Incidentally, the "red uniform" of the RCMP is the DRESS uniform. The working duds are similar to that of any police force.

Canada demands Fox apology for 'despicable' comments

1 hour, 50 minutes ago

By Alexander Panetta, The Canadian Press

OTTAWA - The Canadian government has demanded an apology from Fox News for "despicable" and "disgusting" comments made on one of its late-night programs.

The government was incensed by a recent talk-show segment on the American conservative cable network that poked fun at Canada and the Canadian military.

A group of pundits took turns trashing Canada and its reliability as an ally in fighting terrorism last week as four more Canadian soldiers were killed in separate attacks in Afghanistan.

Defence Minister Peter MacKay requested an apology just before leaving for Canadian Forces Base Trenton, where he was to attend a repatriation ceremony with the families of the latest soldiers killed.

"It's crass, it's insensitive, it's in fact disgusting, given the timing," MacKay said.

"There should be an apology - to the families in particular, and to the Canadian Forces and to Canada generally - given the sacrifice and the commitment that we've demonstrated in Afghanistan."

Canadian soldiers have been fighting in Afghanistan since 2001 and have spent the last four years in the country's most violent region.

Canada has lost 116 soldiers in Afghanistan.

A spokesman stressed that the Canadian government specifically wants an apology from the panelists who made the wisecracks - and not just from the Fox network at large.

"These are despicable, hurtful and ignorant comments," said Dan Dugas, a spokesman for MacKay.

"I think that so-called comedian should stare in the camera at his first opportunity and apologize to all of the families of people he's hurt with these despicable comments.

"And he's got to say, 'I was misinformed. I was ignorant of the truth and the contribution of the Canadian Forces to the war on terror, and I want to take it back. I know as a comedian that I can fail sometimes; I failed miserably at this so-called comedy.'

"And his panelists should say the same."

Canada says it will withdraw most of its 2,500 troops from Kandahar when its current combat mission expires in 2011.

News of that impending withdrawal, and the army chief's comments that the military would need a year's hiatus to regroup and refurbish, served as a launching pad for members of the Fox panel to mock Canada.

The five-minute Fox News segment aired last week on the late-night program "Red Eye with Greg Gutfeld" and it was later posted on YouTube.

The segment features American panelists suggesting Canadian soldiers need time off for "manicures and pedicures."

The item aired after Lt.-Gen. Andrew Leslie, the Canadian Forces Chief of Land Staff, said the military would need a one-year break from operations after the difficult mission in Afghanistan winds down.

"The Canadian military wants to take a breather to do some yoga, paint landscapes, run on the beach in gorgeous white capri pants," Gutfeld said with a sneer, adding: "Isn't this the perfect time to invade this ridiculous country? They have no army."

Another panelist, Doug Benson, said he didn't even know Canadian troops were in Afghanistan.

"I didn't even know they were in the war. I thought that's where you go if you don't want to fight - you go chill in Canada," he said.

The segment was posted online (http://www.youtube.com/watch?vtcJn5XlbSFk) under the title, "How to Lose Friends and Alienate Countries."

So far, more than 3,000 people have posted responses to the clip, which also makes fun of RCMP officers and their traditional red uniforms.

Fox News host apologizes in face of outrage

OTTAWA — A Fox News host is apologizing to Canadians in the face of widespread outrage over comments he and his guests made on a late-night talk show.

"Red Eye" host Greg Gutfeld says his comments "may have been misunderstood" and in no way were meant to disrespect "the brave men, women and families of the Canadian military."

Fox News issued the Gutfeld statement just after the Canadian government demanded an apology for what it called the "despicable" and "disgusting" comments.

The recent talk-show segment came just before four more Canadian soldiers were killed in Afghanistan and featured a group of pundits taking turns trashing Canada and its reliability as an ally.

They were spurred by comments from Canada's army chief that the military would need a year's hiatus to regroup and refurbish after its Kandahar mission ends in 2011.

Gutfeld said in the Fox News segment, widely aired on the Internet, that the Canadian military "wants to take a breather to do some yoga, paint landscapes, run on the beach in gorgeous white capri pants."

"Isn't this the perfect time to invade this ridiculous country?" he said. "They have no army."

Renowned comedian and political satirist Rick Mercer has a few words of advice for the Fox News panelists who incited the Canadian government to demand an apology for their mocking of the Canadian military.

