As a first time dog owner (and loving every minute of it), I was wondering why dogs drops their coats when it's closer to winter. My border collie mix, Mickey, is dropping her's currently as she has done for the last 3 years I've had her. I would have thought they would drop them as it gets warmer instead. Do all dogs drop or just certain breeds? Just curious.

Just certain breeds. What they are doing is shedding the lighter coat they have in the summer, and growing in underneath that a denser, warmer coat that they'll keep all winter.

Mine had a shedding period in September and are now growing their winter coats so hardly no hair around lately, and easy to brush.
