View Full Version : Redecorated my room last weekend! (update #36: new colors for the "kitty room"!)

I was getting so tired of the colors here in my apartment, and I felt it's really time for something new. After painting my corridor in January, I now decided to redecorate my bedroom. This is also the room where my computer table is, which means that I'm spending a lot of time there - and so do the girls!

I was really really tired of the yellowish and reddish walls, and the blue carpet and curtains. I did a lot of soul-searching until I finally came up with an idea for a new color scheme: chocolate, nougat, cream and pistachio-green. The idea was that I wanted to make my old black furniture "disappear" in front of the dark walls - and I think it works, their ugliness is less obvious now.

And for some reason - despite of the dark colors - the room looks much bigger now! I like the result a lot, and so do the girls, as it seems. *g*

You did a terrific job!
I should hire you to come do my home. :)

But then you'd have 3 totally different looking kitties and 2 doggies to match. LOL

Yes, everyone I told about my plans said the room would look too dark, but once they saw the result, they agreed it's looking nice. :)

That's a tough job indeed! ;) Was probably much easier with two tabbies! LOL

These are interesting colors! Indeed, they match well with the furnitures. We are also redecorating our house and I know how difficult it is to choose a color.

I love the tabby decorations too :D

It is quite beautiful!
I have a painting question. How do you manage it without "helpers"? I really want to do some painting but I can't imagine doing it without kitty paw prints across the carpet?:rolleyes:
Also, what kind of paint do you use? I'm afraid of the fumes and what it might do to the boys? It's been a long time since I painted so I suppose they've developed paint that is "green"/eco friendly?

That is beautiful.. just striking! What a fantastic job you have done.

I especially like all the cat decorations .. two-dimensional AND three-dimensional.

I wish you could come and redecorate my apartment!

Gesh, I've been trying to pick out colors for a few years with no luck. You did an excellent, gorgeous job! I LOVE the colors! Your apartment is really lovely. And the kitties seem to agree!

Your bedroom turned out great and your cats sure do make wonderful art pieces too.:)
Do you have to keep your cats out of the room while you're painting it or are they good cats that will just sit there and watch you?

Wow Kirsten- you really have artistic skills- it's kind of an African style now and I think it looks very cool. Isn't it funny with design- it wears out, just like fashion does and then you have to go back and start new.

FANTASTIC Kirsten!! I love that deep brown colour!!

A few weeks ago I renewed our furniture & curtains too! Both are dark brown too! My hubby thought it would be to dark too; but now he loves it as much as I do :);)

Well, re. my "helpers"... Luna couldn't care less, she spent the entire weekend on the top of the closet in the kitties' room, she didn't want to have anything to do with the mess. Lily tried to help at first, she was so excited and ran up and down the place. But after a while, she disappeared in the living room and wasn't seen before all the work was done. :)

Also, what kind of paint do you use? I'm afraid of the fumes and what it might do to the boys? It's been a long time since I painted so I suppose they've developed paint that is "green"/eco friendly?

Well, even though my paint wasn't labelled as "eco", I choose one that barely smells. The kitties and I didn't have any problem with it. It's been a high quality paint and they mixed the colors I chose at the store.
To be honest, I'm more concerned about the new carpet, as there's still a strong smell coming from it. Hope it's nothing that's doing any harm to the girls when they walk on it and lick their paws.

Wow your room looks awesome! I love the mix of colors... That room has good walls to do multiple colors on like that. And all of your accessories look great with the colors too.

Good to hear you stuck to your idea with the darker color. Some people are just afraid of color. Our master bedroom is charcoal.. And I love it! People's mouths hit the floor when I mention it and I just smile. There's no white rooms in our house! I've painted every one of them!

That is true! Most people I know chose only light colors for their walls, and often enough, it looks boring. I saw a charcoal colored wallpaper at the do-it-yourself-store the other day, and actually it looked cool. Combined with interesting deco elements, it's simply stunning!

Our room is Charcoal walls, with a 6 inch white [paint] border around the top. Dark red curtains, bedding, black furniture, a red upholstered chair and red knick knacks. I think it looks really rich and comfortable. And the carpet is white, so that makes it look not soo dark and dreary. Hopefully some day we can replace the OLD white plush -yuck!- carpet and then replace the baseboards with nicely painted white ones. That would really finish off the room.