“If you're going to do satire, three of the most important rules are you have to tell the truth, you can't be a bully and don't be an asshole,” said Mr. Mercer, who hosts his own show on CBC. “Being a bully is not satire.”

Mr. Mercer learned of the controversial comments, made by Greg Gutfeld, host of the late-night program Red Eye with Gret Gutfeld after fans of his program began inundating his inbox with clips of an episode that aired on March 17.

Alexander Panetta need to learn how to write a concise story and add all the pertinent facts.

I got one quarter of the way thru the story and GUESSED that it was Greg Gutfeld of "RED EYE". I really enjoy the show- it presents the news in a very strange an offbeat way.

The segment appeared before the unfortunate incident with the four soldiers.
I saw part of it and have seen many other segments of that show where GG and other panelists poke fun at many other news stories.

The show made fun of the mission of the Canadian Forces in the ME-NOT OF the four soldiers that were killed.

I am sure that Rick Mercer had gone ahead and pulled the same style of critique out of his bodily orifices when commenting about the U.S. and our actions in the ME.

And what is wrong with painting, yoga and white capri pants?

Hidey Ho neighbors to the north!

IT's all wordage and why do the RCMP wear those pants?

"Red Eye" host Greg Gutfeld says his comments "may have been misunderstood" and in no way were meant to disrespect "the brave men, women and families of the Canadian military."

Yeah right. Then who DID he mean to disrespect?

It is always amazing when these spineless creeps hide behind the "I must have been misunderstood" excuse. I suppose..."I am sorry if my remarks offended you" reply (not sorry I said it...just sorry you are so thin-skinned you took offense) was already in use on Fox Network.

Can you imagine the uproar if a Canadian -- or any other nationality - "comedian" has made similar remarks about US troops???

I can think of a couple of PTers who would rant and rave!

The whole of the mainstream media is going insane.

This moron obviously has not paid very close attention to history, but what else is new among they and their ilk?

The Canadian Soldier has every reason to be proud of their country and the history of their armed forces. I personally served side by side with them on more than one occasion. Each time they were consumate professionals and great to work with. The main Canadian combat unit currently deployed is, IIRC, the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. Perhaps the clown who said these stupid things could read about the valiant history of this unit. How they closed with and destroyed the enemy, with distinction, in Normandy. They faced the young, brain washed and TRUE Nazi's of the 12th SS Panzer Division 'Hitlerjugend'. Had the Canadian forces at that time been properly led (read: NOT by Montgomery) they would have been even more effective. Today's Canadian Soldier comes from a long line of very tough men and women. It is good to hear and read that the current Canadian Government is doing more to provide them with better training and tools to do their job.

Idiots like this guy are why a lot of the world does not like America. Heck, morons like him are the reason a lot of AMERICANS don't like America.

"How to lose friends and alienate countries" is right. Since this is the Dog House, I'll put in my two cents. I bet that in general, Americans know less about Canada than Canadian people know about the U.S. I'm only slightly smarter than average because of my sister's Canadian former neighbors.

HEY Canuckians!

We will apologize for those comments when you apologize for this....

Snacks from pop singer Miley Cyrus "Hannah Montana" food range have been pulled from shelves due to suspected salmonella contamination. Hannah Montana's Chocolate Granola Bars have been withdrawn from stores over a peanut scare. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued the recall notice on Friday after officials discovered the snacks contained nut products which were part of the widespread peanut recall that hit the United States and Canada earlier this year.

Treat our super stars like that....and we are going to keep the band Rush, Elisha Cuthbert and Eskimo Pies until you do.

I can understand making fun of Canada or their mounties dress uniforms, but to do it on worldwide TV is just dumb.

ETA: Especially when their military is involved with OUR war on terrorism.

Why is it Fox is allways identified as a conservative network but ABC, NBC, MSNBC and CBS never get called on their liberal slant and bias?

Woah dude... Take a step back for a sec. What was said is wrong. But I have overheard PLENTY of idle chat from Canuckians saying the most horrible things about the US. Some of it deserved, perhaps, most of it not.

But before you go all "three angry faces", look in the mirror. This bullcrap goes both ways.

And really? Commentators get fired in Canada for saying controversial things? Isn't that their job?

