Please keep your fingers crossed that the specialist will find a quick, easy fix to Taz's kidney cyst problem we've been having.

He is just so grumpy. He hates Paizly anymore. Growls and hisses at her if she even looks at him from across the room or all the way down the hall! Then other times he's totally fine with her presence.
Other than that he is acting normal. But we all know how cats are. :)

Thanks! :D

I apologize for not updating sooner. But I just brought Taz home. I had to leave him for some bloodwork and an ultrasound. Then an emergency came in and they "forgot" to call me. I called them after almost 3 hours.

Anyway, he has LOTS of fluid around his kidneys. And his kidneys are abnormal looking. Basically if I do not have surgery to remove the psuedocysts, kidney failure will progress probably quickly and fatally. However, even if we do remove the cysts he can (and probably will) still continue with the kidney disease. She cannot guarantee that removing them would slow down that process. There is just no telling. She said if it were her cat she'd do the surgery. About 4 months ago she had a 14 year old cat that also had the psuedocysts and came through surgery fine. So that made me feel a little better. What I am not feeling so good about is how abnormal looking his kidneys are. But she said the look of them doesn't matter as much as the numbers (BUN and creatine). And his are slowly, very slowly, going higher. Having him on the k/d food should help slow that process down (hopefully).

So she is going to call me tomorrow with the results of the bloodwork. Which he just had bloodwork done at the end of Sept. I can't imagine them being much different, considering they weren't different from March to Sept. Anyway, we will set up the surgery when she calls tomorrow.

Sigh. I don't like this. :(

Thank you for keeping us in your thoughts. I really appreciate it. :)

Medusa
11-06-2008, 08:03 PM
Take heart, sweetie. Puddy's kidneys looked bad, too, and she had renal failure for 6 years before she finally went to the Bridge. Her remaining kidney was supposed to look like, well, a kidney bean but hers looked like a shriveled up pea. She still lived for nearly 3 years after that, so be encouraged by what your vet said, that it doesn't matter what the kidneys look like but the numbers that should be your main concern. If you trust her judgment, then perhaps surgery would be the best option. Keep the faythe.

11-06-2008, 11:01 PM
I'm sorry you have such a big decision to make. :( It does sound like Taz is uncomfortable if he is grumpy and acting differently around Paizly. Maybe the surgery won't guarantee that the kidney disease won't progress but did the vet indicate that it might help him feel more comfortable?
Prayers that Taz will feel better whatever you decide.

Taz_Zoee
11-06-2008, 11:31 PM
The vet didn't even have to tell me he'd be more comfortable with the removal of the cysts. Looking at his ultrasound compared to another one she showed me in a book....it has GOT to be uncomfortable for him. The cysts are larger than the kidneys!
So surgery is basically my only choice. I can't leave him like this. While he "seems" to be fine, other than the grumpiness toward Paizly, he could be in pain or discomfort. But we know how our kitties are about showing signs of pain. I wouldn't have known these were bothering him if he hadn't stopped eating back in Sept. I don't want that to happen again either. He cannot lose any more weight.
I just hate the fact of surgery. He's only ever had surgery to remove one of his canine's a few years ago. AND he's never stayed over night at the vets before EVER in 13 years. Where he is having surgery is the same place that our DJ dog went to the bridge. :( That scares me too.

Thank you Mary, Kim and Lara (I think that's your name, Emeraldgreen:)). :D

Oh dear. My thoughts are surely with you and Taz. Do you have any idea how much the surgery will cost? Please give him some lovies from me. I do hope that the surgery helps him feel better and live a long and fulfilling life!

Taz_Zoee
11-07-2008, 09:36 AM
Thanks Moesha. The surgery plus the things they did yesterday total over $4000. But I qualified for the CareCredit so I will make monthly payments. Whew! If I pay it within a certain period it is interest free. I don't know the details about the payments until after his surgery. And I will not be telling the BF how much it is either. He doesn't need to know, he's not paying for it. :)

Catty1
11-07-2008, 10:27 AM
Still, give a shout out if you want some $$ help. If I remember correctly, Care Credit is interest free if you pay it off within 3 months.

