Ohio man arrested for mowing unkempt grass at park

Published - May 29 2009 04:54PM EDT

An Ohio man arrested for mowing unkempt grass at a public park said he just wanted to make his city look nice. John Hamilton said he took control of the situation because the grass in Sandusky's Central Park was about a foot high. According to a police report, a witness said Hamilton was blowing grass onto the sidewalk and shredding trash in the park that had not been picked up.

Police said they arrested 48-year-old Hamilton after he refused to stop mowing and charged him with obstructing official business and disorderly conduct.

City Manager Matt Kline called the arrest unfortunate and said he understands Hamilton's frustration. Kline said budget cuts have left Sandusky understaffed for seasonal maintenance work.

Yes, lets arrest a man mowing grass at a city park instead of fighting more dangerous crime on the streets.

said he just wanted to make his city look nice...

Over the years I've mowed an awful lotta grass that wasn't really "mine"
in the interest of neighborhood beautification.
THIRTY years ago I started to venture up & down my rural road to whack down the
unmowed jungle between the road and the ditch - the side of the ditch
that none of the neighbors bothered to mow. After a few years, I had "grass" growing
and some of the folks actually mowing their own ditch every week. :)

My only run-in with the Law was years ago ... springtime and the grass was
WAY high and always too wet to mow. We had a dry spell so OddJob (my Japanese
noisy Diesel) tractor and Woody (the trail-behind mower) were working
late (REAL LATE - like 12:30 - 1:00 AM) to mow the foot-high grass ...
OddJob tends to make a LOTTA *racket* when he's workin hard (two-cylinder Diesels
are known to be a tad bit "noisy"!)

We were blasting our way around the pond - putting OddJob about 100 feet from
the neighbor's house on every pass ... when the headlights appeared in my driveway.
We roared around the pond and I recognized the Sheriff's Car behind the headlights.

Uhhhhh-Ohhhhhhh ...
He was nice - but 'suggested' it might be time to quit in the interest of
neighborhood peace and tranquility. We called it a night.

Out here they send the helicopter first to make MORE noise, then the coppers show up.

Just don't show up on COPS, O.K.?:o:(

Phred, when I read the article, the first person that came to mind
was you. You have always been the "get er done" type guy at all the
gatherings.:)
