Well over this past week Hermes has been having this scratch mark on his head. Over the past 2 days it seemed to have gotten bigger and then this morning when I looked at it there was fresh blood and it looked pretty sore. I put some neosporon on it and I had a vet appt set up for him for Friday afternoon but I called them today to tell them it got bigger and I think he should be seen today if possible.

They were able to squeeze us in at 5:15 p.m. today and so now he had a cone over his head to let his head heal and she said we could probably take the cone off on Sunday but if he starts scratching again it has to go back on.

Poor guy really hates this cone though he's been having a really hard time dealing with it. He just lays around and tries to get it off. I really hope that he keeps it on and it's just a good thing Rob is off work tomorrow so that someone can watch him.

Well of course I had to attach a few pictures of my poor Little Man. Hopefully this will heal up in less than 10 days and it won't come back. She said if it does come back it could be allergies but I'm hoping it doesn't.

Awww, poor Hermes!! You still look adorable as ever though. And just learn to deal with the cone head because it's for your own good. Your meowmie would not put you through that if it wasn't. :)

Awww! Hermes, you look so miserable and unhappy. You can't scratch where it itches, can you? Give the meds time to work baby and maybe the itscing will stop.

Yes the vet gave us some antibotic because it's infected.

Hopefully it will heal up and won't come back because if it does come back after it heals then he might have allergies.

Allergies aren't always an insoluble problem. Sometimes a food change will clear it up. Food's a common source of allergens. I can't even give Smudge his previous favorite treat, Vitamin E, any more, because it's made from wheat and it makes him itch. But he loves his new grain-free food! It's kind of expensive, but because it's not loaded with unsatisfying filler, he eats less of it, so it comes out to about the same amount expense-wise. And he's at reduced risk for diabetes, which is a nice perk for an older cat too.

For a treat, now I give him a bit of chicken now and then. The SMELL of cold roast chicken woke him from a sound sleep 2 rooms away when I was making my lunch this morning... it's a good thing he's not allergic to chicken!

Love, Columbine

Well yesterday I tried to take the cone off Hermes because he's just so depressed with it on and as soon as I took it off he went to scratch his head.

So the cone is back on. I might try later tonight to see if he leaves it alone but if not I guess we may have to leave it on for a while. It really stinks for him because he keeps licking the cone as if he's trying to clean himself.

Poor little guy.

Well on Friday May 1st I had to call the vet again because he still wouldn't stop scratching at his head and he reopened his wound again so the cone was still on his head and the vet called me back Friday evening and said that she would like to give him a shot of depo to help stop the itch.

So we took him into the vets and she gave him a shot and said to try to take the cone off in 24 hours and see what happens.

On Sunday I took the cone off and he went after it again. I tried later that day thinking that maybe he just needed more time for the medicine to get into his system and no that wasn't the case, he went right after his head and cut the wound open again.

The vet told us to call her on Monday if he didn't improve and so I did but she wasn't able to return my call yesterday due to her own chemo treatment she had to go through.

I called the vets this morning and she wanted to see him a noon today and I thought when I looked at his wound last night that it was spreading and she agreed when she looked at it today.

So I had to leave my little man at the vets so they could gas him, take a scrap of the wound, test it for ringworm, and she said she wanted to make sure it wasn't skin cancer either.

I'm really hoping that they find out what it is and it's nothing too horrible.

The poor guy has had this cone on now for over a week and 1/2.

Please say a little pray that everything turns out ok.

Thanks,
Melissa

The vet just called and said that she is doing a culture test for ring worm for hermes and that will take 2 weeks.

In the mean time we have to keep doing his antibotic and keep his cone on for 2 weeks.

Poor guy is not going to be very happy about htat

That little stinker. I know that Creamsicle w/her allergies absolutely cannot stop scratching unless she gets a depo shot or takes her Prednisolone. Sometimes the Pred just isn't enough, though, and she has to get the depo shot. I hope the itching stops for poor little Hermes.

When I got home last night Hermes just wanted love and of course I gave him lots and lots of love.

I have to put the meds back on his head again and he didn't like that feeling at all last night or this morning. I feel bad that I have to do this to him 2x a day but it's hopefully for his own good and we just have to keep a really good eye on it.

Earlier this morning around 4 a.m. he got the cone off his head, I'm not sure how he did but he did and my husband had to wake me to help put his cone back on his head.

It appeared he didn't scratch it open again but that cone has to stay on for 2 weeks.

We have to wait the 2 weeks to see if he turns out positive for the ringworm. If so he will be put on liquid meds. At least we know it's not skin cancer which is wonderful news but ringworm I really don't want him to have either....and I really hope it doesn't get passed onto our other guys.

I just have to make sure I spoil him like crazy right now.

Anikaca77, if it is ringworm, you know that it is highly contagious to not only other cats, but humans also.

Prayers on the way for your little man Hermes, that whatever it is, he has a full and speedy recovery.

Yes I am aware.

So far none of the other cats have had any signs of it and Hermes head is looking so much better.

I really think the scraping did help him alot in the this case although he still trys to scratch the cone.

So I don't know if the wound is still itcy but I'm gathering it is.

We are keeping an eye on everyone. We will find out for sure if the test is postive on May 19th.

Yesterday I called the vets because over the weekend we took Hermes cone off for just a little bit to let him clean himself and he scratched open his head wound again.

I felt so bad and so silly for taking the cone off in the first place but he's been so depressed with this cone on.

Well the vet said so far Hermes test has still been negative for ring worm. She said she really isn't too sure what is causing Hermes to want to go after that spot so much but she said there are 2 options.