If BF or parents ask, you don't have to tell them the amount, but just say if they'd like to chip in a bit, that would be great. Just a suggestion. (And you may want to tell your vet AND the desk staff that NO ONE gets the cost amount but YOU, PERSONALLY...in case someone else phones. ;) )

Taz_Zoee
11-07-2008, 10:45 AM
Yes, the paperwork shows the amounts per month and it's interest free if paid off within 3 or 6 months. I guess I find out the details after the surgery. But I'll probably have to go the interest route, which isn't too bad.
Thanks for the offer, Candace, I think I'll be able to do it myself though. Slowly but surely. :) The CareCredit is a wonderful help.

I'm not that worried about anyone finding out the amount. And I know nobody will call to find out.

Thank you all! Yesterday I couldn't even think about next Thursday or I'd get tears in my eyes. But I've changed my way of thinking now and just picture him feeling so much better and actually playing with Paizly ALL the time. :)

I got to meet another PTer today. Kitten645 (Claudia). And she gave me a card for Taz, it's sooo sweet. Also, a mutual friend we have signed a little note to me on the back. I just love all the people that care so much about animals and share my love for them. :D :D

Actually, I don't think we did discuss that. But she said if I had any questions before Thursday to just call. She works Tuesday, so maybe I'll call and ask that. I probably won't see the doctor Thursday morning when I drop him off.
But she did mention the pain killer patches. I've never seen those before.
Thanks Candace! :D

Well, while I was getting ready this morning I felt HORRIBLE that I couldn't feed him. Then my friend/co-worker texted me and almost made me cry. I was very teary eyed on the way to the vet. Then I was okay once I got there. So I'm doing better so far.
Now, I might have to leave work early to take Taggart to the vet. He has kennel cough. When it rains it pours, right? :(

Positive thoughts going out for Taz and Taggert too! You KNOW I KNOW how hard it is not to feed them in the morning. Did Taz open his mouth real wide to remind you? LOL! :) As for "when it rains,it pours"...We have had 1 emergency vet visit for Bean, Moon's teeth cleaned/extracted and Sunny had been to the vet around 6 times all in the past 2 months. I have to remember to ask my vets which colleges they want me to send their kids to. :D

Taz_Zoee
11-13-2008, 03:34 PM
LOL, no he didn't open his mouth like that. He just would run in front of me toward his feeding area meowing. And when I didn't follow he'd come back and meow at me some more. :(

UPDATE: The vet just called and he came through surgery just fine. :D They are going to send the capsules out to be evaluated. I did ask about the possibilities of cancer and she said she's 99.9999999% sure it's not cancer. She said if he keeps doing as well as he is now that he might get to go home in the morning. Woo Hoo!! This will still be a long night though.

Oh, the doctor also told me her Golden has to have surgery tomorrow too. They found a thyroid tumor in her throat. She was having a MRI for something else when they found it. So the fact that they found it soon is a good thing. I'll be thinking of them tomorrow.

Oh yeah, Candace, I forgot to mention that I did ask this morning when I dropped him off how the incision(s) would be. She said one incision approx 3 to 4 inches. This was the vet tech and it's what she "thought". So I guess I'll see when he gets home tomorrow. :D I'm so excited!!! (but still a little nervous too)
I will have to get the room ready for him tonight, because Bruce will probably be picking him up for me. My supervisor will not be in tomorrow, so I have to be here.

Yes, they cough. And it's a gagging sounding cough. He started it last night. Because I let him sleep on the big bed with us...hee hee:). She slept right between us with his head the same direction as ours. And I could hear a little congestion in his nose and of course the cough. He has also been sneezing quite a bit. Great news about Taz...you have your hands full with those critters this week don't you?

That's for sure. Then last night I heard Zoee make a weird noise. It was like a cough but held inside. Like she just didn't open her mouth. I was like awww man, here we go already. But she only did it the once, so there's still a glimmer of hope there.
I have to look into the Bordatella shot and see how long it lasts.

