Only 100+ games until opening day, but it's never too early to talk baseball.

A new TV channel debuts tonight at 6pm. It's called the MLB Channel, and if you have DirecTV just tune into channel 213.

At 7pm tonight, there will be a replay of the only perfect game pitched in World series history. Don Larsen's game 5 of the 1956 Series. I was fortunate enough to have seen it on TV.

An interesting article about this show from the NY Post - http://www.nypost.com/seven/12282008/sports/moresports/its_a_perfect_start_for_mlb_net_146181.htm

I'm hoping this will be the year for the Pirates. It's about time they get their heads out of the ground and have a winning season. The Steelers are doing great and I hope some of that success rubs off on the Bucs!

I was watching the MLB channel and they replayed a special that originally played in HBO.

It had to do with the series between AZ and NY!

We just had experienced 9/11, I lost my dad on Oct 31 2001 and the World Series was on.

MY dad was a HUGE BB fan, he dragged us to the games and he was a really good fungo batter!;)

The day the Diamondbacks won the series was the night we held his memorial and I was pleased that baseball had a little to do with helping everyone get over the pain of the terrorist attacks.

I was doubly hurt during that time, I lost my dad and the feeling of safety I had up until that crazy morning. Sounds stupid, but my dad would not have wanted it any different.

Being able to take a few seconds to distract myself from what I was feeling and what our country had been thru was wonderful. I could distract myself for a few minutes and enjoy something fun.

I spent many hours watching games with him and I remember hanging out in his front room talking and arguing balls and strikes.

He was right more that I was.

I'd look over at him and he'd smile and act like he KNEW that pitch would end in in the stands

He'd smile and say "Home Run" before the ball ever left the pitcher's hand.

I never figured out how he did it.....

When you love baseball THAT much, it doesn't matter!:D

The sportswriters finally did it.

Something that's long overdue....

Voted Jim Rice into the HOF.

Hmmm..... Cooperstown is about 70 miles from here. Might be time to finally visit the place.

When someone like Rice, who ruled AL pitching staffs for years, almost fails to make it into the hall because he didn't play nice-nice with the idiots in the press, there's something wrong.

No kidding!

Your comment about finally going to Cooperstown reminds me of a call I was on with a computer tech guy, years ago. He was from Detroit and we were talking about landmarks and such...

I asked, 'Have you ever been to ---------?"

He laughed and said, "No, it's never been over to see me!":D

The World Classic final are at Dodger Stadium, but I suspect that the ducats are out of reach for the 'working stiff', like us.

-----------

Last night the Dodger ownership sold tickets to a Night Under the Stars at D Stadium.

You could participate on every part of the baseball experience- Batting practice, fielding, pitching the the bullpen, hitting in the cages...

500 dollars a ticket. I don't know how many people took up the offer!

It begins -

For the faithful, spring has finally begun.

While the weather may not show it, the unofficial countdown to Red Sox opening day began at 2:30 Friday afternoon, when the Red Sox equipment truck left Fenway Park, loaded with bats, balls, and sunflower seeds, and began the long drive down to the team’s spring training complex in Ft. Myers, Fla.

89-year old Red Sox icon Johnny Pesky hobbled over to the cab of the massive 18-wheeler that will haul the team’s equipment the 1,480 miles to the spring training complex. He clambered in and started the truck’s engines.

"See you at Fenway in April. Let’s go!" shouted Pesky as he turned the truck’s keys.

Mexico lost the Carribean title to Venezuela last night. It was a really great series. I loved the crowds and I am really looking forward to the WBC. THe championship series will be played at D Stadium!

I hate the Dodgers more every day.
They announced that the TOP minor league club is the Albequergue Isotopes.

ISOTOPES? Where did the Dukes go?

I have to use the line that someone said about B Bonds....How can someone who is at the top of his profession never question what he was doing/using in his body?

Why?

Because of the way he treated the media, his teammates and the fans......

Not even a week into the season and the Angels already have bad luck roaming the grounds.

A 27 year old fan was killed in a fight during the opening day game. He got into a dustup with another moron, was smacked from behind, hit his head and dies....

Today a 22 year old pitcher for the team was killed in a hit and run accident.

RICHARD
04-09-2009, 05:31 PM
Two things about this Angel's pitcher that was killed early today.

Nick Adenhart's agent is Scott Boras, a scummy money hungry SOB that always holds teams ransom when a player's contract get renegotiated. He showed up at the press conference and did a great little talk, complete with alligator tears.

He's probably more broken up about the fact that he'll lose the money that this poor kid would have made had he not been involved in the accident.

Then, listening to the local ESPN affiliates they have been very outspoken about the accident. They mention everything except the fact that the kid that killed NA was a drunk, driving on a suspended license.

I wonder if there is a little problem with telling the story and mentioning alcohol, when sports has a very real relationship with it, especially beer.

