View Full Version : Anyone else who can't stomach Christmas commercials?

I saw a Kay's Jewelers commercial this morning while watching the news that I found particularly annoying. This lady is rocking her new baby, with a perfect Christmas scene in the background. Her husband says he just can't wait, and gives her a piece of gaudy jewelry. Then they proceed to have a sappy moment, and the commercial implies that giving expensive gifts = true happiness.

It's like retailers want you to believe that your life will be perfect if you can only find the right gift(s) to give. It makes me want to abstain from buying at all.

Some can be obnoxious, but even then, I'd much rather hear them, than the ads for erectile dysfunction (and the possible side effects). And in prime time no less. I feel sorry for the parents with children who see these commercials, and then the kids want an explanation. :(:p

Adverts drive me nuts all year round, not just at Christmas. :D They are particularly mushy, and of course, there are more of them at Christmas, but their object is always to convince you that your life is incomplete without their product.

Be strong! Hang on to your money. :p

This would be one of the many reasons I record all shows and watch them later so I can skip commercials. And if I do happen to watch live TV I usually get up and do something during commercials.
And on the radio when a commercial comes on that annoys me (like this annoying tooth fairy one for a local wireless phone company) I will switch to my CD for a minute.

I just put my holiday CD in my car. Trans-Siberian Orchestra. I rocked all the way to work. :D

I actually like christmas commercials for the most part... but I like christmas everything lol. BUT I DO HATE jewelry store commercials ALWAYS. What is that quote "I bet more kisses start with miller lite than with Kay" haha. It's like "here if you want your wife to love you you better spend the better part of a downpayment on a house on a big ugly ring instead. she'll LOVE that. it's ok if you have to live in your parents basement for another few years. at least she will have something sparkly" lol

Yes, the mute button, or "previous" do come in handy. There are some (the cavemen come to mind) I can't stomach and I'll hit any button available. We don't have DVR:eek:. I know, we're in the stone age.

Now, back to Christmas commercials specifically, I don't know, some are sweet. They, of course, push the materialistic side of Christmas for the most part but that's their point. I guess bottom line is I don't like or dislike them any more or less than regular ones.

oh see you are stuck in the stone age with my dad :p I remember when I went to visit him... I was watching something on TV and I wanted to see something again and wanted to rewind it. DOH... can't do that no DVR. UGH

yeah I think most commercials are annoying at best any time of year haha.

My personal favorite ones to hate are those ones that are tryign to sell you a product to make life easier like a paper cutter where you just slide this little piece that has a blade on it and they show people trying to cut paper with scissors and they are all over the place cutting heads off of people in photos cause they can't cut in a straight line. as IF it's that difficult lol. dont' get me wrong. I have a device like that and I love that I just slide the tab and the paper is cut... but PLEASE I learned how to cut in a straight line with safety scissors in the first grade LOL Like they just try to make you feel like an idiot "are you a moron? then you need THIS"

Makes me feel better knowing I wasn't the only one getting a pop up adver about Viagra...I just clicked everything off and started from scratch, first time I get one of those.
As for the Christmas songs and adverts I can take them for a while but they start so early now that I get fed up by the time Christmas rolls around. I'm pretty good at blocking things out if get fed up . I don't watch enough tv to get annoyed but I also take a break during commercials, that helps a lot.

I know what you mean. I rarely watch commercials, when they come on I'm changing to another channel till I know the commercial is over. I dislike commercials anytime. There are some Christmas and Thanksgiving commercials that I used to like. The point is I like Christmas at Christmas not a week after Halloween. I can remember there used to be an unwritten law that said no Christmas until after Thanksgiving. We have lost Thanksgiving thanks to the Greed of the merchants wanting to move Christmas up a little every year.We have some local radio stations that will soon start their Christmas music format until New Years. I say Bah Humbug to it all.

I saw a christmas commercial the day BEFORE halloween. LOL I couldn't believe it. I know everyone says christmas starts earlier and earlier every year and most of the time it just seems that way but this is the FIRST time I've seen christmas commercials before Halloween has even arrived. it's crazy

that being said... I likely will not be able to wait until thanksgiving to put up our christmas tree haha if it wouldn't be totally wierd I would probably leave it up all year round. it's just so pretty and I love looking at it :D

I'll play the devils advocate here and say that they wouldn't run ads or put out Christmas early etc if there weren't people that listen to the commercial and act on it. :p I do think that it stinks that there isn't a single venue of entertainment that doesn't have advertising. PBS used to be commercial free but now it's chock full!
I think the quick growth of the ipod and other non-advertising entertainment is very much tied to the lack of advertising.

Yeah, that would draw the customers.

LOLOLOLOL,

There was a commercial that used to tout the 'measure of love' for your woman.

Was it DeBeers, the diamond company?

A man should spend 6 months of his salary for an engagement ring.

----------------

I was given this nugget of wisdom years ago-

What are you going to do with a diamond when you need a meal? Water and Power payment? Rent?

Side track? The people who are telling you to buy gold in this business climate.

At least you can cut small pieces and eat that, It will sate your hunger and you can recycle them!;):eek:

-----------------

The commercials I love are the ones with the little snippets of the proposals on the ski slopes or in some far off locale.

Should the marriage fail? You'll never go skiing or to see the Eiffel Tower again, without thinking of the godless heathen your were with then.

I had a coworker who was married on Halloween. It was a costume wedding - a nice thought, she later lost her husband to cancer, so I wonder how that affected her life afterwards!

