Ty and the gang travel to Holt, Michigan, to rescue a widow and her three young sons from their crumbling 148-year-old house.

*edit* Photos Post #24 :)

*edit* Photos and Story Post #28

*edit* Photos and Video Post #38

The Nickless Family in Holt, MI was just chosen this past Friday to get a new home courtesy of Extreme Makeover. :D

I signed up via Cooley to volunteer and I'm scheduled to work this Thursday from 6 a.m. to Noon. I'm not sure what I'll be doing, but I'm sure it'll be a great experience none the less. :)

Photos are allowed anywhere except inside the house, so I'll be sure to snap some. :D

On September 26, “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” will be traveling to Holt, Michigan, to tell the Nickless family that their 1860’s farmhouse will be remodeled in only seven days! After husband Tim Nickless passed away in January, Arlene and her three sons were left to fend for themselves in the dilapidated home. Therefore, Ty and his designers will rebuild the Nickless’ home to help them eventually rebuild their own lives after their tragic loss.

Tim Nickless was a true Renaissance man. This loving husband and father to three young boys was not only a respected nurse devoted to his patients but also a gifted craftsman, mentor and environmentalist. As president of the Lansing Area Flying Aces model airplane club, and a member of the Arbor Day Society, Tim had a lust for life and a love for all things living. However after a painful 7-year battle with Hepatitis C, Tim died on January 19, 2008. Arlene and her three boys are now on their own in a 148-year-old farmhouse that is in dire need of repairs. Its walls, floors, and foundation are deteriorating, and the old wiring is a fire hazard. Had he survived, Tim would have and could have turned this dilapidated house into their dream home. It is now up to Ty and his designers to do just that, for with Tim’s untimely passing, Arlene and the boys are desperate for help.

Spectators are encouraged so come on out and cheer the builders and volunteers on.

(As an aside, my wedding reception was held in Holt. It's a nice little town about a half hour north of where I grew up.)

Kimmy that's awesome! I LOVE LOVE that show!!! Some of the stories that these families have to share are so sad, and it's so awesome that they get these brand new, gorgeous homes. Take pictures!!!:):D

Very cool! Extreme Home Makeover was here in Toledo a week or so ago, and did a house about a mile from us, a well as the fire station in our neighborhood. I didn't makeit over to watch at all, but my sister inlaw volunteered. Have fun!

I can't wait to hear how it goes. Enjoy and keep us posted!!:D

Went out to the site today as a spectator. Of course the batteries in the camera died when I got there.  :(

I'm amazed at how fast this house has gone up. From the front, it appears to be completely done outside. Roof on, siding on, windows in. They were working on the trim around the windows and you could hear them working inside.

The house is gorgeous. Two story, siding in this pretty green, with stone on half of the lower portion.

I saw Michael and Eduardo. Michael pulled up in a pickup and waved at the crowd as he passed. Eduardo actually came up to the fence and signed autographs and posed for pictures. I was less than 5 feet from him. :D Probably should of reached out to shake his hand, but I moved out of the way for those that had working cameras.

Pretty neat. :)

AHhhhh!! I  this show. I never miss an episode! I usually end up bawling my eyes out, but I still love it.
Do you think you might be on TV? If so, what should we look for to see you?
That is so exciting!!! :D :D

Not sure if I'll be on TV or not. Probably not, but that's okay. :) All volunteers wear the blue shirts and hardhats so there is no way I could say to look for something to differentiate me from anyone else.

What color is the Hard Hat?
Cut out a BIG heart-shaped sticker, of a contrasting color, from a piece of
shelf paper ... *stick it* on the front of your Hard Hat! :p

Or wear a brightly colored Bandanna around your neck!

LOL! I wish. Actually the forms I signed state that nothing can be done to either the hardhats or shirts. Wouldn't want to get kicked off the site.

Bandanas, I'd have to double check about.

With masking tape put a big P on one "cheek" and a big T on the other "cheek". That's not doing anything to the shirt or the hat. ;) Of course you have to make sure to tuck in the shirt so we can see.....

How about a BRIGHT Yellow, long-sleeved Turtle Neck under the

AND, you'll need to make sure the Camera Guy doesn't mind taking
 Butt Shots of the pretty girls!

Somehow, I fear the "PT" stickers on the 'Rear End' are gonna be a
problem with 'management'. :p
Especially when ya turn tail, bend over, and show 'em off!

I must pre-empt this post with a correction. It was not Eduardo that I saw the other day, but the new designer, Rib Hillis.

So the group that is working on the MI site are Ty, Paige, Michael, Ed, and Rib.

Okay, so the story.

I arrive at check in at 5 a.m. as instructed. All goes smoothly. I make friends with a woman that works at Sparrow Hospital named Danielle. A coordinator snags 8 volunteers out of the 20 or so of us that are standing around. She instructs them that they will be helping set up breakfast at the site and has them get on the shuttle bus.

She then turns to the rest of us and states, "Well, usually I'd assign you all tasks, but honestly, there isn't anything to do. We're not making you go home, but we just want you to know that you may be standing around all day."

 :(

A few volunteers leave, but Danielle and I decide to stick it out. It's freaking freezing out, so we spend most of our time in the heated tent. We have breakfast at 7 and around 9, Danielle and I are snagged to do donations.

So our time is split between roaming the spectator area (where I've been the past two days) and riding the buses transporting spectators to and from the site.

At noon, Danielle and I turn in our donation jars to the coordinator on duty.

We grabbed a quick snack at the food tent and are waiting for the next shuttle bus to take us to our cars when another volunteer joins us. We're chatting about what we did and she's sharing how she's been working in the house. We sigh wistfully and state how we wish we could of helped out inside.