The Tigers and Red Wings owner is one classy guy.

Detroit Three find hope in centerfield

BY MITCH ALBOM
FREE PRESS COLUMNIST

When the Tigers open their season this week, fans will look to centerfield at Comerica Park and see the greenery, the flagpoles and the giant fountain. And, as usual, every time there's a Detroit home run, those fountains will erupt.

That spot, in the stadium business, is what they call prime real estate. Companies pay big money to have their logo smack dab in the middle, so that every time fans gaze out there, the brand is what they see.

For the last few years, General Motors has sponsored that fountain, and paid a substantial fee to do so. This season, with all that has happened in the auto business, GM's folks called the Tigers and said, regretfully, they could no longer afford it. Given the layoffs, the bailouts, the threat of bankruptcy, well, owning centerfield was too great a luxury.

GM had to step aside.

Which is when Mike Ilitch, the Tigers' owner, stepped in.

There were other bidders. Other offers. Who wouldn't want that real estate? A deal of three years worth between $1.5 million and $2 million was on the table.

Ilitch said no thanks.

He was going to give it away.

Or maybe "give it back" is a better way of putting it.

Chalk up an outfield assist

"It just seems strange to have the car companies in trouble," he told me this past week. "The Big Three, where would this city be without them? I mean, my father came from the old country and got a job at Ford's. It put food on our table.

"It's scary to think that any of those carmakers could go away."

So Ilitch told his people to thank the potential paying customers, but to say that the centerfield fountain this year was spoken for. It would be the feature site for General Motors, Ford and Chrysler.

For free.

No charge.

Not one penny.

"It's just a small opportunity to respond to what's happening," Ilitch said, embarrassed by the attention.

There's nothing small about it.

Every business has been affected by the collapsing economy; baseball teams are no exception. Walking away from a couple million dollars is not considered a wise financial move. Who turns away paying customers?

In this case, Ilitch did.

Because sometimes it's about the where and the who, not just the how much.

A message from the ballclub

"I thought for a few weeks before deciding," Ilitch admitted. "I didn't want to offend anybody. I didn't want to put off the foreign carmakers. And I didn't want people to think we couldn't sell the fountain. As a businessman, you do worry about those things.

"But I finally said, 'The heck with it.' I want to do something to help."

So starting with the home opener this Friday afternoon, the Chrysler, General Motors and Ford logos will be on an equal plane above the fountain. And beneath those logos will be a few new words:

"The Detroit Tigers support our automakers."

It may be as close to a social statement as centerfield has ever made.

Visitors in Detroit for this weekend's Final Four may think our small, thriving downtown looks a lot like other cities' downtowns. But there is something different beneath the surface.

Here, we construct in the face of adversity. We build on hope. Pure investors will tell you a city with rampant unemployment, enormous budget shortfalls, a troubled school system and a laughable city council is not a place to put your money. We do it anyhow.

We do it because we love our past and we believe in our future. We do it because the alternative would be to close shop altogether. We do it because last week there were stories about the gleaming new Yankee Stadium, which cost $1.5 billion and has seats as high as $2,625 a game -- and here is Ilitch giving away his fountain for free.

Detroit may be the new home of the bumpy ride, but as the Three Musketeers once discovered, it's a little smoother when you grab hands with others. Think about that the next time a home run sends that fountain shooting up to those logos. Sometimes it really is all for one and one for all.

Mark - The Bird - Fidrych, died in an accident at his home this afternoon. He was only 54 - far too young.

From the Boston Globe -

Fidrych killed in accident
Posted by Chad Finn, Globe Staff April 13, 2009 05:42 PM

Mark Fidrych, a Northborough native whose aw-shucks charm and on-the-mound antics helped make him a national phenomenon as a Detroit Tigers rookie pitcher in 1976, was killed in an accident in his hometown this afternoon while working on a dump truck. He was 54.

Fidrych, who won 19 games as a rookie before injuries derailed his career, was found dead on his 107-acre farm this afternoon, according to the office of Worcester District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr. Fidrych was found by a family friend underneath the truck at about 2:30 p.m.

Fidrych was found by his friend Joseph Amorello beneath his 10-wheel truck at about 2:30 p.m. Fidrych, who worked in trucking and construction, had a job scheduled for yesterday morning, but the site wasn’t ready, so he returned home. Later in the day, Amorello, for whom Fidrych did some work, stopped by Fidrych’s home to say hello and discuss a future job, only to encounter a horrific scene.

Neither the district attorney’s office nor the Northborough Police Department would confirm further details of the accident beyond that he was killed while working on his truck. Reached via cell phone last night, Amorello said, ‘‘It was obvious there was nothing I could do at that time.’’