There is way too much emphasis on buying a stone for someone you love, and way to much emphasis on what women expect to get.

yeah all these stupid sappy jewelry commercials drive me nuts lol. I mean don't get me wrong... I am a HUGE sap but my idea of sap is not spending the down payment of a house on a piece of jewelry I am not going to wear anyway lol. Like right now there is one where this lady is up at 2 am with the baby and the hubby comes downstairs and says "I couldn't wait" and then gives her this giant ring. Uh... thanks but I'd rather you take a turn with the baby and let me get some sleep :D

I remember last year on Valentines day we saw someone up in a hot air balloon... oh yes FEbruary 14th and some whacko was up in a hot air balloon. it must have been FREEZING up there. and I said to Brian "You KNOW there is a proposal going on up there right now" Man I can think of much better ways to propose than in the middle of winter 100's of feet off the ground. I like winter but come ON haha.

but I do love that coke commercial too. it is so cute and I love that song. I actually do love the majority of christmas commercials. anything with the upbeat christmas carols... love em. there is one out right now... it's gotta be for computers or something I'm not even sure but this girl who is presumably away at college is webcaming with her mom and her mom is taking the laptop around the house to show her the decorations and then she goes outside and her daughter is there on the front step to surprise her. I like that one. It's sweet and THAT is a good christmas gift :D

Diamonique! Big bling - little money.

I was out shopping with my RBGF and we walked by a jewelry counter/store.
She stopped and told me she wanted to look at the earrings. Naturally, I went to the real diamonds and started to browse there.

She told me that she found a pair! I said I'd put money down on them and pick them up later. She got this weird look on her face and said, "down payment?" I said, 'Yes.'

She started to laugh because the pair (diamonique) she picked were about 30 bucks, they were huge honking stones but she didn't care. She told me later that she didn't mind that they were cheapos.....she knew I loved her anyway.:)

And not a bow in sight?:D

I read that some idiot rented a balloon to propose to his sweetie and he hid the ring in a camera case?

He dropped the package over some orchard and spent the next week, with a buddy, trying to find it. He eventually did, so I guess he got engaged after all!

I'm with you on the Christmas music - I love it and don't get tired of hearing it over and over. Sure beats rap!!! :p Commercials get real old real fast - for the most part anyway.

I wish the stores would hold off at least till Nov before they start pushing Christmas tho. Oct is just too darn early. I did notice around here however, that the stores seem a little slower getting their Christmas decorations and goods out this year. I was looking for Christmas cards a couple of weeks ago, and hardly any stores had any out.

The commercial that bugs the living poop out of me are the GAP/cheerleader commercials.

I swear, I will never shop at a Gap store again, just based on those stupid ads.

----------------

And while not a Christmas commercial?

http://www.dvbs.eu.org/video/cNkp4QF3we8/Family-Guy-Lois-Mom-Mum-Mommy.html

This one make me laugh like a moron when I see it.

-------------------------------------------

Here's the deal....
Men always are show as PW'ed gift givers in the commercials.

Yeah, she is all thankful now?

Wait until you hear the yelp from the bathroom when you leave the seat up.
Or,
"Are you going to sit there and watch football all day?"
"Are you stupid? I never have come close to hitting the mailbox."
" YOU tell your mom what she needs to bring!" ;)

I want truth in advertising.......my commercials will be based on the wrath of women..

It's the sure fire way to get a man to leave you alone during the holidays, because he didn't buy you the giant ring/diamond you wanted........

Gas or Electricity.

Buy him a gas powered anything.....chainsaw, generator, model airplane or car.

He'll spend a week or two playing with it. RRRRRRRRRRRR, RRRRRRRRRRR, RRRRRRRRRR.

DO NOT BUY A "One Use" Item....The more uses, the better.

A hedger is nice? A leaf blower better? Gas powered airplane will make him leave the house to play in the park.

Electricity?

That real nice all-in-one remote for him is cool, He'll spend two weekes trying to program all the codes in, only to find that the RCA remote has no code for the RCA DVD player.

A nice table saw is cool, Maybe he'll put up the shelves or try and make all the stuff he sees on the DIY channel. That will keep him in the garage for a while.

No stereo or TVs, He'll never leave the house and test you on how loud the Dolby 5.1 need to be to get your teapot collection dancing in the hutch, us men are like that.

-------------------------

And if you buy us underwear as gifts?

Tell us a huge lie like, "Don't worry, I don't expect you to sleep in them......"

Sorry, I got off topic....:)

I USED to love Christmas, back when it started in DECEMBER!

Now I'm getting nailed with Christmas songs/ads in the stores, on my fav. radio stations, and on tv before Halloween!!

Because they start so early, drag it out for so long, and the fact to me it isn't Christmas time when it's still 50 degrees outside, I'm sick of Christmas before it even gets here!! I rarely put up a tree anymore, I haven't sent cards in 2 years, and I never decorate the house anymore (actually sold most of the decorations a few years ago).

My only bright spot I could hear over and over and I hope they never end it...

This commercial has been all over the TV. I can't stand it! For radio the commercial tells you to give a lottery ticket to “…the pizza guy who pre-blots your pizza”, “the trainer you totally have a crush on” and the co-worker who turns on your computer when you're running late, so no one will know. In church yesterday our pastor joked about moving Christmas to February. I'd like to move Thanksgiving to when they observe it in Canada, mid-October.

For those who are curious however, the "rule of thumb" - established by the diamond industry - is that men should plan on spending about six months' salary when considering the purchase of diamond engagement rings.
