Do I have to remain "Registered User"

Go to USER CP (CONTROL PANEL)
then to EDIT YOUR DETAILS
then scroll down to CUSTOM USER TITLE

enter your wording and save changes.

Exactly as Jenn described. Once you have several posts under your belt, you're allowed to change your user title.