Fidrych’s baseball legacy is as one of the more enjoyable shooting stars in the sport’s history. In 1976 -- less than two full years after the Tigers selected the lanky righthander in the 10th round of the 1974 amateur draft out of Worcester Academy -- Fidrych made the Tigers’ Opening Day roster out of spring training as a non-roster invitee.

His first start of his rookie season did not come until May 15, but it was memorable: He did not allow the Indians a hit for the first six innings, finishing with a complete-game, two-hit, 2-1 victory.

Fidrych was on his way, and with his affable grin and unkempt curls -- he was nicknamed ‘‘The Bird,’’ after the Sesame Street character to whom he bore a resemblance -- it wasn’t long before the 21-year-old had an enormous following.

His unofficial star-making moment came June 28 against the New York Yankees. In a nationally televised game on ABC’s ‘‘Monday Night Baseball’’ and in front of a crowd of 47,855 at Tiger Stadium, Fidrych pitched a complete-game seven-hitter, allowing just one run in the Tigers’ 5-1 victory. Strutting around the mound, talking to the baseball, and engaging the crowd, he received a prolonged ovation after the final out, eventually returning to the field to acknowledge the raucous cheers.

Fidrych’s starts became must-see events -- he appeared on the covers of ‘‘Sports Illustrated’’ (once with Big Bird) and ‘‘Rolling Stone,’’ among others. But his unexpected celebrity did not hinder him on the mound. He went 19-7 as a rookie, leading the league in earned-run average (2.34) and complete games (24). He was the starting pitcher for the American League in the All-Star Game, won the AL Rookie of the Year Award, and finished second to the Orioles’ Jim Palmer in the AL Cy Young voting.

But he tore knee cartilage during spring training the following year and was placed on the disabled list until May 24. He sustained a shoulder injury in July 1977 and ended up pitching in just 58 games during his major league career.

Fidrych attempted a comeback in 1983 with the Boston Red Sox and went to their Triple A team in Pawtucket, R.I. But he never pitched in the majors after 1980 and retired in 1983.

WOW - this was too cool!!!

Hey, now. Petitte pitched from the wind-up with the bases loaded. On the second pitch, Ellsbury took a big lead and danced down the line. Petitte never looked at him. It was instructive. On the next pitch, Ellsbury did the same thing and took off. Drew stpped back, and Ellsbury slid head first over the front of home plate. Afterward, he smiled as he high-fived teammates in the dugout and came out for a curtain call. Francona couldn't help but grin, too. That's the first Red Sox player to steal home since Jose Offerman in 1999. He did it on a double steal. It was the first straight steal since Billy Hatcher did in 1994.

To defeat the Milwaukee Brewers?? Again another defeat at the hands of those Brewers! The Pirates can't win in either ballpark! Another blown lead in the ninth did them in again tonight. I think the Pirates are 0-19 against the brewers. Maybe tomorrow. . . .

Glad to see Manny out of a few games. If he had been playing last night it would have even been much worse than it was, and it was pretty bad. :o What a disappointment after Jayson Werth's performance the night before stealing bases - - including home!!:cool::cool:

We were discussing this today. The LAD have the best record in baseball - without Manny!! Why don't they save some $$$ and get rid of him, along with his idiosyncrasies? Must be some sort of contract clause that addresses using illegal meds.

The closest I would guess is that there is a clause - ugh, I can't think of the term, It's a good behavior clause - that could let the LADs out of the contract that he signed. As it is, the hoopla and the 'specials' the team were touting stopped soon after the news of his suspension. I wasn't paying attention to the attendance stats, but I can imagine people were ticked.

One promotion was something like 2 tix, two hotdogs, two beers, parking and
some other crap for 99 dollars. They also were doing tix specials - a handful of games for 99 bucks.

The team has been pretty good lately and that shows that maybe the team has made some inroads since the McCourts took over the team, I'll give them kudos, but I still don't care for either of them.

McCourt http://bestsmileys.com/thumbs/6.gif

The thing that ices me is the way that they McC's are trying to 'sell' the club.

They recently had some kind of 'Taco/Burrito' meet and greet with one of the players-I was so effing turned off about it, I didn't post.

I just skimmed thru the article so I may be wrong on some facts.

The event was held during a homestand and one of the players was to host a some kind of all-you-can-eat spread. The tix were either 35/45 dollars- I believe that the tix to that was in addition towhatever the person paid to see the game. (The event was held after a game.) If I want to eat burritos or tacos with the Dodgers, I'll go to Taco Bell and watch the game on TV.

------------------

The McC's recently 'bought' the rights to the El Lay Marathon and moved it to Memorial Day weekend.

The runners complained that the weather would be too warm, the attendance was way down because people were out doing other stuff on the 'holiday' weekend and the McC's were no where to be seen.

I kinda dread the team making any kind of run for the pennant and WS.

It only means that stupid promotions and higher tix prices are ahead.

They just released the results from the toxicology tests on the woman who was driving the car that was in the accident that killed Angel's picture Nick Adenhart.

