END WANTON ANIMAL CRUELTY IN THE PENNSYLVANIAN COMMONWEALTH!

In March 2008, Allegheny Sheriff’s Deputies, accompanied by American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) and Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PSPCA) humane enforcement officers, executed search warrants that revealed a nightmare of cruelty at the Tarentum, Pennsylvania, “Tiger Ranch” cattery. (See Tiger Ranch Investigative Video: http://tinyurl.com/2o3wzg .)

Suffering, disease-ridden survivors were filmed as they staggered among the stiff corpses of their companions, unable to eat or drink with their ulcerated mouths, or breath through their mucus-choked airways. (Sources: “Tiger Ranch Stuns Vet; ‘Never Saw Conditions Like This’,” WTAE TV-4 (ABC), http://tinyurl.com/52k4xh ; “Tiger Ranch Supplemental Video,” http://tinyurl.com/4qx9pg .)

Those cats and kittens beyond suffering were found jammed in freezers, bulldozed into shallow graves, or laying where they fell, dead, in their food, litter boxes, trailers, or beneath the open sky.

Hundreds of animals were imported from distant states; fine, adoptable cats who arrived in excellent health, only to deteriorate, suffer, and die in the frigid Pennsylvanian Piedmont. (Source: “Sick Cats Came To Tiger Ranch From Several States,” WPXI TV-11 (NBC), http://tinyurl.com/6z3jqx .)

The Tiger Ranch proprietor was arrested, and faces 593 charges of animal cruelty at a criminal arraignment scheduled for July 2008.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and the County of Allegheny, must take measures to ensure such grievous atrocities are never again perpetrated against blameless domestic animals or livestock within their borders.

Be It Therefore RESOLVED, that the Pennsylvanian Commonwealth and Allegheny County must affirm and reinforce existing cruelty statutes, and propose such new criminal statutes that will enable felony animal cruelty charges against any party that perpetrates grave harm against harmless domestic animals or livestock; and

Be it Further RESOLVED, that the law enforcement authorities of the Pennsylvanian Commonwealth, Allegheny County, independent authorities of the ASPCA, the PSPCA, and all relevant animal cruelty law enforcement authorities, should be granted the fullest and broadest authorities to search, investigate, and terminate grave and intolerable instances of animal cruelty, neglect, and epidemic disease; and

Be it Further RESOLVED, that legitimate, not-for-profit, “No-Kill” organizations and rescue entities be accorded the support and recognition they deserve, and be in no way tainted by association with the Catastrophe in Tarentum.

As District Judge Susan Blaschak aptly observed, “In the absence of duty, care, food, water and helping the animals get to it ... this rises to the level of torturous conduct,” (Source: “Cat Shelter Operator Ordered to Stand Trial,” Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, http://tinyurl.com/6buch4 .)

How about we pledge to help anyone that takes in animals and needs help. Lin Marie never meant to abuse animals, although it looks that way. She needed help. Every one on this board has helped me. I am a woman with 7 adult cats and 4 kittens. People on the board contributed to help me get my cats spayed and neutred. I had five pregnant cats at the same time. I believe that Lin Marie was given so many cats that she lost control. Her heart was good. Let's all try to help anyone that is overwhelmed with cats. That should be our biggest lesson of all.

That's definitely a good idea, although I believe that everyone on PT does that anyhow. That doesn't negate the fact that this case needs to be made as an example to anyone who thinks that neglect of animals isn't a crime. I was only too eager to sign this petition.

I signed.

I do agree with the fact that help is needed for rescues but I also tend to think that we are suppose to be intelligent caring people and we need to know when to ask for help and when to say I can't handle this. It is too easy to get overwhelmed and when animals suffer because of this it is just not acceptable. Abuse and cruelty is just not acceptable no matter what the initial intention.

I feel so bad when I see the cats that were not taken care of at Tiger Ranch. I feel bad that I sent about 10 cats and kittens there last year. It is hard for me to understand how this could go on and I wonder if Lin Marie even noticed what was going on. Anyone who loves cats should be able to notice that cats are suffering. Even I noticed that my cats were suffering. You have no idea how bad I felt when my cat of three years continuely had babies over and over and over. She still is so skinny because she gave her live to all of her kittens. I felt so bad that my cats were suffering from fleas. That is why I called Tiger Ranch. As much as I loved my cats, I thought they would have a better place. Financially, I was unable to help my cats. I would budget money every month to help the cats and then something would happen that I could not take care of the cats. I am so glad for everyone's help. Thanks so much!!!

[QUOTE=rebeccahowes;2019471]I wonder if Lin Marie even noticed what was going on. QUOTE]

What??? She was the director or manager or owner or whatever of Tiger Ranch, was she not? It was her job to know. Believe me, she noticed. There were dead cats in a freezer. Who put them there? How did they die? She noticed. And she did nothing. Nothing at all. Now she claims innocence.

Rebecca, I think in this one instance I can speak for others here and say that I sincerely doubt that anyone here at PT casts any blame on you for taking cats to Tiger Ranch, and that includes me, as long as you did not see the conditions of that place. However, anyone who did see the conditions there and dropped off cats anyhow, are just as culpable as Lin Marie.

I signed it and I do agree that people who get started in rescuing cats sometimes take on more than they can handle. But at a certain point you have to ask for help even if it's the authorities.