The words are no sooner out of my mouth when one of the producers walks up and asks if we're busy. We all said no and he replies, "Good, follow me. We're shooting a scene up at the house right now and I need volunteers."

We stammer about how we don't have hardhats (a MUST if you're near the house) and he says, "Don't worry about it." :D

Then a security guard actually went to stop us as we went up the driveway and the producer says, "They're with me!"

Turns out the scene is having the Sears truck back up the driveway full of Craftsman tools and supplies and Rib gets the volunteers fired up and we help unload the truck.

Well, the scene sort of branched from that and half of the volunteers ended up in the garage with Rib, while Danielle and I and a handful of others ended up outside pretending to care for the landscape. I was on my hands and knees tending the mulch around the bushes. :D

Many takes were shot, then they actually had us unload the truck and I'm in the thick of it.

After that, we had the items in the garage and were opening them on camera.

So look for the girl with short black hair with no hardhat on. There... I made myself easier to spot. :p  :D

That is if the scene doesn't end up on the cutting room floor.

Afterwards, Rib came around to everyone, thanked us and signed the backs of our shirts! :D

Danielle and I weren't ready to leave the house just yet, so we snagged some discarded hardhats and another organizer instructed us to put together some stools and other Craftsman equipment and haul empty boxes out of the garage. So we did!

Then with another woman, we ambled into the house, looked around, went out back to see the playground equipment being built, then headed over to the tent for dinner.

It was quite an adventerous day.

Rib told all of us to come back tomorrow with our shirts on and that they'd have all the volunteers together for the unveiling of the home. So Danielle and I are gonna meet up and do that. Hopefully I'll get better pics and video. :)

Episode will air sometime in November. :)

I'm finally back from my day at the EM:HE site. It's been a long day but I can say that I met Ed and Paige and got siggies from them. Rip came out too but since I already has his siggie, he snapped a photo with me. :D

A group of us stayed till the bitter end and Ty came out to do a few autographs, but there was so much pushing and shoving, that I didn't get it. Snapped a pic of him though and was close enough to touch him. :)

I'll share photos and details later. I can say that I'll never look at the show the same way again.

That's really cool David! If you get a chance, I highly recommend going down and checking it out up close and personal. It's amazing.

Do you know their story of why they were on the show?
Dad worked as a nurse for a local hospital and was accidentally stuck with a needle and died this past January as a result of the virus he contracted (hepatitis c).

And no, you're not the only one that thinks Ty is cute. ;) :D Andy calls him my other husband. LOL!

it warms my heart that so many people are there to help out a community member in needs. I wish ALL communities were like this... the world would be a better place.

I am so impressed! What a wonderful, heartwarming experience!
The EM team was around Philadelphia last year, I think, and I've passed the house.

I have a thing for Ed. Man, when he cut his hand (memories) I panicked. Maybe it's the accent. Whatever, I think he has the sweetest personality.

Sadly, life and work got in the way of my going over to watch, but when I was working on the golf course, from about 3/4 of a mile away I heard "Move that bus!" I can't wait to find the air date for the one in Pittsburgh.

Awesome! I was wondering when it was going to air.
Looking forward to watching it. :)

I was just telling Ralph we needed to start paying attention...the one from Toledo was on this past week and I knew they were working on the house in MI just after that so figured it had to air soon!

I don't know if anyone saw the one this past weekend, ( I have it on the DVR but haven't finished it yet), anyway, the fire station they were talking about where the dad works, is the one in my neighborhood...about 1/4 mile from my house. Kinda cool!

Well, we *watched* ... did we see YOU??

Fur sure, you weren't the only one not wearing a hard hat! :(

They really make it hard to see details (and/or People) with their super fast
and choppy editing ... it's hard to scan across a frame before it's GONE!

But we KNOW you were there!
And ya built a NICE House!!

Good Work, Kimmy!!
:D

Kimmy...were you in front of the house digging in the garden? Sorry I didn't go back and reread your info on it, but I thought I remembered something about *planting* you in the garden to dig. :p

It was so touching and as usual, very emotional. The boys were so mature. So sad, so young. They certainly idolized their dad.

Thanks!

Kimmy...were you in front of the house digging in the garden?
Yes, I was. :) When they were unloading the Sears truck of tools and such.

I'm at work, so I haven't watched the episode yet. I taped it though. Then I'll be able to confirm if I got a second of air time or not. *laughs*

It was a great episode.
Lots of tears from hubby and I.
I wonder if we saw you. :)

I looked for you, but it was difficult to tell anyone apart.
I cried so hard on this episode. Some episodes get me more than others. This was a very emotional episode to me.

I also kept an eye out for you but had trouble telling people apart. Either way, I still appreciate you and all the other volunteers helping the Nickless family out!

I am usually pretty good about not getting teary-eyed while watching the show, but this time it hit a bit closer to home. I am really glad such a deserving family was granted this home! :)

Thanks everyone. I was a blubbering mess too while watching it this afternoon. I could tell Tim was a special guy from working with those that really knew him. I also knew LCC gave scholarships to the boys, but I had no idea about the plaque. That was so sweet. LCC is my alma mater.

I nearly made it on screen. When Rib goes out to the Sears truck, I was on the ground in the garden. I'm not on screen, but I'm just left of the camera's view.

When the car is presented and the family is in it, through the back window you can see a group of people. I'm in that group. :)

Again, it was a great experience.

Darn it, NOW I see that it was running Nov. 30th!

Do they ever repeat them, or is it possible to see it somewhere else, on line maybe?