1. Leave the cone on until his wound is completely healed, no scabs or anything left and see what happens. If he does open his head again we will have to take him to a specialist.

or

2. He would need to be referred to a skin specialist and probably have a skin biospy done which will mean a couple hundred dollars at least.

So of course we are just going to wait and see what happens but if the wound gets worse we will take him to the vets right away.

Please say a little pray for my Little Man Hermes that his head wound heals fine and we no longer have a problem.

Thanks,
Melissa

Can cats get hotspots like dogs can? It reminds me of when my dog Daisy had hot spots and one was right on top of her head.

ETA: I looked on the internet and read that cats can get hot spots but it's rare for them to get them on the head although it's not unheard of. You might ask your vet about that and also skin mites.

What does it look like? My sister in laws kitty, Tom Cooter, went to the vet this morning because of a sore on his head. I don't know if he is digging at it. I didn't see him scratching the other day when I was there. The vet said it was an allergic reaction of some kind. But he did do a scraping I think to do some tests to make sure. Cooter was given a shot in his bum. I hope Hermes is able to heal up.

Well today we are taking Little Man back to the vets at 2:15 p.m.

We want to have his head looked at to make sure it looks like it's healing fine and also he has now developed a cold.

His eyes are dripping and he's sneezing and sounding very congested.

Please say a pray for my Little Man.

I'm so sorry too hear about the cold, we had one run through our house. It takes some time but it will clear.
Good news about the ring worm. Our Lenny sratches his head to the point of blood. then he heals and several months later he'll do it again. No ryme or reason. Can't miss it white cat red blood.
Good luck with the tests.

I just realized that I haven't posted an update. I must have too much stuff going on or something.

I took Hermes to the vets last Thursday and the vet said Hermes lungs sounded clear and that it was a probably a herpes flair up and an URI.

She said she could give him a shot which will last for 10 days instead of having to give him a pill everyday so of course I wanted to do that wince that's easier on him and it's not stressing him out.

The vet took off his cone to get a better look at his head wound and as soon as she was touching near the wound he was raising his back foot like he wanted to scratch at it.

She thinks that another 14 days with the cone on should be long enough hopefully. The vet said that we should keep the cone on for an additional 7 days after the scab falls off so that way maybe he won't reopen the wound.

If he does reopen the wound I will have to take him to our vets to get a skin biopsy done and hopefully that would tell us what is wrong but I'm really hoping we don't have to go down that road and that his wound will heal up.

Yesterday evening when I got off work my husband told me that he noticed some blood around Hermes nose and I called the vets because he's been sneezing a lot since and as soon as I got off the phone I was with him in the bathroom and he sneezed and blood with some snot that came out of his nose.

I was so scared, I've never seen blood come out of a cat like that. It wasn't a lot of blood but it still scared me.

Of course I called the vets right back and one vet tech told me that she was just about to call me and said that Ellen my vet wanted to schedule Hermes for a radiograph and a skin biopsy of his wound.

I told the vet tech about the blood and asked that Ellen give me a call back later that evening to discuss Hermes if she has time.

Later that evening Ellen called us back and we were able to explain that his wound is now healing and we are not sure if a skin biopsy is necessary but if she feels it is of course we will do it.

She told us that most like his nose is becoming irritated due to him sneezing so much but she isn't sure if the wound is connected to his sneezing and all that. We think though that Hermes is just have a really bad Herpes flair up and URI on top of that but we are not sure.

Today I came home during my lunch hour and he had a sneezing fit while I was here and sneezed out some blood with snot as well.

Again, this evening my husband was near Hermes and he was having a sneezing fit and again some blood with snot came out.

I called the vet once I got home because we weren't sure if we wanted to do this radiograph and we are worried about Hermes going under sedation because of his cold but the vet told us they are going to use gas on him tomorrow which is easier for sicker cats and hopefully everything will work out well tomorrow. She said that since she has to put him under it would be best to get the skin biopsy while he's out so we don't have to do it again to him later on.

I agree that's true but I'm going to have them run the radiograph first to see if they can see anything and check out his wound first before taking some skin just in case they might not have to do it.

He had that depo shot that was given to him on May 2nd and he has a lump on his back from the shot and it's still there.

When I had him at the vets on this past Thursday I mentioned that to Alice (another vet) and she said that still shouldn't be there but she said I could start to massage it and I've tried to do that but it hasn't gone down. I don't know if she is going to take that out tomorrow as well but man I'm just really worried about him right now.

We had to pick up everyone's food at 8 p.m. tonight and they are going to be crying in the morning for food. I have to drop Hermes off between 8-9 a.m.

Please say a little pray for my Little Man we love him so much,

Last year my Pidge was having sinus problems and when she sneezed, blood came out and sprayed on the sliding glass door. I didn't even know that cats could get nosebleeds and I freaked out but my vet gave me some saline solution to spray in her nose and she did much better. Prayers going up that Hermes will be just fine and back to normal in no time.

I just went to pick up my little man and oh my, I was so not prepared at all to see him. Part of his back had to be shaved and he's got a good incision mark on his back and also on his head.

Poor thing I just wanted to cry. I felt so bad for him.

He goes back on June 2nd to get the stitches out and we should know the results of the biopsys by then.

The price for all this was $398.51.

Hopefully his head will heal just fine because if later on he scratches his head open he'll have to go see a specialist.

But I'm going to look at the positive here and that he is with us thank goodness.

Please continue prays for my little man. Thanks,