I didn't see Puck as trying to start a fight here personally, and I think he has a point. What these idiots on TV said was stupid and ignorant, they deserve to have to apologize publicly and face the derision they are now receiving, but getting worked up into a vein-popping fury over it doesn't do anything but raise your own blood pressure. People say stupid and stereotypical things about other countries constantly, it is not limited to the U.S. I have heard many insults and stereotypes slung around about Americans as well. For this guy, the timing of his idiocy couldn't have been worse. But the way I see it, you blow him off as a jerk and not representative of the nation as a whole and go on with life.

My 2 cents.

This got lost in the 'translation'.

No where was the performance or bravery of the Canadian AFs questioned.

The 'joke' was what would the men and women do when they had time to come home and regroup.

Yoga, painting and walking on the beach in capris is not the preferred way for soldiers to 'regroup'- and any one in the armed forces of any country would tell you that they would go home, hang with family, decompress and relax.

A soldier with a sense of humor would be a little more honest. He's tell you he was going home to rock the headboard, have some drinks and hug the shait outta family members.

No need to get all scrunched up in the undie area.

In the right context, absolutely. In case of the Fox commentators it was badly timed satire.

One of the funniest quotes Ive ever seen made by a Canadian was, "We have a navy?"

Think of how many countries make the USA the butt of their jokes, satire, and outright insults, maybe Americans just have thicker skin.

You never see this type of outrage when the MSM blatantly shows their liberal bias.

How To Tell if Your Family is Too Military

1. Your wife's two favorite shades of lipstick are light green and loam.

2. You go to a barbecue and insist that your family feed in a tactical chow line at five meter intervals.

3. Before you hit the road on vacation you conduct rehearsals, backbriefs, PCI, and cover your convoy checklist.

4. Your children clear their PLCC card before they go to college.

5. Your wife has more jumps than most LTs in the company.

6. Your kids call the yard their AOR.

7. Your kids call their mother "9er Domestic."

8. Your doorbell sounds off with the current challenge and password.

9. You give the command "Fix Bayonets" at Thanksgiving Dinner.

10. Your kids show their meal cards at the kitchen door, except the oldest, who is on separate rations.

11. You make your daughter sign out on pass on Prom Night.

12. You do your "back to school" shopping at the Army Surplus.

13. Your kids call the tooth fairy "Slicky Boy."

14. Your son fails the third grade but tells everyone he was a "phase three recycle."

15. Your wife's "high-n-tight" is more squared away than your commander's.

16. Your kids walk to school using field formations.

17. Your kids understand, and use, tactical hand signals in public.

18. Your family drives a POMV.

19. You don't have a wife and kids. They are all dependents.

20. Kit inspections before deploying to the unit battle position for the conduct defensive ops (camping).

21. Your kids jack up the troops for not executing a proper salute with a good cut.

22. Your kids know the time. 1 - 1 - 2!

23. Your kids (even the five year old) can break down and clean a .45 blindfolded.

24. And it was your wife who taught them how to do it.

25. Your kids don't cut school, they go on SERE exercises.

26. When your kids got together to beat the hell out of the school bully it wasn't a conspiracy, it was a problem.

27. Your kids know that their school is 1,723 metres from your front door and they know how many clicks they'll need on a 120mm mortar to drop a round on the principals car, but your eight year old daughter thinks the 81mm mortar is 'prettier' and makes a stink about it.

28. Your kids always check their six.

29. Your wife takes a knee and lights up while in line at the Walmart with a regulation lighter.

Why talk about the subject when you and your buddy Liz would rather be dismisive and insulting about others points of view? Ya'll can be pretty petty when you are being condescending.

You also really need to read more.

Ill recommend 2 books to you, writen by long time liberal, democrat and 20+ year reporter/producer at CBS, Bernard Goldberg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernard_Goldberg). Bias: A CBS Insider Exposes How the Media Distort the News (http://www.amazon.com/Bias-Insider-Exposes-Media-Distort/dp/0060520841/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1237960218&sr=8-1) and A Slobbering Love Affair: The True (And Pathetic) Story of the Torrid Romance Between Barack Obama and the Mainstream Media (http://www.amazon.com/Slobbering-Love-Affair-Pathetic-Mainstream/dp/1596980907/ref=pd_sim_b_1_img). Im sure if you cant find them at your local library or local liberal bookstore you can find them on Amazon by following the links. Goldberg has writen other books on the subject of liberal bias in the media but I havent read them yet.