She had alcohol in her system, but the autopsy was unable to determine the amount. Now, the driver who hit the car was a drunk with multiple charges for DUI. They were able to measure his BAC EXACTLY, but couldn't even get a reading on the woman?

Not saying anything about the woman, but I do believe that it's a little move by the DA's in Anaheim, to shade the case in their favor.

We can hair samples from my armpit and tell exactly what I had for dinner on Oct. 12, 2002, but they can't figure out a BAC? hmmmm.....

Now that hockey is over I can concentrate on baseball.

Justin Verlander seems to be in a groove again. Pitched an entire game earlier in the week - gave up 6 hits, one walk, and won the game.

Then on Friday, Rick Porcello, our 20 year old pitcher, won his 7th game, and batted 2 - 3, with 2 RBIs.

Don't expect to see them in the World Series, but they are doing better than last year.

About stats?

Lately, I have been kinda turned off about some of the stats that the announcers talk about. It's mostly for the fantasy league fans.

In the paper?

I got RISP, OBP and some of the others.

It took me a while to get NP, L10, STR in the box scores.

Now, Number of Pitches, Last 10 games (a won, lost summary) and Streaks (won and lost) are part of the listings.

I am a causal fan, I do enjoy some of the stats, but some of them are truly bizarre and confusing.....

"Joe Blow hits .366 with runners on third, during the first and third weeks of a month that ends in "ER" or Days that end in uneven numbers during a full moon or election year!"

Pittsburgh fans, I have a question for you. The Cubs are playing there tonight. My dad and I have been watching the game. The camera periodically shows a beautiful picture of the city with a bridge, a building that says UPMC (or UPNC? sorry but I don't have my bifocals on!) at the top, and to the left of that building is another that is lighted at the top in sort of a yellow-orange color -- what is the lighted building? It reminds us of one here in Chicago. Dad and I are architecture buffs.

Thanks,

Elyse, I think you're thinking of the Gulf building. I not sure of the code, but you can look at the top of the building and tell the weather. I think if the top was blue, it meant rain an if it flashed on and off, it means thunderstorms. Orange was for fair weather. Before the USX tower was built, the Gulf building was the tallest in Pittsburgh. Like the Empire State building, it has it's own observation deck.

This Saturday, July 4th, will mark the 70th Anniversary of Lou Gehrig's luckiest man on the face of the earth speech.

MLB to fight '4♦ALS' awareness
Campaign commemorates 70th anniversary of Gehrig speech

By Barry M. Bloom / MLB.com
"For the past two weeks you have been reading about a bad break I got. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth. I have been in ballparks for 17 years and have never received anything but kindness and encouragement from you fans."
-- Lou Gehrig, July 4, 1939

Those words were uttered by Lou Gehrig in a ceremony between games of a doubleheader at Yankee Stadium nearly 70 years ago as he was dying from ALS -- amyotrophic lateral sclerosis -- a disease that was unknown at the time, but would ultimately bear his name.

In honor of Gehrig's memory, Major League Baseball has teamed with four major non-profit organizations to find a cure for the illness that destroys the nerve cells controlling muscles, causes complete paralysis and ultimately leads to death an average of 3-5 years after diagnosis.

The campaign, called "4♦ALS Awareness," will culminate with Gehrig's words being read at all Major League ballparks where games are played this coming July 4, during the seventh-inning stretch.

"We are honored and pleased to have the opportunity to join these four important organizations in an attempt to make progress in the fight against ALS, a disease that is associated with one of the greatest players in baseball history," Commissioner Bud Selig said in a statement. "Lou Gehrig displayed tremendous courage and strength in the face of a debilitating illness, and his speech 70 years ago still stands as one of the defining moments in baseball history."

The four participating organizations are The ALS Association, ALS TDI, Augie's Quest (the Muscular Dystrophy Association's ALS research initiative), and Project A.L.S. MLB.com will also conduct an online auction to raise funds for the initiative.

"Major League Baseball is making a huge difference in the fight against Lou Gehrig's disease through this July 4 effort," said Augie Nieto, founder and chief inspiration officer for MDA's Augie's Quest. "Both in terms of public awareness and fundraising, the MLB contribution is significant and has a profound impact on the lives of people living with this devastating disease."

Gehrig, the Yankees first baseman and Hall of Famer, was still in the midst of his famous 2,130-game consecutive playing streak when he began to feel weakness in his muscles. Eight games into the 1939 season, on May 2 at old Tiger Stadium in Detroit, Gehrig decided he couldn't go and ended the streak. He'd never play again.

Fred Rice, an usher at Tiger Stadium that day, recalled on the 60th anniversary of Gehrig's last game that he muffed a few balls during batting practice at first base that day, threw down his glove in disgust and didn't return to the field.

"I remember it just like it was yesterday," Rice told Knight-Ridder a decade ago.

