is HUGE! 120lbs all muscle he looks more like a dane then a dobe and he is red. He is a sweet boy he lets my three year old paint his nails. I call him the nanny as he babysits my daughter and the puppy. He is such a puppy himself at heart.
The Puppy, Abby, otherwise known as "sawdust head" because we wonder if god have her sawdust instead of brains. She is sweet and smart, but, oh so puppyish at 7 months. She has Von Willbrand's disease and Dry sockets. She is very accident prone too. Abby is teaching my daughter the art of picking up her toys or they will be chewed.

That is my dog family. They are so cool. I love them all and can't imagine a day without one of their doberman antics.

Hi Everyone! Love all your replys. I'm new to the forum and just love hearing everyone talk about how much they love THEIR dog! The stories are all so touching. I think we all can relate to that special love. And Karen, I hope you see this. The absolute LOVE OF MY LIFE was my precious Jingles, a yellow lab/golden mix that was just the best of two great breeds. I lost her two years ago this month and miss her so. Nothing can ever replace your first true love! I also have a shep/husky (x) named CODY! And now a new "baby" yellow lab named Star. (Labs never grow up!!) She was born almost to the minute that Jing crossed over to the Rainbow Bridge. She was given to me as a gift for that reason. We all believe the soul of Jing entered little Star's body at that moment. I named her Star because I think Jing sent down her spirit from heaven to be with me in another little vessel. At least I'de like to think so!

Your story is so coincidental. When our Kaycee had to be put to sleep due to a terrible battle with congestive heart failure, our precious Lilly was born the next day!!! I have four dogs; a St.Bernard, Bernese Mt. Dog, Boxer, and a Yorkie. They all live in the house with us, making even the largest house seem small! The Berner, Boxer, & Yorkie are all working obedience dogs. The Saint was a breed prospect that didn't pan out -- but he's a wonderful pet, and we couldn't give him up. Of the dogs, the Yorkie calls the shots, and makes all the "doggie" type decisions.

It's an interesting mix - Binkley, the youngest at age 3, still thinks he's a puppy, so he's very hyper. From the Beagle side we have the prey instinct, and from the Corgi side, we have the herding, so he wants to chase you til he catches you and nip at your heels. He can be a little dog aggressive, mostly when he has his Gentle Leader on. He hates that thing, but it's greatly civilized our walks. In pop culture terms, I'd have to say he reminds me of a Jim Carey character on "In Living Color." The one I'm thinking of is in a scene with a "serious" newscast going on and Jim is in the background doing crazy things to get on TV. "Hey, look at me, notice me!" That's Binkley! He's a clown who doesn't always know when to quit.

Mojo is 4, and we think he might have some Basset in him, because he's a total couch potato. He's also a little dog aggressive. For his pop culture reference, I'd say he's a cross between Benson from "Benson" and Darlene (the younger daughter) on "Rosanne." Sometimes he seems to be shaking his head at how silly we are the way Benson did with his dingy boss, and sometimes I think he goes out of his way to be crabby, especially when Binkley/Jim Carey is acting out.

They both came from no-kill shelters. I have to laugh now, because I originally wanted a small toy dog, but I can't imagine my life without the Borgi Brigade in it! Mr. WendyK always wanted a Beagle, but his stepfather is allergic to everything with fur. I'd promised that he could pick whatever kind of critter he wanted, because I got to have dogs (Dachshunds) growing up and he didn't. When we went to the shelter in 1997, he and Mojo just clicked immediately. About a year ago, I was surfing Corgi links to find out more about the breed, and landed on petfinder.com, which has links to critters in shelters, and landed on a picture of Binkley. His smile reminded me so much of Mojo that I just *had* to have him. And the rest is history!

I have three dogs, a mad flatcoated retriever puppy of 7 months,a naughty black lab of 2 and a rescue mongrol of 12.I do not understand why flat coats are not popular they are the sweetest breed, my puppy is 7 months and went into a obedience competion and came 3rd. My lab is very naughty and has not grown up. The only time she behaves is when she goes obedience training. I would like to say well done to all people who ever homed a rescue dog. My mongrol of 12 was thrown out on a busy motor way and left. Once we had had her for a few weeks she was perfect. She is excellent with children and other dogs although wary of men. She is the most perfect dog, I love her to bits and would like to say thank the rescue who gave her to me. I would also like to thank all the people who go to my training club for all their support, advise and help in qualifing my lab for the obedience at crufts. Most people did not believe she had done it.

