Nearly three-quarters of the horses seized from a farm near Andrew in February have been placed in new homes, breeder Susan Fyfe said Thursday.

Fyfe convinced the Alberta Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) to allow her to care for the animals after she heard about the animal welfare group taking the 101 starving and neglected horses in February.

In March, 97 neglected and starving horses were transported to her Keno Hills Stable, near Androssan, east of Edmonton, where she promised to care for them until they were healthy enough to be put in good homes.

By Thursday, only 26 of the horses remained unadopted. Fyfe said people have come from as far away as Ontario to take them in.

However, she added, that she was ensuring that all adoptive families could care for the creatures by making all applicants fill out a detailed form.

"We've been asking for veterinary, asking what they've been feeding for food, what kind of acreages or farms they have, what their water supply is, just everything that the basic horse needs are, what kind of fencing, everything from pasture size to who looks after the feet," she said.

Fyfe said nearly 600 people have donated their time, money and supplies since the horses were seized.

Thank goodness for the good people in the world, of whom Ms. Fyfe is surely one!
