Dear Candace,
Speak out against the cat and dog fur trade

Speak out against the slaughter of dogs, cats, and seals for their fur.

Tell Minister Ritz to end support for these gruesome industries!

This awful scenario is a grim reality for too many of the millions of cats and dogs in Asia who are slaughtered for their fur. And the Canadian government contributes to the problem by refusing to close our borders to the skins that are products of this horror. We need to let the government know that Canadians do not condone this atrocity.

Canada could slam our doors on this cruel industry by banning our trade in cat and dog fur. The United States and the European Union—our largest trading partners—have already passed this legislation, saving countless cats and dogs from a terrible fate.

Yet, unbelievably, officials told Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz not to consider a cat and dog fur ban, saying it could undermine Canada’s "case" against nations that have prohibited seal product trade.

The fact is, leading trade law experts have repeatedly concluded that both prohibitions on cat and dog fur and bans on seal product trade are measures that can be justified under WTO Agreements. Moreover, polling shows 86 percent of Canadians supported the right of the EU to ban seal products.

In-depth investigations by HSI and others have revealed extreme suffering in both the production of cat and dog fur and the commercial seal hunt. There is a very good reason Canadians abhor the slaughter of cats, dogs, and seals for their fur.

TAKE ACTION

Please contact Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz (https://secure.humanesociety.org/site/Advocacy?pagename=homepage&page=UserAction&id=4233). Tell him that as a Canadian voter, and on behalf of what Canadians stand for, you demand he immediately work towards a ban on cat and dog fur trade. Please also let him know that you strongly oppose all attempts by the Canadian government to challenge nations that have banned seal product trade.

With your voice, we can save countless animals from unspeakable suffering. Thank you for all you do for animals.

Sincerely,
Rebecca Aldworth