Gehrig passed away on June 2, 1941, only 17 days before his 38th birthday. His record consecutive-game playing streak was broken by Orioles shortstop Cal Ripken Jr. on Sept. 6, 1995, at Baltimore's Camden Yards. Ripken would far surpass the mark, playing in 2,632 consecutive games before voluntarily sitting one out against the Yankees late in the 1998 season at Baltimore's home park.

Generations later, Catfish Hunter, another Yankees Hall of Famer, died while suffering from ALS on Sept. 9, 1999. He was only 53.

"ALS is a crisis. It is an unmet medical need. It has been labeled an incurable disease, but with the technology and expertise available now we believe this problem can and will be solved," said Sean Scott, president of ALS TDI. "This is exactly what is happening in our lab today. We are grateful to be part of this initiative and encourage everyone to get involved in the '4♦ALS Awareness' campaign."

As part of the 70th anniversary commemoration of Gehrig's famous speech, MLB will ask all players to wear a "4♦ALS" patch on their chest.

"The ALS Association is proud to partner with Major League Baseball, and our ALS organization team members in this historic initiative to raise awareness and resources in the fight against ALS," said Allen L. Finkelstein, chair of The ALS Association National Board of Trustees. "The '4♦ALS Awareness' campaign provides renewed hope that Lou Gehrig's greatest accomplishment will not be measured by statistics, but by the lives saved in his name."

"Project A.L.S. is thrilled to partner with Major League Baseball and the ALS Community to forward research that will result in effective treatments and a cure," said Valerie Estess, founder and director of research of Project A.L.S.

"This is Lou Gehrig's legacy."

My mother died from ALS, Lou Gehrig's disease. It is heartbreaking, and any efforts to help find a cure are well worth it. At least as of ten years ago, there is not even a test for it - basically, they tested Ma for everything else, and then when that all came up negative, gave her the ALS diagnosis.

Because he is a slob, I want to knock his arse down and shave his head...I am going to invoke the spirit of my mom....

"He looks like he smells!"

Seriously?

I hate the stupidity that pro players get because they are 'gifted'.

In the early Dodger years the O'Malley's demanded 'clean cut-tedness" from the players. I remember Walter Alston and the 70's "hair wars" with some players on the team, Don Sutton looked like a friggin Brillo Pad on the mound.

I still have nightmares about Oscar Gamble and his tumbleweed!

For some reason the uni rules/fashion started to change and it's not the same anymore.

The pine tar on the helmets makes me crazy.
Baggy uni pants, like Man-roid hair, the bandana, and oversized jersey?
I can't defend any of that.....especially when the team lets one player get away with it!

I really do miss the Old Astros uniforms and want to see the White Sox play in shorts again.

And while we are at it?

Give the batters one extra strike!:D

At last, Wakefield is an All-Star
By Mike McMahon
[email protected]

BOSTON - Tim Wakefield was planning on taking his wife, Stacy, on a mini-vacation during next week's All-Star break.

I hope she doesn't mind St. Louis; I hear it's beautiful there this time of year.

Yesterday, the 17-year veteran was named to his first All-Star team, when Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon selected the knuckleballer to come out of the bullpen for the American League.

"I've been a big fan of his for a long time," said Maddon. "He's having a great season and it's about time he was named an All-Star."

It is about time.

Wakefield, 42, becomes the oldest first-time All-Star since Satchel Paige was named as a 46-year-old in 1952.

My brother works in broadcast and we got to visit the press booths before the game. All in all, a wonderful day! :) Here is a link to the photos that hubby took for those who might be interested.

Great shots, and it looks like you had a great time. The win was the icing on the cake too!
I took a peek at some of your other albums - hope you don't mind. The pictures of the old stone church were beautiful. They just don't build them like that anymore. Such beautiful surroundings in which to say a final good-bye.

That is the truth! I was hoping for a win (they won the previous two games against the Mets but you can't assume anything) and it was indeed the icing on the cake. :)

No problem that you snooped at the other albums. They are public anyway. :) My mom was buried in Bala Cynwyd, PA and died in Ocean City, NJ so, just like my dad, we had the funeral at the little chapel in the cemetery in PA because of the distance involved. It was basically family and was a beautiful setting.

10 runs in the first inning!!

The worst loss in the Reds history. The previous worst defeat for the Reds, baseball's first professional franchise, was 26-6 on July 26, 1892. That also was against the Phillies.

So are you Philly fans voting for Brandon Inge? We Tiger fans are voting for Shane Victorino.

Time is running out to vote Tigers third baseman Brandon Inge onto the AL All-Star team. He's vying with four other players in an online race. The deadline is 4 p.m. tomorrow.

You can vote for Inge, who would make his first All-Star Game, at www.tigers.com/vote. The game is July 14 in St. Louis.