Anyway, I am anxiously waiting for the doctor to call and say Taz can come home! :D :D

Oh, I had a dream that Taz was already home this morning when I got up. I was like - how did he get home? And then I guess we figured he came home on his own. LOL Dreams can be so weird. But he was happy to be home in my dream. :D

He's home!!! (But I'm not:()
Bruce said he is one pi$$ed kitty. He was doing the meow/growl on the way home.
They gave him a soft collar, at my request. We'll see how that goes.

I'll take some pictures of him tonight or this weekend (if he'll let me).

Thank you so much for all the kind thoughts and prayers. It means so much to me. :D :D

Well, I came to give an update. But I'm still trying to see through my tears after reading Katie's thread. :(

So I'll be brief and update more over the weekend. I saw him for about 5 minutes when I first got home. He seemed VERY happy to see me. It took a minute but I got him purring. Then he followed me while I read his paperwork from the vet and was rubbing against me, as best he could with the collar on.
I had to go feed the dogs and when I went back in he was hiding under the bed and would NOT come out. I kept talking to him telling him if he came out I'd take the collar off while I was with him for a break.
We went to dinner and when I got back he came out to see me again. I took his collar off and let him clean himself. I literally sat 6 inches from him while he cleaned and if he even got close to the incision I'd stop him. Oh, the looks he gave me...... I could only imagine what he was thinking.
OH, I gave him the medicine and he sat there like he was waiting for it. LOL Then I realized they only gave me enough for one dose. So I have to call tomorrow to get more. Unless they don't want him to have more.
The incision is about 4 to 5 inches long and has about 12 staples in it. So we have to go back in 10 - 14 days to remove them.

Ok, this is enough for now. More coming later and maybe even some pix.:)

Cindy, thank you for caring about Andy when you have a pitiful boy on your hands too.

Sorry I did not post earlier, I know you understand though.

I am SO glad Taz is home, and that he looks ok. Thats alot of staples! Poor guy, it is so hard when we must vet them, isnt it?

I can only imagine what he was thinking when you would not let him lick his ouchies, but he will forget soon enough!

I dont know about the meds? I thought they got pain meds for about 3 days?
I just always request it, and have never had any problems. Maybe his age had something to do with it.

I will look for the pictures, and I am so glad he purred for you. Cats are so special!

Prayers still going out to my favorite old fella Taz, and I pray he heals up quickly and perfectly!

So I called the vet to ask about the meds. The girl I spoke to was in San Mateo, not the Concord office. She had to contact the Concord office and then get back to me. She calls me back after she looked up his chart and asked if I gave him 1cc. NO! I think I can read. I gave him between .1 and .2cc. She wanted to make sure I didn't overdose him. Geez, Bruce said the exact same thing last night.
So I went to the vet to pick up more meds and the nurse had syringes already full of the exact dosage. Why is everyone thinking I'm overdosing my damn cat!?! This hurt my feelings. They don't realize that Taz is my BABY.
Anyway, I've got more meds in case he needs it. I just want him to be comfortable. He's already irritated and keeps trying to come out of the room, but I don't want him running around out here.
He loves it when I take his collar off and let him clean his face and paws. I only leave it off of him while I'm right there with him so I can make sure he doesn't lick the incision. Last night he was Mr Sneaky and was licking on the other side of his leg where I couldn't see. Brat! :p
Oh, he was hissing at Paizly under the bedroom door. :( I guess it will be like starting all over again with the two of them once Taz is all healed up. That's okay though. My little man is going to be okay!!! :D :D

And I do owe a ton of HUGE thank you's to everyone here on PT for helping me through this. :)

They're probably just protecting themselves by measuring it out for you. Actually, I'm always thankful when they do that for me. Saves me the work and my eyesight, too. LOL I understand why you feel the way you do, though. Most importantly, Taz is on the mend. :D

I'm so glad to hear that he's home now.:) My Storm is always very grumpy after he's been to the vet too. My vet's office actually marks the syringe with a red marker so that I'll know exactly how much medicine to give my furkids. I think it's a great idea. I hope that Taz heals up quickly and that his incision area doesn't become too itchy or uncomfortable.

