I'm still trying to figure out what's been making Smudge so itchy. Problem is, he doesn't like canned food that doesn't contain fish, and the only limited-ingredients ones that are easy to find (Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance) aren't fish. So I got a can of Duck & Green Peas and a can of Venison & Green Peas, and cracked open the venison. Well, his sniffer and his purr engaged immediately, and once I got all the "secret ingredients" and extra water mixed in, his tongue was in that bowl until the bowl was licked clean. I never even tried the duck.
It's a little pricey, but so meaty (no grain, spuds, or other prey food, except the peas) that I can give him 1/4 can at a time. He still mostly eats c/d kibble for his kidneys; I just needed a canned "treat food" to mix his medicine & supplements into. So, we'll see how it goes. I have to admit, it smells tasty even to me. And he licks the bowl halfway across the floor, making sure to get every last bit of it!
Right now he looks a bit like Fonzie, spiky and greasy with the hydrocortisone ointment that I put on his itchies. But he likes his twice-a-day "spa time" when he gets combed with the human comb and rubbed where it itches. He kept trying to get me to comb his mouth, so I got him a toothbrush and rubbed it around his mouth. He loves it! Strange little animal...