The Detroit Tigers have teamed with the Philadelphia Phillies to encourage fans in both cities to vote for Tigers third baseman Brandon Inge and Phillies outfielder Shane Victorino in the 2009 All-Star Game’s Final Vote.

Fans can vote for Victorino online at www.phillies.com. The winners, chosen by online voting totals, will be announced on MLB.com shortly thereafter.

Well I voted for Shane SEVERAL times! :) The funny thing is that you can vote multiple times. If it wasn't for Shane hitting that last ball last night who knows what would have happened. I am too old for this kind of excitement at the bottom of the 9th! LOL!

I've been voting for both of them since yesterday morning - and last I heard, they were both in the lead. BTW, they are referred to as Bran Torino, a play on both their names.

From MLB.com -
After nearly four days of furious voting and lead changes, we're down to the final two hours of the record-setting 2009 All-Star Game Sprint Final Vote. Both races remain up-for-grabs as the 4 p.m. ET deadline approaches with Phillies outfielder Shane Victorino and Tigers third baseman Brandon Inge still holding on to leads, so every single vote of the millions being cast matters.

Brandon Inge and Shane Victorino, known in certain circles as Bran-Torino, are headed for the All Star Game next week.

"Bran-Torino" is now a joy ride.

Tigers third baseman Brandon Inge and Phillies center fielder Shane Victorino are your choices in the dramatic 2009 All-Star Game Sprint Final Vote, comeback survivors of the closest overall balloting in the history of a four-day event that decided the 33rd and final roster spots for the 80th All-Star Game on July 14 at Busch Stadium.

Fans smashed MLB.com Final Vote records and ultimately they decided on the two first-time All-Stars whose respective clubs forged a voting alliance after seeing Inge and Victorino in second place on the second day. The Tigers and Phillies called it "Bran-Torino" and those two words would become campaign fixtures.

It was the first time in Final Vote history that two players won after trailing in each of the first two voting updates. The alliance unquestionably mattered, as fans in Detroit voted heavily for Victorino and fans in Philadelphia did the same for Inge.

I love baseball - I love all the stats.

Once again, the American League has won the All-Star Game. This was the shortest game (2 hours, 31 minutes) since 1988.

Did you know that in post-season play, Mariano Rivera has given up 10 runs in 117 1/3 innings? That's the equivalent of 10 runs in 13 complete games.

Did I mention - I love baseball?

Interesting turn of events. Not sure how I feel about this - except that Dante Stallworth, NFL, runs down a guy with his car; does 30 days (?), and then will be back playing ball. Ray Lewis does time in prison - he's back playing.

From ESPN -

MLB commissioner Bud Selig appears to be "seriously considering" reinstatement for Pete Rose nearly 20 years after the hit king was banned from baseball for gambling on the sport, according to a report in the New York Daily News.

Olney Pete Rose was a great player with a unique place in MLB history. But his tarnished legacy won't be affected one way or another by his inclusion in the Hall of Fame, Buster Olney writes. Blog » Insider

Hank Aaron's support for Rose's Hall of Fame inclusion, which he mentioned at this weekend's ceremonies in Cooperstown, N.Y., is a strong indication of Selig's possible action, the Daily News reported.

"I would like to see Pete in," Aaron said. "He belongs there."

Lobbying for the move began five years ago but died when Selig became convinced Rose was not "reconfiguring" his life, the newspaper report said, part of the late commissioner Bart Giamatti's demands on Rose when he was ruled ineligible.

"I think a lot of the guys feel that it's been 20 years now for Pete, and would lean toward leniency and time served," an unnamed Hall of Famer said, according to the Daily News. "If he had admitted it in the first place and apologized way back then, he'd probably be in the Hall by now."

If Rose were to become eligible, it stands to reason he would have to be voted into the Hall of Fame by the 65 living members who make up the Veterans Committee.

Inclusion on the writers' ballot expires after 15 years, though Rose has never appeared on their ballot except by write-in. During his first year of eligibility, Rose received 41 write-in votes.

"I know there are still guys who feel strongly against him," said another Hall of Famer, according to the report. "And I don't know if that would change even if Selig clears him."

From Yahoo Sports -

MILWAUKEE – Washington's Josh Willingham has hit two grand slams against the Milwaukee Brewers, becoming the 13th major leaguer to do it and first since 2003.

Willingham's first grand slam Monday night came with two outs in the fifth inning and capped a six-run inning for the Nationals when he drove the first pitch from Jeff Suppan over the left-center field wall to make it 6-2.

In Willingham's next at-bat in the sixth against reliever Mark DiFelice, he homered well over the Brewers' bullpen to give the Nationals a 13-5 lead.

Willingham's eight RBIs are a Nationals record and tied the franchise record for the former Montreal Expos.

The last time a player hit two slams in a game was Bill Mueller for Boston on July 29, 2003, against Texas.

