You sit upon a cushion behind a pane of glass
Sometimes you dream, sometimes you bathe, or watch me as I pass
So sleek and soft and lazy, so like yet unlike me
You let them take you in the house, and I’m still roaming free.
My ears are torn and itching, my paws are sore and scarred
My belly’s often empty, my bed is rough and hard
The cars and dogs, they scare me; the summer sun is hot
A raccoon tried to kill me once, and last year I was shot!
And when the notion takes me as it all too often can
I have to find a mate, the urge is too strong to withstand
I’ll run across a busy road or fight until I win
That’s probably why I’m out here, two other cats gave in.
Last night I saw your human, I know she saw me too
She didn’t throw a rock at me or yell at me to shoo
She reached for something in her purse, I ran away to hide
But I went back and found a treat -
It’s been so long; I need to eat
Away from danger, thirst, and heat -
I’d even come inside.
