Last Monday, we took our annual trip to the zoo of Hannover, and it's been a very nice day (apart from the ending, but that's another story ).

I would like to share some of the pics with you, even though I'm not too happy with the results this time.

But here they are:

Well, last year, I got better ones, with lots of babies, and great close-ups... But I guess I shouldn't be too picky. :o

Thanks! :)

I'm already looking forward to our next year's visit. They're going to finish the Yukon Bay area in 2010, which should be interesting, and from what I read on their website, they're going to have three more baby elephants next year! Shanti, the baby elephant in one of my photos, was born in 2008, and when I saw him last year, he was only 6 days old, and he was so tiny! Meanwhile, he has grown a lot!

Here's the english version of their website btw: http://www.zoo-hannover.de (http://www.zoo-hannover.de/zoo-hannover/en/zoo_v3/tiere_attraktionen/tiere_attraktionen.html).

And here's some info on the elephant family (http://www.zoo-hannover.de/zoo-hannover/en/zoo_v3/tiere_attraktionen/zoo-welten/dschungelpalast/elefantenfamilie/elefantenfamilie.html).

Glad that you like the pics! :)

The hungry hippo cracked me up!

Oh, that one was too funny! There were several hippos in that basin, but this one was sooo greedy! It got all the food!

Mind if I use a couple as the desktop for my computer?

No problem! :)

I love how inquisitive that gorilla seems.

That was so interesting! There was a woman who obviously knew some of the apes very well, and who was able to actually communicate with them. When the pic of the gorilla was taken, he was just having a "talk" with that woman, and it's easy to see in his face that he was very focused on that conversation. I wonder what they were talking about! :)

Very nice pics! Very sharp and original. In a zoo, it's easy to take very standard pictures, but your pictures are interesting and say something, really!

As Siegmar said: what does it take to make her happy with her pics?;)
I love the monkey in front of the fresco and the little red monkey- or is he an ape- and of course I think the hippo is priceless. You should send them to the zoo and ask whether you can get a free annual ticket for them ;)

By the way, this reminds me of an experience I had not long ago.

I was taking a lonely stroll through the woods of Willow Oak, and I heard a strange noise. I was startled to see a very small fawn, which still had its spots. I stood still and looked around figuring on seeing the mother somewhere nearby. The fawn had seen me and was standing very still. A few moments passed until I heard another noise. I don't know how to describe it really, but it was sort of like a rough snort. I turned to see what apparently was the mother. I was squarely between mother and baby. So ..., slowly and carefully I backed away from the scene.

Ah, such is life at Willow oak. I make the payments on the place, which apparently is actually owned by others.

Hi Kirsten,
In your hands a camera produces art. Each picture is nothing short of breath taking. I love the one showing someone's paw. It looks like a very beautiful and well maintained zoo and the animals look well cared for.

Your pictures really make me want to go there. Have you considered showing the management the pictures for a possible promotional booklet? I'd love to see you get the recognition you deserve for your extraordinary photography.

Willow Oak, what a wonderful encounter! That must have been a really special moment!

Thanks, momcat! :) Yes, it's true, it's a beautiful zoo and the animals look healthy and well cared for; and many of them have enclosures that resemble their natural habitats. However, not everything's perfect (but can a zoo ever be perfect for animals?), but they're working on it, as it seems.
