Picked up another hermit crab tonight while Andy and I were on our lunch break.

I've been wanting a 'Strawberry Hermit' (http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=strawberry+hermit+crab&gbv=2&aq=0&oq=strawberry+her) for a very long time and since we had some time to kill after our meal, Andy and I popped into Petco "just to look".

I asked if they had any Straws in and she wasn't positive but the employee happily dug around and she found one left!

S/he is so little!

Well little compared to the baseball sized Straws I've seen in other stores out of state. Finding them in MI is hard, so I snatched it up.

S/he's chillin in a box at my desk right now. I wish I had my camera. Not shy at all, so I should be able to snap some pics tonight or tomorrow.

EDIT:

Here's "Berry Sweet" (temp until I can think of something fitting):

Congratulations, maybe you should name her June, as that's Strawberry season! ;)

LOL! I know. I was able to keep an even number for a week. :D

Well... there's always the Viola (http://secure.cartsvr.net/catalogs/catalog.asp?prodid=5130337&showprevnext=1) variety, but they can be pricey. :o ;)

They have always given me the willies, but I'm still very fascinated by them. I saw a bunch of them drowned at the local pet stores and it scarred me for life. They are still very interesting creatures. I love the strawberry color. It's very striking. How many different varieties are there?

Kim took some pics today outside, since the Strawberry switched shells last night. We removed the original shell, since we only use natural looking shells, not the kiddie painted ones. Here's the pics!!!

She is very pretty! Puts me in mind of a tiny lobster. :D
(I have always secretly wanted a pet lobster...)
Its nice to see that you only use natural shells. I am not very knowledgeable in the field of hermits, but I am an advocate of keeping captive animals' habitats and such as close to natural as possible.

Thanks all! I much prefer the look of the natural shells to the painted.

I think painted shells came about as a way for vendors and pet stores to charge more.

If not done right, the paint can chip, the hermits might eat the paint chips and then get very sick. Just not worth the risk to me.

How many different varieties are there?
Seven that I know of. :)

I love their eyes lol. Do they pinch a lot? I think I'd be scared to hold one lol.

They can pinch, but I try not to give them a reason too. Sokka is a notorious pincher, so I don't hold him very often.

Berry Sweet is just that.... very sweet. She uses her legs to grip my hands and fingers when I hold her. Not a single pinch yet. :D
