View Full Version : Your favorite free programs?
Im going to volunteer at one or more locale senior centers for computer help/work/troubleshooting. Im putting together a thumb drive with my favorite and helpful software/programs.
Ild like to know what free programs/software that make your PC and internet experience easier or more enjoyable?

AVG antivirus...although it MAY go to pay only soon
VLC Media player, plays every type of media file
Open Office. A big one, it has I think better functionality than MS office lol.
IrfanView, a free picture editor. Not quite photoshop but its darn good.
I switched my stepdads comp to Avast from AVG after AVG's last update.
VLC
Irfanveiw
OpenOffice
Are already on my list.

How does Avast perform out of curiosity?

Ive used it for 5 or 6 years, and I have never had a problem. Its pretty lightweight, updates daily, and its free.
It uses less resources then AVG.

I have used Avast for years and it stop things BEFORE it gets onto to your computer.. A alarm goes off to warn you a file or whatever is infected before you download it.. Done saved me a ton of times.. Nortons let them in when I had it, Avast slams the door in their face. It is the BEST anti virus I have used to date!
Here is a list of what I have on my Installer thumbdrive so far.
ABIword
Avast
CCLeaner
Chrome
Firefox
Gimp
Irfanview
Open Office
Opera
Thunderbird
VLC
Adobe reader
Java Runtime environment
Flash Player
Spybot S&D
Shockwave

Photofiltre - It's a very simple and good photo editor with some nice features built in there. :)

Blue, would you please tell me more about Avast and why you prefer it to AVG. I use AVG and am curious if it might be a good idea to switch. Thank you!

After that uninstall of AVG, I'll never recommend it again......besides, the popups to upgrade were getting too damned irritating.