I looked through your pics again... I really like the different colors on the walls. I wish I had a room with different angels like that to do it in.. all our rooms are simple 4 wall rooms.

Do you have pics of the charcoal room? I am interested to see it. I am among the persons who prefer very light colors, and I don't dare having too strong or dark colors. But I am searching new ideas too.

Not trying to hijack the thread... But since Sonia59 asked, here's two pics of our master bedroom.
Looks like my lens is a little dirty, so disregard the water spots... Must have gotten sprayed while in the frog room.

The ceiling fan light seems to have made the quilt look kind of orangy-bittersweet colored, but its really red. Just had to have that light on because its dark and rainy here today.

I highly recommend painting rooms a rich [darker than you'd think...] color. Our kitchen and office are a medium-dark green, our extra bathroom is chocolate brown, & other bath is a dark golden color. I just finished painting my mom's master a dark olive green and she LOVES it. It's just paint.. so it can always be redone! =)

WOW is all i can say Kirsten, i love the colours you have chosen, they look wonderful, when you wrote them down i had could image something yummy to eat, being a chocoholic, never far from my mind lol, and the fur accessories, well what can one say BEAUTIFUL, thanks for sharing and enjoy your new decor.:)

Speaking of dark colours i too have light colours ,it is not that i don't like dark ones just not daring enough, however our daughter choose a nice dark rich red for her very small bedroom., i really was not keen, it had been a light yellowish cream, and the results are great, along with black curtains and a red and black chinese print duvet, and with white skirting boards and a wood ceiling it looks really good.

I agree.. It might be too much for a living room. It really depends on the size of the room and the amount of light it gets. We have an 8 ft all glass sliding door, so it gets a lot of light in the bedroom, even with the curtains closed. Accessories help too.. =)

Exactly. This is what I thought when I saw your sliding door behind the curtain.
It's the same for Kirsten's room I think. From what I see on the pictures, it looks naturally very lighty, you have big windows, isn't it Kirsten?

Okay, I spent the last three days painting my kitchen. I've never been very happy with my kitchen, all these strange angles, and the ugly hot water tank... Anyway, I tried to give the room a fresh, modern look with the colors I have chosen.

This is what it's looking like now:

Your kitchen is so CUTE!! I love the stencil art you did, that POPs it out at you and draws your eyes towards that area. It really does look NICE! You should be proud of the job you did! You are talented with more than that camera!

Love the green! and I love the pics of Lily exploring the kitchen. My kitties have never gotten on top of the doors like that, I'm surprised Owen doesn't do that. :)

Well, okay... I spent Ascension Day painting the kitty room! I choose a very unusual color this time, dark berry, and for some reason, painting was very annoying this time as the color didn't have a good adherence to the wall. Had to paint three times, and it took me all day.

Luna and Lily seem to like the result. Especially in the late afternoon, when the sun is shining into the room, it's looking very nice and cosy. The room is called "kitty room" because they're having their food bowls there, and their scratching post. They also have a bed on the top of the cabinet, where they love to sleep, and Luna loves her place on the old wooden chest when the sun is shining onto it. Since I have no other use for that room, it's called "the kitty room". :) But of course they are also using the other rooms here as well.

This is what the new room looking like:

The funny thing is... First I thought I would have to get rid of the orange cushions, and curtain, but now that I see it in combination with the new wall color, I think it's actually looking good together. ;)

It looks great Kirsten... although I would never choose such a dark color for a whole room. ;) The color suits Luna and Lily very well! :D

A tip - if it's hard to cover the paint under the one you're using, paint with a beige the first time.

Looks great! I too like the orange/purple combo. The decals you put up look neat. I've had a harder time with some paints too... I painted my room at my mom's house a darker red (with an orange 6 inch strip around the room, about head height) and I had to do 3 coats to get it an even color. And I was painting over a pinkish mauve... so I thought it'd be easier to get even. Sure is annoying to have to paint the same walls so many times. =) Looks really good though!!

I love that colour, and how the orange works so well with it.:)
