One of the rarest breeds I've heard of is the xoloitxcuintli (I believe pronounced "sho-low-eets-queen-tlee"; xolos "sho-los"). See "Precious" from 17 Dec Dog of the Day.

The Leonberger is my #1 favorite rare breed. They were bred to resemble the look of (not personality of, thank goodness) a lion. I have been to a few rare breed shows only to see the Leonberger breed. They are absolutely gorgous dogs with extremely gentle natures. When I got my own place I intended on purchasing my first Leo but, decided against it because they seemed a bit stubborn for my liking. I enjoy a dog who's easy to train and wants to please me. I have seen only one dog outside of rare breed shows. I ended up deciding to get a German Import GSD as my next pooch because of their eagerness to please their owners. And Sophie's daddy will be happy to hear when I get ready for another toy breed it will be no other then a papillion, although neither the GSD or the papillion are rare breeds, so a bit out of subject but when I get started it's hard to stop me!!!

I love the Leonberger, too!! I had seen their pictures in a dog magazine and I did some research on them. I also attended a rare breed dog show and finally met them. They are magnificent. I've been owned by a stubborn Great Pyr before so I know what the Leonberger stubborness is like. However, since I've also been owned by GSDs (and still am), I've been spoiled by their (GSDs) willingness to learn and great devotion. So I do know that I will always have a GSD, but MAYBE I would get a Leonberger also.

Another rare breed is the Shiloh Shepherd @ www.shilohshepherd.com. (http://www.shilohshepherd.com.) It is bigger version of the old fashioned German Shepherd Dog. In 1962, Tina Barber started this line in the US. Her web page tells it all. I've also seen these dogs at a rare breed dog show and they were beautiful.

The Rarest breed i have ever heard of is the Tosa Inu. Iy is a Japanese fighting dog. They were once breed for fighting and entertainment.It is similar to the Mastiff. There is also the Dandie Dinmont terrior wich I dont know much about.

We own a tibetan spaniel which is probably uncommon rather that rare...the same might be said of the tibetan mastiff. One tibetan breed that is rare is the Tibetan Kyi Apso.

A couple of rare breeds that I love are Pharaoh Hounds, Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs and Catahoula Leopard Dogs. Check them out on the internet!

I know of a couple of rare breeds...

One is the Dogue de Bordeaux. Its not that rare but I love it. It is better known as the French Mastiff. You may have seen one in the movie Turner & Hooch (he plays hooch).
I also like Carolina Dogs (American dingoes). They are neat. Ever heard of the Polish Lowland Sheepdog? They are a herding breed (mainly to protect stock) and they kind of look like benji but mainly grey and white.

This is kinda a dumb question, but that new movie with David Arquette, "See Spot Run" (? I think?). What kind of dog is that? Is it a mixed breed???

Hi Sue,

I was seriously considering buying one before I moved out of my moms house. My mom told me that if I could buy one (they were on average $1500) and pay for the vet costs that I could get one. Not likely for a young teen, so I researched breeders, met parent dogs and chose a breeder. I had started to save my money and by the time I had enough saved for the pup, vet costs, and obedience training, I decided I did not think a Leo would fit into my lifestyle as well as I would have liked. First of all, they are water loving dogs to the extreme! They LIVE in the water and since I don't live on the water it would not have been as fun of a home as someone who lived on or walking distance from water. I wondered how they would like Michigan weather too. We have such extreme summers here, and they get hotter and more humid every year.

When I finally had a breeder picked out, I spent alot of time with her and her dogs and I noticed that they were gorgous and sweet, but they really seemed to lack intelligence. I went to a few training sessions with the breeder and her bitch, who was to be the mother of my future pup, and she was a stunning dog with a great, loving personality, but she was a slow learner. The other dogs picked up on the lessions alot sooner then her bitch did, and she was one of the best bred dogs, with one of the most highly reffered breeders that I could find. The breeder then told me that they usually, "don't get brains until they are about 2". My reason for wanting a leo in the first place was because I wanted a dog who was easy to train, and who was intelligent. It was then that I decided not to spend all my saved money on a leo. Funny, I did not know anything about GSD's when I had saved up enough $ for a leonberger, otherwise I would have gotten a well bred GSD pup instead! I ended up spending most of my dog money on books in college http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/frown.gif

I have been to about 6 rare breed shows and interviewed alot of breeders and met alot of dogs. Some of the leos were very nervous of people. I remember in the ring there was this pretty, young male going around the show ring and he was so afraid of all the spectators looking at him that his tail was tucked between his legs, he had fear in his eyes, and he was trying so hard to get closer to his owner, who was handleing him, that he kept making her trip! They were planning on breeding him that next year. I didn't think he was a good specimen of the breed, but that's something that people have to look out for! Leos are supposed to be more friendly and outgoing then he was.

My favorite breed of rare dogs are the Karilian bear dogs . They use them a lot here in Monyana to train the bears in the state parks to stay away from the public areas so that the parks department doesn't have to destroy any bears. There are a couple breeders here. I don't know a lot about them but have seen them work and WOW they are great and loveable to families. Corinna

Thanks very much for the info. I was also considering a Leo (to go with my GSDs), but from what you've told me, I think I would be comparing the Leo with my GSDs. I guess I'm spoiled by the GSD breed and nothing else will do! Thanks for your help! Nonetheless, Leos are beautiful!!!

Here our two breeds,thier not that rare,but they still are rare. The Shiba Inu,this is one of the most attractive little wolf dogs.playful,independant,small. The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever,which I (hopefully!)will soon be getting!personality of the Golden retriever,easy to train,and smaller!It's red,with usually a little white.It's an adorable,great hunting dog!

Just saw your post and had to reply. I live in Nova Scotia and definately know about the Toller. In fact, a neighbour of mine owns two and they have just had puppies (8 of them). They are so sweet. Two of the puppies are black and white, 1 is chocolate brown, 2 are golden and the other 3 are a mixture of colours. The parents are pure-breds and the mom is golden colour and the dad is red!! Hope you do get a Toller and bring a bit of Nova Scotia to the states! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/wink.gif

After a lot of research on Tollers, she decided they were a lovely breed. We're all looking forward to watching them grow up.

Dog Fancy Mag usually profiles these rare breed dogs every month. Most recently the Karilian Bear Dog and the Pharaoh Dog among others. Not rare, but I LOVE Newfies!!! Recently met a Great Pyr puppy..to die for!! I have my hands full with my good ole GR/Yellow Lab mix, Cody, who, in himself is a rare breed!!!! He's really somethin'!
