I think the absoulute best breed of dog is Shelties even though I own a Border Collie. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

I would have to say the Mini Schnauzer,
they love to play, have a great personality,
independent, great watchdog, don't shed, and love their family.

Even though I own an aussie mix and a pug I would have to say the best breed (aside from my wonderful dogs) is the German Shepherd Dog. I think they are the most beautiful, noble, strong, intelligent, brave, loyal dogs. My next dog is going to be a GSD without a doubt!

Basset hounds! No doubt, Basset Hounds. My mother said once, looking at our beautiful Daisy, "I just don't get it." I asked her what she didn't understand, and she answered, "I don't understand why EVERYONE doesn't want a Basset!" That sums up my feelings. Basset Hounds rule.

Rottweilers are definatly NOT for everyone. But they're MY absolute favorite breed of dog!!!

The reason I have two Golden Retrievers is that they are my favorite breed. I love the power and size, but mainly the wonderful personalities and love these dogs display constantly. They are magnificent looking, and just plain wonderful companions for the whole family, children, adults and cats! I think Labrador Retrievers display the same wonderful qualities as Goldens.

But, the next dog, Golden or otherwise, will be one that needs me more than I need him/her. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

Rottie,
I wanted to tell you that I watched a wonderful program about Rotties on Animal Planet this afternoon. I think they must feature a breed and spend the whole time talking about them.
Those Rotties were magnificent. There was one named Carl, belonging to Alexandra Day, an author who has a whole series of books based on Carl, the Rottweiler. Is that where your Carl got his name?
You must watch for a repeat of the show if you haven't already seen it.

Logan, is that the one where the dogs were dressed up to go to the hospital or nursing home?
If its what I am thinking of, it is Breed all About it on animal planet, very informative!! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

Papillons, of course. Brains and a bark (not a yip), loving, loyal, obedient, and beautiful all in one small, easy to take care of package!

There is a commercial on TV for Celebrex in which there is a dog walker in the park. There is a Border Collie who is featured and it mimics the exercises being done by a group of people in the park, but if you watch for the shot of all the dogs with the dog walker, there is a Papillon among them.
(Just realized when I watched Westminster that I wasn't pronouncing the name of this breed correctly.)

The absolute BEST breed of dog has to be a German Shepherd!!! They are every thing you could possiblsy want in a dog. The thing I love most about them is that they have a very distinct personality, and seem to understand you and you them!

Rachel I notice dogs and cats in ads too!! Sometimes I may not remember the name of the product they were selling, but I can remember the beautiful dog or cat that was featured in the ad! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif (Not what the advertisers had in mind!)

Logan - you're 100% correct. I've never met a Golden that hasn't been wonderful in every aspect. Plus we have 2 Black Labs that run a very close 2nd. I do love Beagles, if you can keep them home! But, of course, when you find any kind that needs you(especially mixed breeds), that has to be the best.

Thanks for the heads-up Rachel! I have yet to see the commercial, but I will be on the lookout for the Papillon in the Celebrex commerical for sure.

One of the best breeds has to be the Silky Terrier. I have had two and they are great with kids and very loyal to their family. Plus they are very intelligent and can do any tricks they want to learn. Great dogs!!
I also go for the mutts. My inlaws have a half daschhound half rottwieler and that was the sweetest dog on earth!! she looked like a rott. but had short legs and a long body like the dasch. Weird but sweet dog!!

Sophies Daddy

My mother has a Silky Terrorist, er terrier. He is a wonderful dog, but he hates children. He doesn't growl or snap, but he will do everything he can to avoid them.

It probably has something to do with the fact that he was chased and cornered as a puppy by a group of evil children. He was so scared that he pooped. He went from an outgoing puppy to a cautious, fraidy-dog in one day.

As a breed in general, however, they are generally great. They are easy to train, don't shed, and love to please. They do have a terrier prey instinct, however, so off leash outside is probably not the best idea.

My mother's little stinky terrorist loves me like no other dog except Sophie. I call him the hugger-mugger because, when I see him, I have to pick him up, he hugs me around my neck and showers me with kisses!

There are so many wonderful breeds, I can't decide. My dog growing up was a beagle. He was my side-kick. Everything I did he was right beside me. When I got in trouble he was at my side. My muddy foot prints on the carpet, his muddy, little paw prints right beside them. Then there was my Mom's GSD. She was bred once and the care she showed for her pups was unbelievable! Lucky, a Beagle mix mutt, saved my father's life by warning him of a rattlesnake on a path in the woods (my father is hard of hearing) My own Jeffrey and Bandit..Jeff is a mixed breed who will win your heart with his goofy smile and my Bandit, a Pug, who is the most sweet-natured animal I've ever encountered. He's a great watch dog. If he hears a doorbell ring, even on TV, he is right at the front door ready to fight anyone who dares enter our home http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif (Of course he showers everyone with kisses when they do enter). I REALLY want a Blood Hound, they seem to be the epitemy of relaxation and in my high stress job, all I want to do is relax. The greyhound, so regal, so classy. I am saddened by their plight as racedogs (I live an hour away from a racetrack). I want to adopt them all. I've read this topic for days, but I can't decide! Can I have a "best breed" for all my moods?

