Acting legend (and Race Car Driver) Paul Newman dies at 83 ...

"WESTPORT, Conn. - Paul Newman, the Academy-Award winning superstar who personified cool as the anti-hero of such films as "Hud," "Cool Hand Luke" and "The Color of Money" — and as an activist, race car driver and popcorn impresario — has died. He was 83.
Newman died Friday after a long battle with cancer at his farmhouse near Westport, publicist Jeff Sanderson said. He was surrounded by his family and close friends...

In the 1970s, Newman, admittedly bored with acting, became fascinated with auto racing, a sport he studied when he starred in the 1972 film, "Winning." After turning professional in 1977, Newman and his driving team made strong showings in several major races, including fifth place in Daytona in 1977 and second place in the Le Mans in 1979.
"Racing is the best way I know to get away from all the rubbish of Hollywood," he told People magazine in 1979."

Rest In Peace, Paul ~ You drove a Great Race!

I met Paul & Joanne at the Nelson Ledges Road Racing Course,
in Garrettsville, Ohio, in the 70's when he was racing in the the SCCA
sports car series as a amateur / semi-pro. He raced at Nelson Ledges
many times, and was the kindest, friendliest, most helpful person I'd ever
met. He helped with publicity for the Track and the races, and NEVER
acted like the big-time *Star* that he was. In fact, he was just tickled
pink if no one ever mentioned the movies and acting while he was at
the track! He camped in a (rather fancy) Motor Home right there in the
infield with us "common folk" who ran and worked on the track as a
hobby. He was a truly GREAT PERSON; who I'm glad to have met and
got to know - even if ever so briefly.

We're gonna *MISS YA*, Paul!! :(

I read this morning a response he had to a question about his longtime marriage to his wife and why he never strayed.

"When you have steak at home, why go out for a hamburger?"

He was an amazing person and it is the world's loss that he is gone.

When my daughter told me about his death, I felt like we had lost a family member. I was also priveleged to meet him in Daytona Beach in the seventies. I worked at a big hotel over there and he was always in town for the races. What a great man.

Rest in Peace Mr. Newman You will be sadly missed by all.:(

Oh gosh, I had no idea he was sick. My mom and dad were big fans of his, and we always watched his movies.

He accomplished so many things in his life, he truly was a role model.

Phred,
How very lucky you were to have met him. He was truly one person I would have loved to meet.

A few months ago I was watching the Actors Studio, and they had Joanne Woodward on. The way she spoke about Paul, the love that shone through .... was magnificent.

{{{{{hugs}}}}} to the entire Newman family.

Found this quote from him:
"I picture my epitaph," he was quoted as saying. "Here lies Paul Newman, who died a failure because his eyes turned brown."

LOL

He and his family were very private about their lives...I hope we hear a bit about how he faced his coming death. My guess is it was with humility and humour.

I was looking at his resume and all the films he made.

SLAP SHOT!!

That was one of the classic sports movies! I really admired his sense of humor and ability to skate!

Cool Hand Luke

That movie was "Rebel With a Cause"- Driving the people in charge crazy!

Butch and Sundance

I want to go out in a blaze of glory like that!

I didn't like the 'pool' movies...:(
