Your favorite cat food...

I was wondering if everyone has 'settled' on what they consider the ultimate best food for their cats. I have a Himalayan with a SUPER-sensitive stomach that can only eat certain foods and have found that Orijen is an amazingly good food for my cat. I have to drive kind of far to a feed store to get it but it's worth it. I was using Nutro about a year ago which made my kitty really sick it seemed. But for anyone searching for a cat food with a kitty that has a sensitive stomach like mine, I highly recommend Orijen if you can find it in your town. Also my cat likes as a 'treat', Friskies 'special diet' turkey and giblets. I've tried other flavors but he pukes them up!

I've been feeding all of my cats a grain free diet and I feed them Innova Evo dry and some of them also get the 95% Chicken & Turkey canned food. They all love it and seem to be doing very well on it.:)

I started feeding them this food because my RB cat Starr had colitis/IBD. My cat Pearl was also diagnosed with Eosinophilic Granuloma Complex and in her this is caused by a food allergy.The Innova Evo has helped her to stay healthy and she hasn't had any more flare ups while eating this grain free food. When I tried a different grain free food though, she did break out again.

My cat Storm had PU surgery because he became blocked due to struvite crystals. He had been on Royal Canin Urinary S/O dry and canned food but he'd still get UTI's sometimes. Since he's been eating Innova Evo, he's been doing great and is much healthier than he was before.:) I highly recommend this brand of food.:)

The best, I wouldn't know. I feed them what they'll eat which is Purina Cat Chow and have never had any problems. When I've tried other brands, that's when the problems arise.

I also think the way a cat reacts to it's food has to do with the local water supply; the whole chemical reaction thing. When we were on a different water supply, our cats did fine on Cat Chow. When we moved to an area with a different water supply, we had to find a new food(finally settled on Iams). What really messed with our cats' digestive systems, was in the summers, and they kept changing the chemical ratios with new water shipments.

PS. Our cats have NEVER done well on Friskies:p

Smudge can't have grain, so right now he's getting Solid Gold's "Indigo Moon" dry food, which he loves. He also gets a little canned food as a vehicle for his supplements, but I switch around so he won't get bored. He seemed to really enjoy California Naturals' Salmon & Sweet Potato, but he also likes the local grocery store's brand of whitefish/tuna! I just read all the labels and make sure there's no grain in it.

I haven't really tasted any that I have fed my cats so I don't have a favorite. The beef and gravy from Friskies doesn't look or smell that bad though. :D

:D Yeah, Natural Balance Venison & Peas smells like something I mightn't object to on crackers, if it had a bit of garlic & salt added! But then I'm usually pretty hungry when I'm fixing Smudge's breakfast.

Wilderness is what my cats eat. I switched from Iams and what a difference. MooShoo used to weigh 18.9 lbs. This food is amazing!! MooShoo lost 2 lbs and his pouch has shrunk. It's all natural, a little on the expensive side. But my vet can't get over how nice and healthy and shiny their coats are. They don't eat half as much as they used to. I'd highly recommend it to anyone!

My cats won't eat the Wilderness foods, which surprised me. They love the Purina One for Urinary Tract Health. They will absolutely race each other to the bowl for that! Iams is big on their list, also. Friskies makes a Special Diet for Urinary Tracts canned food that my kitties love! Of course, Elegant Medleys are always a hit!

Weve always been partial to Friskies and Whiskas in our home, but sometimes I wonder if maybe we got the right food. Does anyone know of any good cat food- were thinking of taking in our neighbors cat when they move, and hes been raised on the cheap foods. Should we keep feeding him what they did, or should we feed him like we fed our cats? Any helpful tips would be appriciated. Thanks so much

Feed him what you feed your cats, unless he will not eat or has health issues. I have to feed cat food for urinary tract health that both of my cats will eat. They LOVE Purina One! If I took in a new cat, that is what I'd give him/her.

Pinot is a Science Diet Indoor kitty. She came from the shelter with it, and we stayed with it. For dinner we mix in a little of the Science Diet canned with the dry, but it's all Science Diet.

My favorite cat food??? - none - they all taste terrible. :eek: OK - bad joke - not funny!! :(

Seriously tho....my son's twin girls (indoor), and my resident stray (outdoor) Sherbie, all eat the same thing. During the day they have Purina Cat Chow or Meow Mix, and at night they get Fancy Feast or the new Meow Mix Market Select. They have no ill effects from eating what some consider as junk pet food, and unless issues develop and they have to be on a special diet, then this is what we will continue to feed them.

I agree with your comment on Friskies. When the girls were alive they were on Friskies and were so sick. That is what started me on my cat food odyssey almost 20 years ago.

Your water comment is right on. Right now there is more bleach in the water. I can tell by the reaction to my hair, eyes, and skin. It destroys the water filter. The cats now get bottled water or distilled water. Sam's stomatitus has all but disappeared.

As far as dry food for Sam, he eats either Innova in the red bag or VF by arkat. However, Sam is not the reason for premium cat food. Mr. Spunky will nibble on dry food and does not do well on the cheap stuff. It just makes him sick with kidney stones and vomiting.

The fellas get three foods: Fancy Feast canned for the vitamin content (Grilled versions only), raw rabbit from Nature's Variety, and cooked tilapia every day. The rabbit and tilapia are recent daily additions in the last few months. (There's a long story behind this.) I also supplement with taurine and some bone meal from time to time. Already Spunky has lost weight and is looking fit and I am hoping Sam will too soon.

They eat better than I do.

I don't know what's best. What's best is what you can get them to eat without making them sick.

I would like to buy different brands but I have to be sure the cats will eat them. I wish more makers wouold offer samples. I have only the two, but I get the dry food that the one with allergies can eat. The other one happens to like the Weight control formula of this brand, so that's the dry food that I feed.

Look at the ingredients. In my opinion, if it has corn or wheat, it is NOT healthy. The same goes for by-products of any meats. By-products can mean anything and any part of the animal. Purists won't even feed chicken meal (or any meat), but want real human grade food.

In the canned food, try to avoid wheat and corn glutens. Sadly, I feed mine canned food that has some gluten in it. They like the food and it doesn't make them sick.

You have to feed what they will eat within reason. If not, you are wasting food and frustrating yourself.

I also feed raw. It takes a while to get them to switch over, but eventually they will like it. I used it as a treat first, and now they expect some every day.

My opinion: Grains are not a natural part of a cat's diet. While they can eat some grains without harm, these are not meant to be a major part of their diet. Just my opinion.

Consider bottle water and make sure it's not from another town's water supply. Sam's gums are much healthier this way and I am sure some stomach problems can be caused by bleach or bacteria in the water.

I've tried so many different cat foods, trying to get one that won't upset 2 of my girls' stomachs.

Right now we're on Eagle Pack Holistic Duck and Oatmeal. It seems to be doing ok with all of my cats, so that makes me happy. It isn't cheap, but as long as they aren't throwing up, I'm a happy camper, and I'm sure they are as well.