Well actually she is two years old... not exactly a puppy anymore... but I refuse to admit that http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif She's the sweetest girl and makes friends with anyone or anything, she has even inspired a few of my friends to buy Bassets, one named Baby Daisy !

Well, as I have posted all over the place...we have 5 big poochies. Sox is Aussie/German Shepard mix, Tigger is a Husky/Pit mix, Shawna is an Aussie, Jazzy is a Great Dane, and George is some sort of a hound. All of them are great and have such distinct personalities.

And Shaianne enjoys being top dog!!

Hi, all; I'm Cinder, the lil' German Shepherd from Ohio. I was six months old and only weighed 34 pounds when Dad, he's my Two-legger, drove over 80 miles to the jail in Wheeling, WV, to 'dopt me. He saw my mug shot on the jail's web site thanks to my two Angel Mom volunteers who took my picture and then e-mailed Dad the photo. I'm alomost two now, and weigh a whopping 44 pounds and stand a mighty 22 inches on my tippy-toes. I look 'zactly like a big German Shepherd, but Doctor Mike, the two-legger in the white coat that put the zipper in my tummy, says he thinks maybe I got *mixed* with something small. Dad doesn't care since I've finally decided that it's fun to crawl up on his lap and help watch the TV box. Small is nice! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

I've been to 'bediance school with Dad. It was a lot of fun, but he often acted upset and cranky in class. The teacher always *grinned* when she watched us do our stuff in class. I had the most trouble walkin' backwards so's I could watch the mutt heelin' around the course behind us. He was a butt sniffer.

I gots a liddle brudder who lives with us at the house; he's called Boots, the Kat. Bad attitude when I first came home; he spent a lot of time up on the high places in the house. He always seemed to have a speech problem; everything he said was either a low growl or a hiss with a lot of cat spit mixed in. He's a lot more friendly now, but he still screams to Dad for help when we play box and wrestle. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/eek.gif I get away from Boots most days 'cause I go to *work* every day with Dad to help him fix 'lectronic stuff at our shop.

I am owned by 2 beautiful, sweet, wonderful Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Stanley and Lindy. Stanley is 9 years old, and Lindy is 7. They are the light of my life--absolute joys!! I have been the dog "mom" to other breeds, but none as sweet and loving as the Cavalier. I work as a vet tech and meet many loving dogs and cats, but it is always a joy to return home to my babies.

I am Mom to Jeffrey a 2 yr old basset/lab mix and Bandit a 2 year old pug. They are my boys. I always wanted a house full of kids, but now that I am single, I can't afford it. My dogs are the kids I don't have to pay college tuition for; much cheaper http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif Jeffrey is a total Goof! He's definitely more lab than basset. When he runs downstairs, he's always in such a rush, he tumbles down the last 3 or 4 steps. Bandit seems like the aristocrat. He just looks at him as if to say "How un-civilized!" When my 11 year old daughter Kelsey sings in her "Munchkin" voice, Bandit howls like crazy. If I'm eating Bandit begs like he's starving, but if it's something he doesn't like he turns his nose up and trots away. Jeffrey, on the other hand will eat anything! To get Kelsey up for school, all I have to say is "Jeffrey, wake up Kel." He runs to her room, jumps, and does a belly flop on her. Kel doesn't particularly care for it but I think it's hilarious! I had dogs growing up; Lucky who was the family pet and Camp (don't ask, I was only five when I named him), but had a cat (Mike the Cat passed on in '98) as an adult since I only lived in apartments. As soon as I moved into a house, I got Jeffrey, then 2 months later, Bandit. They are true treasures and I can't imagine life without them. Aaah, group hug!

My husband and I have a 6 yr old, female, Sable Sheltie and 2 cats. The sheltie is very very intelligent, we will play hide and seek with her toys and she finds them every time no matter where we hide them. She has full run of our house, she also sleeps with us at night. While we are asleep she will peer out the window, since our bed is next to it. She leaves snark marks on the glass from her nose pressing against the glass, we love our pets.

I see most of you love a larger dog and I am an avid lover of them too, in particular Goldens and Pinchers. But my heart goes out to the most wonderful dog in my opinion,,,the pomeranian. If breed right they are the most loveable,,,,and most clown like little dogs I have ever encountered in my years. Ha,,,gotta love em. Big dog attitude in a little body,,,,but this pedigree loves everyone and will invite strangers in for tea while I'm away!!!!!

