Earlier in the year most of the hermits went underground. Since then, we lost one, and gained two more itty bitty ones (Roscoe and Bear). And last night, Aang popped back up looking nice and colorful!

Six have been topside in the past couple of days, one is still MIA. The tank could really use a deep clean, but I don't dare disturb anyone that may be molting.

And what's a thread without pics! :D

Aang before:

Aang after:
(and being undecisive - he molted in the dark shell, moved into the tan one, pushed Momo over multiple times when Momo came by to check out the dark shell, moved back into the dark shell, then moved back into the tan one.)

Rolling around the old shell

Those little Hermits are more powerful than they appear. One of them pinched Kim's hand once and it literally almost brought her to tears, it hurt so much. Hence, I don't hold them, I just like looking at them move around.

You and Alyssa have both gotten me interested in these little guys! They seem so neat, and I always love seeing pictures of them. :-)

I always had heard that hermits would not change shells so openly (obviously, I know next to nothing about them); I found the shell-choosing pictures to be really fascinating.

Thanks for sharing!

Wow, Aang looks great! :D What a spiffeh shell you got there ^^ He's so cute LOL. I've never watched them change shells before, mine always seem to do it at night and then I panick when I pick up their old shell to find they changed in one night. How long does it take for them to get in? Very cool pics!! I love their names :D

How many do you have in total?

Thanks guys. :D

Oyster, it depends on the hermit. They each really do have their own personalities. Some will let you watch, others will retreat into their shell until they have privacy.

They are more active at night, but I work evenings (5 p.m. to 1 a.m.) so usually by the time I get home, they are out and about. So I'll spend some time watching them before I go to bed.

As for shell shopping, sometimes it takes only a few minutes and other times it can take nearly a half an hour before they move into the shell. The process of them moving is very fast. What takes so long is them deciding if they want to move or not. I've had crabs spend a very long time rolling a shell, feeling inside it, and then they just walk off. It can get frustrating.