The Pete Rose thing?

They proved that he did bet on games. Now, did they ever nail him for fixing games?

Theoretically, you can lose a game to cover a points spread, but I don't remember him ever being accused of that.

They let the home run record stand - broken by an alledged steroid user-
And who owns the season record for homers?

So, we have cheaters on the field who have left a 'legacy' on the field and then a bobo who gained his shame off the field- so where does that put us?

Not a Rose fan, nor a Bonds fan. These two are not a good role models or good spokespeople for the game.

Going back to the Manny steroids thing?

I posted that people in El Lay don't care about the players, they care about the stats.

Look at the setup here?

The left field section is "mannywood" they sell the dreadlock wigs at 25 a pop, you can go to a game with a buddy for '99' dollars. All things manny are sacred.

The management made the 'MR' disappear for a while then brought him back with fanfare and song and dance. The McCourts know that MR still had golden eggs to produce, that is why they took such a low profile during the whole incident.

Bad enough bringing a player into the fold, then having him crash and burn.
I'd love to have seen that happen in the midwest or anywhere baseball is spoken.

Every spring, I get all 'baseball giddy' then someone just effs it up for me.

I go back to watching the game. I don't need a score card, I look at some kid wearing the team numbers that belonged to some player that's long retired and I want to go back to when BB was fun.

Pete Rose was fun, I disliked him because he beat up my teams. Now, he's some old retired player that did it hard, and was always crashing into things.

He played the game.

Then you have people that played games to play the game.

Only God knows who did what and he ain't telling!

The Pirates are losing. Any Pirate player who gets to be a star on the Pirates gets traded! Yesterday, Jack Wilson and Ian Snell were traded to Seattle for some minor leaguers and now last night I hear that Freddie Sanchez was traded to San Francisco! Nyjer Morgan gets going good and HE's traded to Washington with Adam LaRoche going to Boston. I can understand a team rebuilding itself, but the Buccos have taken it to a new level! It's a good way to guarantee more losing seasons.

Okay - off the top of my head without googling. And you said player, not batter.

1. Single
2. Walk
3. HBP
4. Sent in as a pinch runner
5. Fielder's choice
6. Reached on error

Now I have to come up with 2 more.

It's all too complicated for me I guess. I have trouble understanding how the commentators can instantly tell the difference between a slider, change-up or fast ball. My feeble eyes can't see that as the ball goes whizzing by. I guess I am just a blissfully ignorant fan. :p

Grace

Pam, I can't tell one pitch from another most of the time. When there is a game from Fenway, broadcast by NESN, it is sometimes easier. Fenway is one of 3 parks (no, I don't know the other 2), where there is a camera straight out from home plate. So when they show the pitch from there, it's easy to tell if it's a ball or strike, if it curves or slides.

The pitchers I find amazing are the ones who pitch sidearm.

#7 - catcher drops the ball after strike 3, and batter gets to 1st base before the ball does.

That situation just happened in the Red Sox - Yankee game. But the batter didn't make it to 1st before the ball.

It's called a "dropped third strike" in order for the strike to count, the catcher has to catch the third strike cleanly. Otherwise the batter can advance to first......

Detroit playing Boston. Score now tied 3-3.

OLD BRAWL GAME (7:55 p.m.)

Kevin Youkilis has just been ejected from the game for charging the mound after being hit by a pitch from Rick Porcello. Obviously, there has been quite a it brewing between these teams since last night, when three batters were hit, including Youkilis. Youkilis now has been hit 10 times this year, placing him among the league leaders.

Rick Porcello also was ejected, much to his displeasure and that of Tigers manager Jim Leyland. Porcello had hit one batter all season prior to the incident. Remember that he also brushed back Victor Martinez in the first.

Chris Lambert is on to pitch for the Tigers. Mike Lowell has entered the game for Youkilis.

Francona just now got thrown out. Wonder if anyone will be left in the 9th? Maybe the bat boy and ball girl . . . . . . .

I was blown away last night at the idiotic Cubs fan who tossed beer all over Shane Victorino as he was catching a fly ball (which he still caught  ). After the game Shane said he sort of had to admire the fan because his timing was so perfect. He got him good, including his eye. What a jerk! Of course, the game was beyond awesome (12-5)! Don't mess with my Phils! ;)

I'm SO happy that I didn't see the game? yesterday between the Pirates and the Cubs. It was a 17-2 massacre brought to you by the very young Pirates. You know they're young when their oldest player is only 33 years old! I love the way the Pirate front office traded away the experienced players that could have helped them. I guess Pittsburgh will have only two championships this year.

But David, these are the Cubs we are talking about here. One big win, but look at the big picture -this is the team that hasn't won a World Series since 1908. The Cubs are six games behind St. Louis in the NL Central right now. Lou is not happy.