Enjoy your babies!

My last 3 dogs have been lab mixs but Poms are one of the best for small dogs. I had one for a pet for 13 yrs. as I was growing up and it was a sweetheart! Minnesota people have good taste. (I don't think it shed all that bad either. Brushing was in order for sure.)

We own 2 shelties and a tibetan spaniel.
The female sheltie, Shelley, is a lovely red-sable colour. Danny, the male sheltie, is a tricolour & was a rescue. The tibetan spaniel is called Angel & she is a beautiful gold colour. She became an Australian Champion in the showring but was unable to have puppies. Her breeder retired her to live with us as a pet. Our 3 dogs are much loved.

I have an airedale mix, too! Her name is Ginger. She was a pound puppy. Her puppy class teacher thought she has German Shepherd in her, as she has stand-up ears. But she's very Airedale...has the terrier eyes and wiry hair. She's smart, sassy, playful, mischievous, &likes to hunt moles/gophers. She's been said to resemble Little Orphan Annie's dog! She's seven now. Sure love to see a pic of Monty. Black lab with Airedale sounds sooo cuuute!! Bet he has a beard, too!

I have a weimaraner cross (with I don't know what! Some people think she might be crossed with a border collie.) called Piper. She's full of energy and loves frisbee. I love her to bits. We adopted her from the RSPCA when she was 9 months old on May 17th, 08. I can't wait until I move out of home (another few years still...) so I can let her inside the house! Yes, she's an outside dog... Actually, I spend most of my free time outside with her!:p Sometimes I even sneak outside with a matress at night and sleep with her. Piper is so great...

Does anyone else have an outside dog that they just WISH could be allowed inside?

yes, my beagle. She used to stay inside with me untill after my fiance moved in. She started having trouble controling her bowls. She's getting kind of old. It wouldn't have been that big of a deal but her pee stinks soooo bad! lol. She's healthy other wise and has nothing wrong with her. I felt horrible putting her outside but she is much more active now and seems to enjoy it out there much more than I thought she would, plus she has the cats to keep her company. I've decided that it was a good decision because she seems to have alot more to do other than lay around all day like she did in the house. Plus she had the occasional deer leg she drags in... yeah, I know nasty huh? but, that's a beagle for you.

Belle - Female Bluetick Coonhound. Sweet as pie, dumb as a rock... Usually. LOL Nicknames for her are, 'Poo Poo', 'Poo-pah', 'the fat one' and 'Hannah's Nanny'. :) We got her from a rescue just in the nick of time. The rescue had to close shortly after we got her. Like all the dogs we have had or will have, their names come from some sort of hockey theme. Belle is named after The Bell Center, home ice for the Montreal Canadiens my wife's favorite hockey team.

Beezer - Male German Shorthaired Pointer/Greyhound mix. We got him from our local Humane Society. I think he was an abuse case or something because he was scared of his own shadow. We got him, hoping to possibly train him to be a pointing hunting dog. LOL NO way. He is a sweetie, but a WIMP. The first gunshot would scar him for life. Nicknames for him are, 'sneezy', 'sneeze mcbeeze', 'wimp dog' and 'the skinny one'. He is named after the nick name of my favorite goalie growing up, John Vanbiesbrouck.

I have a German Shepherd mix who is about 9-10 wks old that we got from a rescue. He is a parvo survivor and was on schedule for the gas chamber. (how disgusting). Most people are starting to think he's possibly mixed with Terrier. We just tell him he can grow up to be whatever he wants, he doesn't have to listen to them! hahah He is a lil' monster but is overall VERY well behaved. (surprisingly for his very young age) Already mostly potty trained, haven't had an accident in the house for a few days now. Went for a walk today and he actually did well on the leash! Learning how to sit, and actually sat everytime I told him to today.... let's see if he can do that tomorrow now.... :-D Now just waiting to see how big he's going to get.....

Ohh!! Nmorgan your puppy is so cute!
He's a very lucky boy to be a parvovirus survivor. Bless your heart for adopting him. What is his name?

I have 3 American Pit Bull Terriers and 1 APBT/Lab mix. I posted pics inthe breed section here, but they are all rotten, two have their CGC and TT, Penny is also a Parvo survivor, demodectic mange survivor and is currently struggling with epilepsy, Orion the pit/lab mix has a bad knee but is a great boy. :D