I have to go along with ownerof3dogs.The dobie is such a wonderful dog.Our first was a male,Sinbad. He was 9 yrs old when our son was born, never been around infants or children before. But Sinbad fell in love with our son,he would have given his life for any of us.We recently lost our female Jessica. She was also very protective of my children.Jessica never let the boys answer the door if she didn't know who it was.She would put herself between the door and my children. They are beautiful, regal, loyal, affectionate, playful and very loving. But I think I just described every dog out there.Enough of my rambling, sorry. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

Golden Retrievers and labs have to be the ultimate great natured dog. When we first moved to the neighborhood, the golden across the street was the first one to "welcome" us!
She is always so happy to see me. There is also an Alaskan Malumate that lives in our neighborhood that is very friendly!
I would not advise just anyone getting a Jack Russell. I had one and they are very high strung and need a lot of room to roam or they get bored and then watch out! Mine chewed all the way through my dining room table leg!

Hi Annibale,

A friend of my Aunts' in California had a *champion* Jack Russel whom she was plannning on breeding, and she offered me (when I was a little girl of about 8 or 9) a free puppy because she liked me. Well, the same night she offered me one of "Bubba's" puppies, Bubba (the name of her Jack Russel) was misbehaving and being a typical Jack Russel so she put him in her car for a *timeout*......BIG MISTAKE!!! He ATE the entire interior of that *BRAND NEW* luxery car. I then decided I was not interested in such a dog http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif They are not a dog to be owned by someone who does not know much about dogs...they are ALOT of dog, in a little body, too much dog for me, but I respect the person who could own and love a Jack Russel!

I have to agree with you there. Mini schnauzers are great dogs. They are very protective and full of personality! Although of course (as we all really know) every breed is the best! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif I plan to own a siberian husky and/or german shepard sometime also. I love all dogs.~~wolf Q http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif
(I've been owned by a demanding little poodle for 15 years and I have to say I love them also! Very loyal and playful)

I know that I am biased but I would have to say the best breed is the Soft-coated Wheaton Terrier. When we decided to get a puppy we did a lot of research on dogs and we kept coming back to the Wheaton. They are full of personality, loving, loyal, don't shed, and very intelligent. Sadie (our Wheaton) has not met a person (or other animal) that she has not liked. She is 30 pounds of pure energy and not a mean bone in her body!

I love all herding dogs! My favorites are Australian Shepherds and Australian Cattledogs. I own an aussie, and my grandpa owns 2 cattledogs! I am not too fond of retrievers, they're great dogs and all, but I know many other people will have a retriever of some kind, and I think other breeds need their spotlight, too. If I were to own a retriever, it would be the flat-coated retriever, they are HILARIOUS!!!

Rottweiler is the absoulute best breed for me. I have a 21 month old female her name is Anja. She is our pride and joy, We got her from her breeder at 8 weeks old and 16 lbs. She was house broken from day one no accidents at all. She graduated from puppy kindergarden top in the class and the same with obedience. She is what a Rottweiler truly is not the horror stories that you hear. That is due to bad owners and lack of training and socialization. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

Tibetan spaniels are the best breed...closely followed by shelties. Tibbies have the heart of a big dog in a small dog's body. They're intelligent, full of personality, independent minded, loving & very beautiful. To see tibetan spaniels, go to: http://www.tibbies.net

I think the best breed of dog is a labrador retriever. I didnt pick this breed because I have one, I picked it because I really think it is the best breed. Why? Well, they are excellent with children and other people, they are not vicious, they are easy to train, they live to love, and they will protect you from harm.

I've been around MANY dogs in my life . My Father had a Dog Kennel in our backyard when I was a kid ,he had Poodles, Boston Terriers Schnauzers, Pekinese, Coondogs, Irish Setters,Ithink thats all he had . My Sister raised Rott's & Boxers My brother had German Shepards & my husband & I have had Dobies,Pit Bulls, Mixes,Boston Terriers & Boxers, and of them all Boxers are the smartest & most behaved & definatly the easiest to train cuz they are so smart. But Boston Terriers are my mostest favorite they are smart somewhat behaved little and so loving .

Hello Melbajoyce
I'm so glad to see an Oklahoman on here I have a Pom that lives next door to me . If they accidently let her out she runs for ever usually she has my Boston Terrier Baby get out there to chase her and my Baby will make her hold still till they get there to catch her. I don't know why she holds still for her but it works so they come over & ask can Baby come catch Julie for us its funny to watch . Are ther any more Okies out there ?

Have to agree with 'buckwild', the mutt rules. What a magnificent looking dog is Tide. I have met a couple of Pharoah crosses, and they always seem to enhance the qualities of the other breed of the cross. Do you think this is because the Pharoah is so ancient? My other favorite crosses are Border Collie/Golden Retriever; German Shepherd with Samoyed works well; for the smaller breeds, well the Poodle/Maltese is a good mix if you don't mind the grooming. You get more vigor and less congenital problems with a cross.

The Alaskan Malamute is my number one breed of choice. But I am glad they aren't popular with everyone, because they are certainly NOT for everyone! And this also prevents too many being bred, which leads to bad breeding....

I also really love Dobermans... they're gorgeous... and Great Danes.. and many others, lol http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/tongue.gif

Kodak Moment the malamute/husky, Keesha Marie the cocker/field spaniel?, Fuji Film the chow/aussie?, Secretariat and Grem Lynne the unrelated brown tabby and white DSH, Hollow and Sparky, father/daughter black DSH, Cheyenne Autumn my pride and joy TB, Matastar's Morning Star my Rocky Mountain horse colt, and the birds!
