I'm going to the seminar to become a animal shelter volunteer!! :D My sister, mom, and I are all doing it together, plus I need community service and a project for my Ag leadership class at school. We have these things called SAE's(supervised agriculutral experiment) and this is going to be my project, I have to document my hours and all that stuff, but I'm super excited for this!! I've ALWAYS wanted to be a volunteer at the shelter, and my mom is going to totally *cave* and we're going to wind up with a dog. I know it! :D I'll keep you updated on this.

Sounds good! All of the shelters around me are full with volunteers so they're not talking any more or I would be too.

You are going to have so much fun! I love working at the shelter. I call it a shelter, but it's more of a rescue organization. They rescue animals from local shelters that are scheduled to be euthanized. And the animals are in condos, not cages.
Anyway, can't wait to hear about your experiences. :D And I'll be hoping mom caves in for a doggie too. ;)

That's how we got Kaedyn! I was volunteering for school hours and found my grumpy old man!

Have fun! It's a blast volunteering at a shelter!

A Pt'er didn't cave? Wow, LOL. That's a shock to me. I thought that's how you got Casey? :o Well, my mom can't stand seeing animals in cages, she refuses to go to petstores who sell dogs. She caved so fast for Max, but it obviously didn't work out with that, so I know she'll cave for another dog. It'll probably the one that needs the most excersice, sheds the most, etc knowing her. And we were NEVER getting another pet after Sassy, remember that? :D Ohh, she'll cave at least for fostering and then with that she'll eventually adopt the dog. I KNOW her so well, haha.

Thanks guys! I'll be sure to tell you of my experiences!

I did rescue Casey from a shelter but by the time we volunteered we had the two and that was enough. There was a female pitbull that we were really tempted by but her and casey would just have not gotten along I just knew it There was a kitty that my daughter cried for and truth be told if it didn't get adopted real quick I probably would have caved but 2 dogs, a cat and 2 teenagers is all I can handle right now.

Luckily the shelter we were at was pretty much no kill, I would have been in trouble if it wasn't.

That would be dangerous for me. LOL Are you ever going to have the stories to share! Good luck and best wishes. The animals are going to love you for it. :)

Well, we just got back from the orentation and it went great!! The lady was really excited to see me and my friend Alexa getting involved so young at the shelter. We signed up for a Cat socialization meeting this Sunday and the Dog walking meeting NEXT saturday! :D

Oh, and guess who signed up for fostering kittens and puppies? You guessed it, my mom!! Me and my sister talked her into it. Oh and guess who's going to be a FOSTER FAILURE? ;) We are very excited. We don't get the puppies till January though, but that's okay. We have them for about ten days but love will develope, trust me. :)

omg how exciting, Alyssa!! I'm thrilled for you! I've always wanted to volunteer at the shelter near our area, but it's just way too far.
I hope this foster failure thing works out for you!:D:love:

You are going to have so much fun doing this. I absolutely LOVE it. In fact, this weekend I'm not sceduled to volunteer but I'm thinking I'm going to go down and hang out anyway. But that will depend on how Taz is doing.

Yeesh. I must have a heart of stone. I never caved or even attempted to cave EXCEPT when that one, lone, purebred female dobie landed herself at our shelter (it's basically the city pound). I don't know if everybody knows the story, but I tried to adopt her but somebody took her the day before. Sigh. And then I found Ivy :p

I don't know. I think you get desensitized to it all after awhile :p Or maybe I just have a heart of stone. Have fun!!!! I love volunteering because it gives me the chance to work with a wide variety of dogs w/ behavioral issues, and all that experience makes me a much better owner/trainer for Ivy.

Good for you, Alyssa! It sounds great. I know you will have a good time, and you be able to make the shelter experience a little less stressful for some of the animals.

I have some pics for you guys =) This is my first time at the shelter in a LONG time. I haven't been there since I was around 6-7. So anyway, we went for our Cat Socialization training. The shelter is in complete chaos because they are working on a $5 million renovation right now and it's almost done. Everyone is cramped in the 5 rooms they have, it's really not a good enviorment for the animals but they do try their best. It's fairly clean, if someone pees on the floor it's cleaned up ASAP. It's just stressful because the cats can hear the dogs barking, and they are not taken out to often, so they have a system where they have a clipboard and it says who hasn't gotten much attention this week. You're supposed to mark it when you give one attention and give the ones who had no attention some. There was a 9 year old cat named Mrs. kitty. She was such a pretty girl and very sweet and she hadn't gotten any loving so I of course took her out. What a purr machine LOL!

So anyway onto the pics-

Sorry the pics are so weird looking. Anyway, I love it! I can't wait to walk the dogs, I can't do that until I go to the dog walking meeting which will be soon. The renovation is going to make EVERYONE much happier!! The cats will hardly be caged, they will have indoor/outdoor access. The dogs will have large airy kennels, and a nice field to play in, and the birds/rabbits/and gerbils WON'T have to be on top of the cats cages. I got scratched by a cat named Else, but it wasn't something I'd report, because they are all in such a stressful enviorment and I don't blame them for being so nervous. I love them all, but I really liked Mrs.Kitty =)
