Kitten rescued from drain by firefighters with vacuum cleaner

A tiny newborn kitten has been rescued from a drain by firefighters using a vacuum cleaner with a sock pulled over the nozzle.

The feline was just six-hours old when it slipped down a pipe behind the kitchen sink at a house in Dunbar, East Lothian, and became trapped.

Two fire engines and eight firefighters from Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service were called out after the disappearance at midnight on June 8.

They used a vibrascope camera, normally employed to locate people trapped in earthquakes, to pinpoint the stricken cat's location.

A sock was then attached to the nozzle of a vacuum cleaner and the kitten was gently sucked out of the pipe to safety at about 2am.

Owner Claire Coutts, 26, said the incident came just a few hours after her cat Alvin crawled under some floorboards and gave birth to a litter of four.

She said: "I could hear this whining coming from beneath the dishwasher.

"I counted the kittens and realised that one of them had gone missing, and that it had become trapped in a pipe underneath the sink.

"We tried various ways to get it out and I could almost get my arm down the hole but the kitten had become trapped too far down and round the bend.

"The fire brigade suggested tearing out the units and ripping up the floorboards.

"I said to them there must be an easier way to get the kitten out than destroying my kitchen so we decided to get the Hoover out and see if we could suck it out the hole. We put a sock over the end of the Hoover, stuck it down the hole and out it popped."

A fire service spokesman said: "The kitten and mother were reunited. It seems to be none-the-worse."

Coming on the heals of stories about the Marine tossing a puppy from a cliff and a driver tossing a bag of kittens into traffic I am very happy to report on a Roto-Rooter employee who went above and beyond the call of duty to save a kitten.

Roto-Rooter excavation supervisor, Kevin Adkins came to the aid of a kitten trapped in an open drainage pipe. He had been flagged down by an employee of the Ziebart Auto Shop in Columbus, Ohio.

Matt Michaelis, a window tinter at Ziebart Auto Shop, had been at work and kept hearing the cries of the kitten. It had lasted a day or so before he finally located where it was coming from, an open drain pipe next to the shop. Calls were made to rescue organizations but when no one was able to help the employees took matters into their own hands and started digging. They still weren’t able to reach the cat they flagged down the Roto-Rooter van as it drove by.

Kevin Adkins was able to use the Roto-Rooter septic tank vacuum to literally suck the kitten out of the drainage pipe. The kitten has been checked over by the local vet and given a clean bill of health. The kitten already has a home, with Ziebert Auto Shop.

I hope that Roto-Rooter and Ziebert Auto Shop get tons of free publicity from this story and that people remember these companies when they need the services they provide. The Ziebert Auto Shop is too far away from where I live or I would become a customer. If I ever have drainage issues Roto-Rooter will be the company I call.

A special thanks to Matt Michaelis and Kevin Adkins for showing that not all men are cruel to animals.