Ok, here are a few pictures of my little man.
Please excuse the dirty floors in them, I've been preoccupied with him and Taggart this week. :o

So here is a good one of his belly. Sorry it's dark. The incision is hiding under that fold of skin there in the middle. LOL

I let him out to the rest of the house while the dogs were outside this afternoon. He was wanting to get out of that room for a while.

He looks great considering what he's been through.:) Starr had the same kind of e-collar but ended up tearing his up. Some of my other cats were afraid of it too. They thought he looked weird. What does Paizly think of it?

Actually Paizly hasn't seen him with it on. She hasn't really seen him at all. He is confined to the bedroom and when he was out today Paizly was snoozing in the "doghouse" (a spare room off the studio).

At night Paizly goes in her bedroom, Taggart goes in the kennel (which is in our bedroom/Taz's room) and Taz and Zoee get to share the big bed with us. Which is the original way it was, so that's good. :) Eventually Taggart will get to sleep out of the kennel, but not until he's 110% potty trained.
Zoee has seen Taz with the collar on and was very curious. That is until Taz swatted at her. LOL

And yes, Mary, I am much more relaxed now. :D I will be completely relaxed once he gets the staples out. I'm paranoid of the incision getting infected like Paizly's spay incision did. I also hate him having to wear that collar. :( It breaks my heart to see him slink around and bump into things. But the soft collar is MUCH better than the hard plastic ones.

ETA: I am home alone (well without other human) and so I can't be in the bedroom with Taz to let him have the collar off and in the other part of the house with Taggart to avoid any potty accidents. So I let Taz out of the room with the collar on. Paizly hissed a hiss at him like I've never heard from her. She sorta honked at him. I am pretty sure it was because of the collar.

This might take awhile! lol Jimmy had his tummy shaved for an ultrasound months ago and it's still not all grown in yet. :0)

Taz looks really good and I'm so glad he is home. I've never seen a collar like that one. We still have those awkward plastic cones here at my vet. Are they expensive? It looks like it is made out of vinyl or something? It's such a better design than the cone because it must make eating so much easier.

Catty1

Thanks everyone! :D He is doing so well. I'm only giving him the meds once a day. The last time I gave it to him most of it missed, but I didn't want to do another dose just in case. He'll be fine until tomorrow. Maybe I'll give him one before I go to work.

The collar is made out of a strong nylon material. Sorta like a gym bag or backpack would be made from. It is very nice for him. It lays down so he can still squeeze under the bed and it doesn't hinder eating or drinking. But it does stop him from getting to the incision. :D
I had to request the soft collar. They would have just given me the regular hard plastic one. He didn't fight me the first couple of days to put it on but now he sorta fights against it. But doesn't run away from me, which is good. I just feel bad that next week while I'm at work he'll have to stay in the collar ALL day. I will ask Bruce to give him time out of it if he can. But he works from home and wouldn't be able to watch him as closely (as I'd like him to) while it's off.
Shouldn't it be pretty well healed up here in a couple of days? It looks very good. I did notice a small area where it looked like blood seeped through, but it looks good today. I'm still paranoid of infection.

I'm glad to hear that he's doing so well.:) I've always left the e-collars on my furkids until they had their stitches out just to be on the safe side. Poor Storm had to wear the ugly plastic kind because back then I didn't even know about the soft kind. Good luck.:)

I think he's getting used to it. Although, last night he fought me hard to not get it put back on. I look at that as a good thing. It means he's feeling better. :D

Thanks for asking about Taz, Moe. He is actually doing VERY well. The spark is back in his eyes. He is running around the house (which I'm still trying to limit until he gets his staples out). He is still wearing the collar when I can't supervise him.

The doctor called yesterday and said the results from the capsules were fine. There was some inflammation (and something else that I can't remember) but nothing to be worried about. She wants me to get his levels checked in a few months to make sure his kidney #'s do not increase drastically. I don't think they will because they have been pretty consistent for the past couple of years. Or I HOPE they don't. :)

I am anxiously waiting for Monday so Taz can have his full freedom back. :D

This is true. BUT, he only hisses and growls at Paizly. He is fine with Zoee and Taggart. As long as they don't get too close. But with Paizly she can be 10 feet away from him, not even paying him any attention and he is throwing a fit. Maybe things will calm down.
