I don't like this at all! I know they are just trying to keep the groups from getting too big, but I don't agree with this!

For example... The Swedish Vallhund is a HERDING dog! They herd!

The Standard Poodle is NOT a companion! They are retrievers!

The Akita, Samoyed, Alaskan Malamute, Siberian Husky, etc all had jobs! They are working dogs! Yes, they come from the north, but they are WORKING dogs!

I really hope this doesn't pass!

I agree with you, lute. I am not too fond of it either. I liked our division by function. And I really do not like the Group title of Northern breeds, although I must quite biasedly that I think they are the most beautiful dogs in the show ;) they are not really related in form or function.

I am also surprised to see the number of breed clubs that have applied for admission to the AKC. For example, I love the Leonberger, and will love getting to see them when I go to shows, but I am surprised that the parent club would have wanted admission to the AKC.

Um, where does the Dalmatian fit in? They are essentially the everything dog, a jack of all trades.

Oh, never mind, I like how they are in working. I always thought the fact that they are in the non sporting group was still from 100 years ago where anything that wasn't it the sporting group was thrown into the non sporting, and they were never moved out.

The person who posted this on another board said this about it

This is in stone now.....it has passed the AKC Board and is a done deal......according to the delegate it could go into effect as early as 6 months....just depends on how soon they get it set up. Lots has to be set up behind the scenes too I am sure. Such as computer programs, superintendents, etc.

I like how the shar pei is now a northern breed.... lol umm yeah...

I also agree that the swedish valhund belongs in the herding group. I dunno... will be weird getting used to it. Will also be weird for those who show in AKC and CKC, which as far as I know hasn't changed at all.

It did already pass?!?! I heard about this about 4 months ago at a show. No one thought they would actually do it. AKC has really turned upside down.:(

Illogical, as expected, IMO.

My two cents worth ....

I can see the logic intended behind dividing the sporting and hound groups. Not sure it was necessary, but at least it shows some logic.

The working group has always baffled me, and continues to do so. Working at what, exactly? Guarding? What about the dalmatian? And a lot of the "working" dogs are actually herding dogs.

And the toy and companion groups ... oh wow. Makes NO sense. A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a toy ... but a Bichon Frise or a French Bulldog is not? What? Why not just call them all companion dogs?

And why not call "Northern" group the "Spitz" group? Asian breeds are not "northern" ... but are spitz descendants, generally. But the shar pei??? I can see a team of shar pei running the Idiarod, eh? LMAO.

Where does the Xolo fit into this? They will be recognized next year. What group will they be in? Companion?!?!

I just hate the fact that AKC is dividing groups by looks instead of what they were bred to do. I agree, the only plus to this is the Dal being placed in the working group. They were pretty much working dog.

Another thing I want to know. What about rankings? Will the dog that is # 1 in it's group STILL be #1 if it is moved to another group??? Getting to that ranking is hard enough and takes a great amount of time, patients, and money. What if the new group has dogs with many more points? Will this dog have to go out and special more to try and get that spot back?