Home of the stupid fan who dumped a beer on the visiting team's outfielder (can you say unsportsmanlike conduct?). Nice move ya big doofus. We just got over Bartman and now this.

Grace

That's easy 'cause it happened yesterday. From the Phillies - Eric Bruntlett.

Did you also know that his was only the 15th in MLB history? And only the 2nd to end a game. The first one to end a game was back in 1927; that player was Johnny Neun of the Detroit Tigers.

He has a wonderful attitude about everything. And he is much loved by everyone who was ever within the sound of his voice.

Ernie greeted each new baseball season with a verse from Song of Solomon -

For, lo, the winter is past,
The rain is over and gone;
The flowers appear on the earth;
The time of the singing of birds is come,
And the voice of the turtle is heard in our land.

Jeter has tied Lou Gehrig's mark of 2,721 hits in a Yankees uniform. This record has stood for 70 years.

The Yankees are off tomorrow, but look for him to break the record on Friday, at the Stadium, against Baltimore.

At least it is Jeter, who likely will spend his career as a Yankee.

A really good article about Ernie (http://www.freep.com/article/20090917/COL08/909170590/1050/SPORTS02/Bless-you--Ernie) from this morning's Freep.

An FYI - In 1948, Harwell became the only announcer in baseball history to be traded for a player when the Brooklyn Dodgers' general manager, Branch Rickey, traded catcher Cliff Dapper to the Crackers in exchange for breaking Harwell's broadcasting contract. (Harwell was brought to Brooklyn to substitute for regular Dodger announcer Red Barber, who was hospitalized with a bleeding ulcer.)

Hate New York City
It's cold and it's damp
And all the people dressed like monkeys
Let's leave Chicago to the Eskimos
That town's a little bit too rugged
For you and me you bad girl

Rollin' down the Imperial Highway
With a big nasty redhead at my side
Santa Ana winds blowin' hot from the north
And we were born to ride

Roll down the window put down the top
Crank up the Beach Boys baby
Don't let the music stop
We're gonna ride it till we just can't ride it no more

From the South Bay to the Valley
From the West Side to the East Side
Everybody's very happy
'Cause the sun is shining all the time
Looks like another perfect day

I love L.A. (We love it)
I love L.A. (We love it)

Look at that mountain
Look at those trees
Look at that bum over there, man
He's down on his knees
Look at these women
There ain't nothin' like 'em nowhere

Century Boulevard (We love it)
Victory Boulevard (We love it)
Santa Monica Boulevard (We love it)
Sixth Street (We love it, we love it)

I love L.A.
I love L.A.

I like to listen to the games on the radio while I work. It makes the time go by quickly and it's theater of the mind. The games are broadcast on ESPN -Rick Sutcliffe and Chris Berman are doing the Phil/Colo series.

Does Berman ever shut up? I put up with it yesterday and almost put a screwdriver in my temple during today's game....

He's the most obnoxious idiot that I have ever heard doing baseball. It's tiring listening to him try to make foul balls sound like homeruns.

He has no social redemptory value.

Ellie - my thoughts exactly! I didn't stay up to watch and this morning at 5:00AM I woke up wondering. I told myself to go back to sleep but I couldn't stand it. I stumbled through the darkness to get to my computer and go to www.Phillies.com. Then I was so happy that I couldn't go back to sleep. Thank God this game will be earlier.

The hubby was wiser than I. He took a little afternoon nap yesterday in order to stay up but he said he did doze a bit. He woke up to see Brad Lidge pitching again and got worried, but thank God he made the save. :)

Hmmmm,

This was inevitable-I was listening to a local radio show where the little missus was doing an interview as the CEO of the team.

The radio host began to comment on her arms-she's very proud of them and swims miles every day to keep them in shape!-she started to flirt with the hosts and it was pretty apparent then that things weren't right in her marriage. If that radio interview didn't end the marriage? I'd say that FM is a wussy of the grandest type.

If it had been a male CEO doing the interview that way? He would have had his bits trimmed, cleaned and hung on a wall as a trophy.

She's a smart, tough as nails bee yotch that knows exactly what side the bread is buttered on.

P.S. Check out the photos you will see of her.
Those tanned guns are always on display!;):D

-----------------------

The local ESPN outlet did a little speculation about the split during the p.m. show and they hinted at the turmoil with in the org. One radio host said that working for the team was pretty bad and people are ready to jump ship..

THis is one of the stupidest decisions the team has ever made-why would you make a statement about the split on the eve of a playoff appearance? Put a fork in them, the media will start to ask how it will affect the team.......

Nah, no teasing. The Dodgers put up a good game. It was very exciting to watch although I must admit that my palms do get sweaty especially when Manny walks up to the plate.

Cole probably had his mind on his little newborn baby boy 3,000 miles away. :p It looks like maybe Brad Lidge is returning to his former self. (Where is a crossed finger icon when you need one? :p )
